His humility outweighed his abilities on the field. His most notable quote is "Football is what I do, not who I am". What that meant to him is that his character and value as a human being are measured by his off field actions, not his game play. A truly solid individual.

Glad you got to see how great Troy Polamalu was. And honestly, a five minute video doesn't do him or his career justice. Truly a guy you would want to go to war with.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Troy is a fellow Californian so I have known him since he was a college star at USC. The mascot of USC is a Trojan (Warrior) from the ancient City of Tory. Troy thought that he was always destined to attend this prestigious university and become a legend. I am a lifelong fan of cross-town rival UCLA, and believe me Tory proved an unstoppable force against us. But I still always liked and respected him. Troy is universally loved by all NFL fans. First of all, the guy was a humble and gracious man. Never bragged about his or his teams greatness. Understood the games strategy and tactics on par with an experienced coach and played with reckless abandon. And left the game before his skills markedly declined. Simply an incredible player who obviously loved playing this game. ❤💛❤

Yeah. think I'm going to have to revisit Troy quite soon, maybe a more complete video showing his all round game. The challenge is KZbin doesn't allow reactions to certain videos! Troy really seemed to punch well above his weight, I didn't realise he was "only" 5'10 and 94kg!

Troy is one of my favorite Steelers of all time, I absolutely love that guy and miss him so much. I'm a life long Steelers fan and we sure could use him today lol. We are 11-1 and had our first lost on last Monday to a team we should have beat on our home filed. However I understand the lost, it was 3 games in 12 days and we have not playing well anyway . But no excuses, we have a big games Sunday, I miss my boy Troy, he always went all out.

Strong Safeties generally have an uncanny grasp of where the ball is and what's happening on the field. Every once in a while, a strong safety comes along that is almost psychic in their ability to find the ball. When you have a S.S, that can visualize the play as it unfolds, while it unfold....You've got a truly dangerous dude on your hands. Imagine a guy that knows your play book after the first few minutes of a game. If he wasn't breaking up plays, he was breaking your quarterback. I really loved watching him play.

As a Yinzer and Stillas fan, it brought joy watching this. I won't rank him because I have my own bias. Guys like Troy, Greg Lloyd, Hines Ward, James Harrison as well as those from the Steel Curtain years like Lambert, Mean Joe Green and so on truly represent the blue collar attitude of yinzers from Pittsburgh. Hope you make it to Pittsburgh for a game someday. Tailgating is half the experience.

My ranking would probably be Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu, and Ed Reed as 1,2, and 3. If I were starting a franchise, I'd pick Troy. He's the type of player to build a defense around. He's quiet, but he exudes leadership by example.

I'm not a huge Steelers fan, but I do respect them and their history (And my team just knocked them out of being undefeated!). They have a long line of Hall of Fame players. Check out the "Steel Curtain" Defense. They were packed with talent. You can choose any player from that era and do a reaction to them. Most of the players on that squad are in the Hall. On offense, check out Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Franco Harris, "The Immaculate Reception" play. The Steelers were arguably the team of the 1970's.

@Zaximillian
@Zaximillian 3 жыл бұрын
The Steel Curtain was SO dominant a defense that rhey held opposing offenses down to no points and sometimes negative yards per game in some statistics. Their front four were all incredibly good. THEN you had guys like Jack Lambert and Jack Ham behind them. THEN you had defensive backs like Mel Blount. So good that guys like Mike Wagner get forgotten. The only supremely dominant defenses that have no arguments against them that I can think of were the 1985 Chicago Bears' "46" defense, and the 1991 Philadelphia Eagles. The Steel Curtain was a fixture of the NFL for multiple seasons, with mostly the same guys.

It's interesting to hear a break down from a different perspective! Troy was like a wet blanket smothering the opponent's offense by always being in close proximity to the ball regardless what area of the field. His phenomenal instinct and closing speed forced opposing offenses to throw and run away from him, limiting their options and elevating the play of his fellow defenders. Top three NFL safeties are in my opininion , in no particular order are Troy Palamalu, Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum. Honerable mention Carnell Lake. And any of those players would be a good keystone, and always at the beginning of their career so they odopt the culture in a way as to emulate it. The NFL draws viewers with flashy plays but no team has ever won a Superbowl with a flimsy defense. Here in Steeler Nation we say "offense wins games, defense wins championships" I hope to see more content soon.

