In regards to 9:40 and the next clip, the first one was the impetus to possibly the most infamous trade in hockey's history. Star Patrick Roy (to that point in his career a 2 time Cup winner, Rookie of the Year, Playoff MVP, multiple goalie of the year awards, and the de facto best in the league) had a rare off night (along with a host of fluky and unavoidable goals like pucks rebounding of teammates, bouncing pucks, blown breakaways and screens) an allowed 9 goals. He and new head coach Tremblay were teammates and room mates just a few years prior and had a very tense relationship with Tremblay making fun of the young goalie's English, bullying him, and firing pucks at his neck and head during practice. When the Montreal crowd sarcastically cheered him he returned the mock celebration on an easy shot from center ice. After finally being pulled (he felt he was left in in order to humiliate him, with Tremblay passing on several obvious opportunities including a period break to get his goalie out of there), he walked past Trembley without either breaking eye contact, stood at his seat, then returned to walk past the coach to speak to the President of the team sitting in the crowd behind them. "That was my last game in Montreal". He then sat down calmly and cheered his team on. New GM Rejean Roule disastrously decided to trade him rather than mend the relationship about a week later. At the time, some outlets even said the Canadiens might have won the trade as they got a star goalie who projecting to be Roy 2.0 but only a couple years into his career unlike Roy at 11 and a couple younger players projected to be stars (one only played a year or 2 there IIRC but was great, another was a solid 3rd line forward for several years, the goalie was again serviceable, the other couple were busts and pale to what Colorado did). But the Avalanche got Roy and Mike Keane, who were instrumental in winning that years Stanley Cup. Roy would stay retiring after spending 11 years in Montreal and another 8 in Colorado winning an unprecedented 3rd MVP award, his 4th Stanley Cup, another lowest goals against in the league award, and 5 further 1st Team All Star selections. Colorado would be a top 3 team for the 8 years he was there and probably 3 or 4 more years. Montreal in compression went from the several most dominate dynasties in hockey history over the past 40 years (with nothing but constant contention in between), to Roy and a decade for top play, to a basement team by the early 2000's, and being one of the worst teams in the league apart from Price/their record leading to about 15 years of fringe mediocrity. They pulled the exact same stunt on another talented argued top goalie Carey Price (he doesn't have the awards Roy does because he might have had one team behind him his whole career there, and they've always been in the contention for the playoffs as long as he's entered the league) a few years ago. It was a big story for a couple weeks were everyone basically embarrassed and shamed Canadiens fans and it went away.

As a goalie you have to protect your crease. You’ll have opposing forwards try to back you into the net, interfering with your ability to play the angles and screen you. Your defenseman will try to clear him out of the way... but occasionally a little slash to the back of the leg reminds them to get out of my crease. Also is I have the puck in my catcher, players will smack at it until the whistle blows trying to get me to drop it. I would often tuck it into my armpit and raise my stick. Goalies don’t serve their penalty time.. but don’t want to give up a pk goal

At 9:56 what's happening is called the Bronx cheer. Which is basically when the fans of a team mock their goalie by cheering when they make an easy save if they feel like the goalie hasn't been good enough that entire game. The two clips in a row here actually (the one you're watching in that timestamp and the one before) are from the goalies of the same team (Montreal Canadiens). Montreal is known as having...let's just say a lot of passion for hockey. Which means that the city can be pretty hard in their goalies. So the two goalies you see in that clip are Patrick Roy and then Carey Price who are both soem of the best goalies in the franchise. Roy was driven out of Montreal after he had enough of the mocking and there was a period of time there where it seemed like the same might happen to Carey! Sorry for the long comment, I just thought it's interesting :) ALSO, I thought I'd see more of Carey Price in this video ngl. Guy gets pretttty heated when someone's in his crease (don't blame him, he got knocked out of one of the most promising playoffs of his career after being ran into. If you're interested, just KZbin search "carey price kreider")

The goalie who put his hands up in the air was Patrick Roy. Generally when one team scores more than 4 or 5 goals and the game isn't close the goalie who let in all those goals will be replaced by the backup goaltender. Patrick Roy(arguably the greatest goaltender of all time, and at this point in time had already won his team 2 stanley cups) had already let in 7 goals but his coach refused to substitute him. This infuriated him, so when he made this save and the crowd sarcastically cheered for him he was pissed. After this clip where he has his hands up in the air, he skated over to the bench and told the coach and owner of the team that he would never play another game for them, and a few days later he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, and won them a Stanley cup that very year.

