Football equipment is vastly less protective than hockey equipment. Both sports use shoulder pads and helmets, which may or may not be more effective in football (don't know, don't care), but hockey players also wear elbow pads, padded gloves, padded pants (some football players wear some additional padding here), and shin pads covering from above the knee to the ankles. They need it more, because of the nature of the sport (skates and sticks, high speeds), but those guys are armored head to toe.

Hockey is primarily a white sport mainly because of the expensive nature of the game. If a kid is to start hockey at an early age, the parents would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars on his equipment, ice time etc. And the reality is that most minority families are either not willing to, or can't afford to put their kids in such programs.
@mikes3827 Жыл бұрын
@@legendofnoob There's some truth in that, yes, but also that hockey was (and still is) HUGELY popular in predominantly white countries, such as Canada, Russia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, etc., and even in the northern US. Most of the parents are rude and cheap, probably not in a good mood having shed hundreds for their kid to play one tournament. But the reason they do it is because either they were fans themselves, as you said, the audience of hockey has also been predominantly white.

In hockey, they call it a suicide pass when you get a pass from straight behind yourself, forcing you to look straight back while moving forward and usually you turn your body to get the puck. Then you’re in the absolute most vulnerable position possible to get hit and these are usually the most painful hits. Surprisingly, the hits on the boards don’t usually hurt, but every now and then, you’ll get crunched by a 250+ pounder on the boards and your rib cage will be like an accordion and you’ll get all of your wind knocked out of you. Those are pretty painful. But the worst possible hit is getting hit head first into the boards from behind. There’s a high possibility of breaking your neck.
@juicesghost85012 жыл бұрын
Couple points for you guys as new to hockey- Penalties wont get called until the team that is to be penalized touches the puck again, ref will hold his hand up to signify the penalty is coming, giving the other team a chance until the offenders touch it, thats why you arent seeing the penalties called right away. 2nd- While brutally savage hits happen in hockey, checking against the boards injuries can be lessened from the incoming hit by getting/jumping up off the ice a little bit and letting your body go into the boards/glass to absorb the power/energy, The boards and glass will give flex/bow to absorb some of the hit. thats why you see them leave their feet when they the see the hit coming along the boards. But alot of these were the worst hits in hockey so alot didnt see them coming. You should watch a "Hockey best fights" video, you will be amazed the savagery its awesome.

Hockey is my absolute favorite sport to watch live. Watching 200 lb guys skating over 30 mph shooting pucks about 100 mph is a spectacle. Plus, the 200 lb players can hit each other & even throw down their gloves & punch each other in the face if they feel one of them crossed a line. On top of the hard hits & fights, the best part is seeing the agile offensive plays where players come in with speed & basically dance through the defense to score or when two or more players make pin point passes to each other on the move to score. Goalies are also amazing in how the athleticism they show keeping the puck out of the 4 ft by 6 ft net. It's a great sport, the only one I can season tickets to & keep my interest the same from beginning of the season to the end of postseason. Not ripping any other sports, hockey is just the one I love to watch, especially live. Anyone who has never watched a hockey game should give it a try. Before the game, familiarize yourself with icing & offsides. Those are the two most common reasons for stoppage in play. if you understand what's going on with those two calls, you can pick up everything else as it happens.

Some basic guidelines regarding legal hitting: -No elbows (elbows must be tucked in, you can only hit a guy with your shoulder or hips) -No hits to the head -No hits from behind -Both skates must be on the ice -You can only hit the guy that has the puck or just touched it -No clipping (ducking down low to knock an opponent’s legs from underneath him, used to be allowed before 2002 but is now a penalty) -No cross-checking (using the shaft of your stick to bash your opponent)

Did my guy on the right say NHL players were slower than NFL players? Might want to rethink that. The difference is the hits are made shoulders to shoulder, in NHL ( legal ones). Hit to the head happen but are illegal and yes some guys had their career ended because of brain concussions (CTE stuff)