Think Troy would make most top 5 safeties of all time, what's most impressive is his motor. He seemed to just suddenly appear all over the field. I would easily rank Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed ahead of him, it would be harder to make the case for anyone else. Besides the previous two mentioned, other safeties worth looking into might be Charles Woodson, John Lynch (one of the grittiest some say dirtiest), and the ever tragically short career of Sean Taylor (could have topped this list eventually).

Troy was damn good, and certainly worthy of his bust in the Hall of Fame.... But I personally put him behind Ronnie Lott and Jack Tatum, and perhaps Ed Reed. As you might guess from his name, Troy Polamalu is an ethnic Samoan. People of that heritage often excel at football, just as they do in rugby. It's funny, because they're some of the warmest, most kind-hearted people on the planet. But when they get turned loose, look out. They are the stuff of nightmares. The territory of American Samoa produces, per capita, more NFL players than any state, territory, or jurisdiction of any kind. The state of Hawaii, with a large percentage of ethnic Polynesian people, also produces a huge number of great football players, despite its remoteness and relatively small population. It must be something in the water. Who knows?
@kabirconsiders
@kabirconsiders 3 жыл бұрын
People from that region; Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, etc pack on weight like no other. They are enormous! Aside from the genetic predisposition, it has to be their diet. Probably super high in protein and carbs.
@kentgrady9226
@kentgrady9226 3 жыл бұрын
@@kabirconsiders Yes, they're often quite large. Even those who aren't insanely huge just seem to have the correct combination of strength, explosiveness, agility and temperament for rough sport. My home state of Nebraska, as well as other rural, Midwestern states, used to produce disproportionate numbers of offensive linemen. The combination of German and Scandinavian ethnic background (generally larger than most people), being raised doing physical labor on farms and ranches, and like you mentioned - a diet often high in proteins and carbs... made for lots of big, strong boys. I regularly played against opponents who towered over me (I'm 6'1") and easily weighed 120kgs... And they were 16-17 years old. This doesn't seem especially remarkable to some people these days. But 30+ years ago, it was pretty incredible. I remember thinking, "How the hell am I gonna move *this* guy?" Back to Samoans... There's a documentary on football culture in that territory. Poverty is a big problem there. They often play with old, outdated equipment. But, word gets out, and college recruiters travel half way around the world to scoop these kids up by the bus load. It's pretty interesting.

My long term goal when I have kids (touch wood) is to get them into rugby, sounds like I need to find a nice Samoan/Midwestern girl to settle down with lol.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Polamalu, Gronk, or JJ....Very difficult decision here, however I choose JJ only because I think that at his position, he has perhaps the greatest ability to determine the outcome of a game. And although I really love Gronk and recognize his exceptional ability in all facets of the game, I would choose Troy second. As I said in the Gronk video, a great receiver like Gronk is dependent on a very good quarterback that can get the ball to him and a even a decent run game in order to mix things up. If Gronk is your main weapon then defences would design a specific schemes around limiting or stopping him.

Dante Hall, the X-Factor! For a stretch that lasted maybe 12 months, he could break ANY return, and all in spectacular fashion. He is among the kick returners you held your breath for, like Devin Hester, Eric Metcalf, Dave Meggett, a little Allen Rossum, Nathan Vasher for a bit, and many others.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIqYg3x3bdqrf7s is the longer one done by the NFL, and puts his runbacks into context. On most teams, runbacks of any kick for a touchdown happen rarely per season, and sometimes not at all. With Dante Hall over this stretch, he was a threat to do this every GAME.

@@blakefrancisboggs7526 I think its a good reason why we do, the east coast is just so much closer to us and more realistic to fly to. I would be open to choosing a midwestern team though, it would just mean I probably wouldnt get to many games lol

The New York Football Giants are a decent pick. This is a franchise that has boom and bust cycles. They rise out of seemingly nowhere to be good or great for a couple of years, then cycle through just awful, then rise again. Right now their future feels like an uncomfortable question mark. Like in Batman where the awkward Riddler shows up. I'm no fan of the G-Men, but, speaking objectively, they seem to have an identity of unspectacular players playing a tough, ball control strategy. Superstar players do not seem to have ever meshed well on the Giants. They play a team game, usually with a marquee running back and a complete defense.

Please stop comparing Troy and Ed. They played 2 different positions. Ed is the best ball hawking free safety of all time. Troy is the best SS. Ronnie played 3 different positions so its hard to make him the best at a single position. He was a monster though.
