Their time's equivalent to our police shield line, direct military intervention was only form of crowd control then. Bayonets, horse, and sabre held back citizens as if they were the army of an enemy country. Thank god for modern dedicated police forces, rubber bullets, chokeholds, and tazers because riots in those days ended much more costly. Many people these days may think that rubber bullets, chokeholds, and tazers are "unnecessarily violent" but in grand scheme of things those are the minority of cases now, especially compared to back then when it was the opposite as the majority of cases ended in unnecessarily violence. I bet you'd much rather get hit by a rubber bullet, tazed, and held in a headlock by a modern professional policeman trained to arrest and most likely survive VS getting bayoneted, shot by real bullets, and chopped down and trampled under hoofs by a soldier trained to fight and kill and most likely die.

I see a lot of people calling the walk unrealistic, well, you’re kind of right. While the walk was not used in the British army, and I think it was already outdated, it was used by the Prussians in early to mid 1700s, and then made a return in the napoleonic wars where a regiment used this walk during the battle of Leipzig because of the amount of bodies.

"The shot heard around the world" was a smaller conflict compared to the other wars across the British empire. Had the colonies been the only enemy the UK would have flooded North America from Canada down and Virginia up with troops. But with European wars getting rowdy the Royal navy and British army were being held back to defend the homeland. The French did help but the debts they amounted in doing so garunteed the revolution and eventually napoleon's rise to power. P.s. the drill is terrible in this.

Though considering the shot heard around the world led to the revolution, which led to the French revolution, which led to Napoleon, which led to the revival of Prussia after his fall, which led to the Franco-Prussian War, which led to WW1, which led to WW2, which led to the Cold War, which led to 90% of the foreign issues we face today from Europe to Asia, I'd say it's still a pretty massive event.

If you are referring to what i think you are then your history lessons were taught in an American society, not that of the rest of the world. As if it were the rest of the world you would understand that to Britain america was a mere side show to the wars the British Empire were fighting on its own shores, indeed if it were not for the french ans spanish you would still have British troops in your streets. And do not forget that when america later flexed its muscle in Canada, Britain marched across america and burned your capital buildings down .