Goalies are psychos, but they are our psychos. It takes a special kind of nutcase to take a frozen disk of a rubber to the face every night and enjoy it. Goalies are also the most protected players on the team, it's an unwritten that you don't hit, touch or even BREATHE on a goalie lest you want to incur the wrath of their teammates. Goalies do fight on occasion tho, and when they do the entire arena explodes. Also, your question about the penalty involving a ref, if a player PURPOSELY hits one or keeps barking at them for a bad call they can get ejected from the game. If a ref gets clipped while trying to intervene and players are still throwing there's a bit more understanding if they get hit. Some teams that have no love for eachother: Canadiens and Maple Leafs, Canadiens and Bruins, Bruins and Lightning, Bruins and Maple Leafs, Everyone and the Bruins, Maple Leafs and Senators, Flyers and Penguins, Penguins and Capitals, Rangers and Devils, Rangers and Islanders, Canucks and Flames, Flames and Oilers, Ducks and Kings, Kings and Golden Knights, Golden Knights and Sharks, Sharks and Ducks, Sharks and Kings... Basically, every team hates each other a little, and some a lot more. I couldn't even list them all. The biggest ones, I think, are Bruins and Canadiens, Flyers and Penguins, lastly the Oilers and Flames, with a new one being the Sharks and the Golden Knights.

8:07 the player talking is Sean Avery, the one in the blue jersey on the bench... he was talking about Marty Brodeur, the New Jersey Devils goaltender (at the time) and well you asked about rivalries, the rivalry between the New York Rangers and the Devils is a good example and I'll explain why: In 2008, during game 3 of the Stanley Cup playoffs between the Rangers and the Devils, the Rangers had a 5-on-3 power play (a power play occurs when a player is penalized and is sent to the penalty box for _X_ minutes and the other team has an _X_ man advantage)... anyway, Avery (for whatever reason) decided to screen (obstructing the goalie's view of the puck) Marty Brodeur in a very unusual way: instead of helping his team out by watching the puck, Sean Avery went in front of Brodeur and instead of facing *_AWAY_* from Brodeur (as any other player would do when screening the goalie), Avery faced *_TOWARDS_* Brodeur and waved his hands and his stick around. Shortly after, Avery scored to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead (call it karma but the Devils won that game in OT)... the following day, the NHL modified the "unsportsmanlike conduct" rule which has become known as "the Avery rule". Despite losing game 3 in OT, the Rangers eventually won the best of 7 series four games to one and advanced to the second round. After each series, players will line up to shake each other hands. Brodeur shook the hand of every Rangers player *EXCEPT SEAN AVERY,* to which Avery said in a post-game interview: *"Everyone talks about how un-classy I am but fatso forgot to shake my hand"* To make matters worse, during a game the following year, Avery slid into Brodeur, and as you can see in the clip, Brodeur shoves Avery back, causing a scrum. I'm not a fan of either of these two teams but if this had happened to my team (Montreal Canadiens), I'd be pretty angry. Sorry for the long read, I hope you understand 🙏
@QuackAttack3 жыл бұрын
9:48 ahhh my team now, eh? Patrick Roy (he's a hall of famer and truly one of the greatest goaltenders of all time INCLUDING Brodeur) was in net for the Canadiens against the Detroit Red Wings (I live near Detroit but my dad is a Canadiens fan) and the Red Wings were winning 7-1... Roy was a star goalie and was obviously having a bad night but instead of pulling him out, the coach (Mario Tremblay, IMO one of the worst coaches in our team's history) refused and kept Roy in the net (Roy and Tremblay didn't get along so Roy thought Tremblay kept him in the net to humiliate him for playing badly). The crowd mocked Roy with fake cheers when he made an _easy save_ to which Roy _sarcastically_ raised his arms up in "celebration". Roy let in two more goals and was finally taken off the ice. The president of the team was watching the game from the stands, and Roy walked up to him and said "This is my last game in Montreal." The Red Wings won 11-1 in what is still the biggest home defeat for the Canadiens. A few days later, Roy was traded to the Colorado Avalanche (a *NEW* team which had just moved from Quebec City, in which the defunct Quebec Nordiques were one of Montreal's rivals) and helped win the Stanley Cup for the Avalanche that same year (he's also seen with the Avs at 14:18). There was a dirty hit by an Avalanche player on a Red Wings player and well, that started an intense rivalry between the two teams. 9:58 Our _current_ goalie, Carey Price was getting the same treatment from the crowd as Roy and did the same exact thing. Thankfully, Price hasn't been traded and is still with the team, cuz he's playing really well this year. 15:16 There is a goal judge behind each net and his job is to turn off the red light to indicate a goal. After the non-goal was called as a goal, the goalie was washing the glass in front of the goal judge, I suppose it's like wiping someone's glasses. 16:46 I've heard players hurl profanities at refs and get penalized so I believe if one were to do that INTENTIONALLY, they would be penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. Again, sorry for the long read but I thought I'd try and break down what happened as best as I could

