Hey, this video was just sent to me. Really enjoyed it! I've always wondered what my videos are like from the perspective of someone who didn't grow up with baseball. I really enjoyed your passion for what's happening. This was just my 2nd video in the Baseball Bits format, and I have since made about ~30 more and really upped the production quality. I see that you've watched some of the newer ones since. Thanks for the support! Hopefully they have piqued your curiosity.

Just some context to explain why he was so mad: Giving up only 2 runs in 8 innings pitched is considered to be a great pitching performance. However, Verlanders team only scored 1 run. In baseball a pitcher’s individual wins are considered an important statistic and measure of a pitcher’s skill. In order for a pitcher to get a “win” they must pitch at least 5 full innings, leave the game with their team winning, and they’re team must keep the lead and win the game. Verlander is pissed because even though he has had an amazing performance individually, his team was hitting poorly and there was no way he could get a win. (He knew it was his last inning, because 105 pitches is a lot in baseball and even the best pitchers rarely ever pitch more than 110 pitches nowadays).
@GAC_554 жыл бұрын
Pitcher wins are the least important stat in baseball. No one is measuring a pitchers skill based on how many wins a season they had. Jacob deGrom won 11 games last year compared to Eduardo Rodriguez’s 19. Is Rodriguez a better pitcher? No.
@toshow2374 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah I completely agree that a pitcher’s wins are not a direct measure of skill in any way at all. Its just something that people look at to see how a pitcher is helping their team succeed, and something that matters to a pitcher. I was just explaining the terminology of “getting the win” for someone who may not understand.
@GAC_554 жыл бұрын
Toshow 10 Ahh yeah I was basing it off your third sentence in the original comment. Yeah I would agree it’s an important stat to most pitchers.

Verlander was also famous for not getting run support. There were a lot of games like this where he'd make a mistake or two, give up like one home run and a double in 7 innings, and the Tigers would fail to score.

Justin in his 20's and early 30's was one of the hardest throwers ever, and incredibly durable. I think he missed one game from 2006 to August 2014, which is lunacy in this day and age. Especially for probably the second most consistently hard-throwing pitcher of all-time after Nolan Ryan. After an injury plagued season and a half in 2014 and the first half of 2015, he's gone right back to never missing a start, though he tops out more like 97-98 (156-158 km/hr) miles per hour nowadays, rather than 101-102, which he hit regularly from 2006-2012. We weren't measuring spin rate back then, but everyone knew the ride (resistance to gravity due to backspin) on Verlander's fastball, as well as his ability to topspin the curveball, was incredible. Still is, at 37 years old. Was just named the best pitcher in the American League in 2019.

Longtime Detroit baseball fan - I watched this one happen live and never forgot it. Lemme C&P what I wrote on the original video when it was made: Oh, I definitely remember this inning. It was always memorable when JV started throwing 102. He did it during his no-hitter against the Brewers, too - in the ninth inning. One thing you probably missed (and understandably so) is that it wasn't just the loss/no-decision factoring into JV's anger going into this inning. The Indians had his number like no other team for the longest time in his career. This appearance was his first against the Indians after winning both the Cy Young and MVP awards in 2011, which was a major step up for him in terms of personal performance. To be facing down losing to the Indians AGAIN after achieving the arguable pinnacle of a starting pitcher's career...yeah, I'd be pretty pissed off too.

I see people mention checking other pitchers No Hitters (games where no one got an official hit off the pitcher). This video also mentioned Nolan Ryan. The reason he as mentioned is he has the most career strikeouts, 5,417. He has 7 No Hitters in his career. He also had 12 one (1) hit games and 24 games where he carried a no hitter into the 7th inning. The next best No Hit record is 4 by Sandy Koufax. Justin Verlander has 3 - not bad though and currently only has 3,012 strikeouts. The next best career strikeouts is Randy Johnson with 4,875, 2 No Hitters, and carried 11 games with no hits into the 7th innings. Nolan Ryan is considered the greatest strikeout, and fastball, pitcher of all time, and his record shows it. Unoffically Nolan Ryan is clocked at about 108 mph due to the differences in when the radar guns take the measurements now compared to when they did when he was pitching. Other analyst say it could have been up to 110 on some of his pitches. They did not measure spin rates back then.
@jackhalley55434 жыл бұрын
The team that Verlander played for (2012 Tigers) had an insane pitching staff... imo one of the best of all-time. Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister, rookie Drew Smyly, with a BP of Joaquin Benoit, Octavio Dotel and Jose Valverde? Disgusting. The crazy part is that besides Verlander (of course) no one really had eye-popping numbers, they were all just really solid and consistent

I remember this game. Fans were pretty pissed off about it as well. Verlander was so good that you would tend to automatically assume any game he pitched in a series would be a win. Not in a 'taken for granted' sort of way, but in an 'I can't miss this game' manner. If the team was in a slump you knew it would only last until Verlander's next start. With the batting line up we had, there was simply no excuse for loosing these games.

Pitchers in baseball are akin to having powerful cards in Magic the Gathering. You have a handful pitchers that you plan for each game of the week and rotate through them, picking the ones who can best dominate the other team. My San Francisco Giants won the World Series against them that year, but I never knew how formidable Verlander was until now.

Verlanders spin rate went up much higher when he joined the Astros, leading several people to think that the Astros, as a team, encourage the use of illegal foreign substances on the ball to improve grip and increase spin rate. Verlander's kind of known for being backwards in how he operates. Most pitchers lose velocity as the game goes on. They might throw 96 mph in the first inning, but be throwing 91-92 in the seventh inning. Verlander for almost his whole career would start the game by throwing 95 mph, and then get to the seventh and eighth inning and be throwing 99-100 mph.

Nobody is really known for their "spin rates" cause that number is more of an analytical tool than a traditional statistic. Unless you're a stat guru, nobody would ever say, "Hey man, did you watch Verlander pitching yesterday? His RPM was at 2700+ in the 8th inning!" If you know baseball, you can tell Verlander and other great pitchers are great just by watching them but nobody would use spin rate as their reasoning for it. Instead, we would say something like Verlander is most well-known for the speed on his fastball, his ability to maintain that speed late in games (as you saw), and his nasty curveball (you also saw that here too). You can tell when a certain pitcher's pitches are really good, spin rate is just good way of being able to measure that.