It’s not just shoulder to shoulder , there’s hip checks and just head on hits

4:17 it may not look like it, but in hockey they are often going over 15, sometimes 20 MPH. Most checks are angled, so the closing speed is closer to 30 MPH, and the rule is you have to contact shoulder to shoulder, shoulder to body, or hip to hip (hip checking). If you launch upwards, raise your shoulder, stick out your elbow, or "submarine" someone by hip checking them below the hip, that's a penalty, and very often a match penalty (ejection) for intent to injure, and can get you suspended. It's because the game is so fast that the safety is emphasized, as one bad head hit can cause serious concussion issues, and CTE is a huge concern. In fact, if any check or hit to the head occurs now, that player *must* go to "the quiet room" where a concussions specialist is on stand by at every game, and if they determine that there is a concussion, that player is not allowed to return to the game, or play in any match, until cleared by medical professionals.

Listen, listen, even if you don't watch all the time, tune into the playoffs. Playoff hockey is absolutely electric !!! A team may only score 2 goals a game in a best of seven series, so every single play, every shift, matters. A bucket list moment is going to a playoff game live, but Maple Leaf tickets are a knife to the bank account

One thing a lot of people miss, where some of these hits result in injury, most of these guys get up right away as if nothing happened. Hockey players (Canadians) are a different breed.I know a lot of Canadians, and where they as a whole are very friendly, they are not afraid to chuck knuckles when required.

If you guys want to see some big hits, search up “Scott Stevens hits”. He was one of the biggest hitters in the 90s early 2000s. A lot of his hits by todays standards would have been penalty’s but back in those days they were clean hits. Theres one incident where he hits Paul Kayria who is like half his size and absolutely demolishes him. This hit really started a chain of concussion issues with Kariya which eventually led to him retiring because of post-concussion syndrome.

Guys, MANY hockey players end up with CTE. Hockey is a brutal, tough game, and when world-class skaters are flying down the ice at 20-25 MPH, then an opposing player lays a shoulder hit into that unsuspecting opposing player, there is almost guaranteed to be an instant concussion. Then there's all the legal fighting, and some guys get their bell rung one too many times, and CTE comes with that too. I'd say football gets the most CTE injuries, but hockey is right up there.
@mikefoley57922 жыл бұрын
I don't know if anybody else has mentioned this, but in hockey, you can't take more then three steps toward a guy to check him, which is a hit. They would kill each other if they just skated at them from far away. That is called targeting and it is a penalty. That is also why there are some really good hits and some illegal ones. It's hard to nail someone from not far away. You can push into the guy with a couple of steps and make it a hard one, or glide into him, but that is it. And yes, they wear shoulder pads.

The NHL does have stricter concussion protocols nowadays, and CTE is a big problem in hockey especially with “enforcer" guys who always have to fight. The problem is worse in minor leagues since fighting is one of the attractions that people pay to see.

If you guys liked this, consider watching “The Code.” This is a video on why there is fighting (more like was now) in hockey and what it’s purpose was. I think you’ll find it interesting. Also, the NHL has been in America since 1924 (a hundred years). Believe it or not, there is a rich history and tradition of hockey in America. My team isn’t an American team, though. I cheer for the Edmonton Oilers. A team that has won five Stanley Cups.

The NHL, what you just watched, is the level of competition that players start relaxing and is less violent than the road to get to the NHL. The average hockey player never makes it, because of an injury. The average player that never makes it to college, will still have a life long injury. I never had a career stopper and still have life long injuries from playing.

I am a retired University Professor, and I had a student who wrote his Master's thesis on the effects of concussions in hockey. It is definitely an issue for hockey players.

I play defense. She saw me level a guy and she’s been a fan ever since. So if you like fast pace contact sports, take it from her on which sports to watch.

As a Canadian who grew up on skates I wanna correct you on something right quick. On skates at that level you are travelling around 20-30 MPH, so if you see someone striding at you they're most likely moving at that speed. Now think about the other player moving toward you around the same speed and colliding. Basically a mini car crash experience and even with top level equipment you're gonna feel it. NOTE: I had to quit hockey at 17 because I already had 10 concussions.

One major difference between hockey and football, in football, you know they are looking to hit you whenever you come near. Hockey has a much bigger preparedness effect. Most big hits in hockey come as a total surprise to the recipient. You are also landing on ice