Goalies are fair game when they’re behind the net with the puck. Just so happens one of the best players in the world, Sidney Crosby, was trying to get that puck and score. Shouldn’t trip the goalie (I think it was a little bit of an accident) but yeah it will piss off the team if you hurt their goalie. What you saw with goalies hitting players in front of them is rough. Those gloves are hard: one is the glove and the other is the blocker which is very hard and hitting the guys with the goalie sticks is not good but players do try to harass the goalie for sure so it happens. Some rivalries are Bruins and everybody, Penguins vs. Flyers, Avalanche vs. Detroit. Big fights with the Avs/Detroit. Sorry this is so late. Hockey is definitely the most fun. The playoffs have just begun. That's when the sh*t hits the fan so to speak. Rivalries get extra heated, because every game is do or die.

Capitals and Penguins have alot of hate, alot of playoff matches between the caps and pens. Capitals and Rangers maybe? Caps and Bruins more recently. Also find it funny alot of the pissed off goalies are either hall of famers or future hall of famers. Red Wings and Avs is pretty ugly. Calgary and Edmonton too

Hockey is fun 😀. Only got to play in unorganized pick up leagues . Our town did not have any organized teams but got to play again a few college & high school Hockey players... You got to have some hustle in you to love the sport . Goalies have to be the best skaters on the ice . Keep up the great vids my man .. More American FB please 🙏

If you ever do make a game I would suggest the Bruins. Their fans a pretty hardcore. I live about an equal driving distance to either the Rangers or the Burins. The Canadians are the closest to me, and the only team I could see a home game and not need to make an overnight trip. Not sure where you live in the UK but there are a few teams you could watch live there to hold you over until you can make a game here.

One small detail I'd like to point out, the official term for goalies is actually goalTENDERS, not goalKEEPERS like in soccer/football.

About hitting or touching a referee you just dont, there was a kid in my league or lost control of his emotions and punched a ref and was kicked out of the League entirely not just suspended

Hockey players typically dont have "bad blood" between them. They have a job to do and they understand that you have to do your job 110% to its fullest or youll end up in the minor league. Once you make the show(NHL), you have to give it 110% to keep you job and guys can respect that. If there has been any bad blood, its usually because of something that was way over the line that was said about someone, or maybe said about their wife, family or background. Maybe someone did something dirty in the past to you or a teammate like a spear, headshot or hitting from behind. A good example of this is Claude Lemieux hit on Chris Draper back in the day. It created bad blood and animosity that lasted for years. People dont forget dirty and dangerous plays like when Todd Bertuzzi ruined that one kids career. Now there are geographical/divisional rivalvries that are very old. More from a fans perspective. Some of the biggest rivalries would be: Montreal v Boston Montreal v Toronto Toronto v Ottawa New York Rangers v New Jersey New York Rangers v New York Islanders Pittsburgh v. Philly Philly v. New Jersey Calgary v. Edmonton Colorado v. Detroit The top 3 or 4 are very old rivalries in the NHL. Well over 75 years. Mostly the North East...but some of the younger teams down south and outwest are carving out newer rivalries only people from those areas would understand.

If you hit an referee you get an “Abuse of Official” penalty. Up to the refs how many minutes.

If it’s intentional it’s a game suspension and a 10 minute penalty, I forgot who exactly did it, but a Florida player hit a ref looked fairly accidental but, still got suspended for 20 games appealed down to 14

If you only knew just how much one of those sticks cost. 😫 I have two sons that play in a AAA hockey league. When you have to buy them new sticks, even as kids, because they broke one...well, that’s one of the reasons why hockey is one of the most expensive sports to put your child in. Lol! Sorry, my spine cringes every time I see a stick being broken, especially out of rage. 😂

12:57 It was not interference. That is called defending your goalie. A regular player is not suppised to go after a goalie. Only a goalie can go after another goalie. An unwritten rule.

getting slashed by the goalie is the cost of standing in front of the crease. Want prime real estate? Gotta pay yer taxes eh

Nothing getting hit in the head with the goalies blocker those hurt. Goalie sticks in the back of legs hurt like hell no padding on the back of your legs.
