Also why the stereotype of British food being bad exists. Britain was under extreme rationing while the GIs were here, and so when the brits invited them for tea they’d have to come up with loads of crazy food combos just so there was enough food for everyone. These dishes probably weren’t all that great but they still invited the American troops to tea and then got judged hard for it. 😅
@doomedwit10103 жыл бұрын
I thought it came from Hollywood. You cannot be on American TV or movies without perfect teeth. Not healthy. Perfect. British TV seems far less picky. I have seen many Brotish TV shows with noticeably less perfect teeth. So my understanding of the stereotype was that Americans were more obsessed with orthodontia, braces and retainers. Orthodontia being different from dentistry in MN though. So orthodontia is for the well off middle class. So I would believe it is more common in Britain. But not on British TV?

Only malocclusion causes excessive wear leading to predictable, preventable chipping and cracking of teeth, constant ulcers from sharp edges of teeth, narrowing of the upper palate leading to chronic sinus issues, swallowing problems, both of those issue leading to breathing problems, TMJ pain etc that they dismiss as 'just being cosmetic' I could go on but you have to REALLY fight to get free NHS care now even if you are homeless, unemployed, disabled or all of those things. NHS dentists are also not always available. The crazy teeth stereotype apparently came about from when the Beatles first appeared on US television. On average, Brits actually have better teeth than Americans, but before the Beatles, the only people who appeared on US TV were made to go to the dentist first, so they all had insanely pristine, perfect white teeth. The Beatles were the first to appear with "natural" teeth that didn't have extensive, expensive dental work done, so even though their teeth were normal and healthy, they looked terrible compared to everyone else, so a stereotype arose in the States that all Brits had bad teeth
@BobHUK4 жыл бұрын
Not quite true. When I was a history student at university I remember reading of an American soldier to came to England during the First World War in 1917. He wrote home to his mother that he didn't like England much, and that the 'hurrs all have bad teeth'. He meant the prostitutes or whores, but his spelling wasn't the best, and he spellt the word as he heard it 'hurrs'

@cassieoz1702 Жыл бұрын
It's a distinction between pretty teeth and 'lack of decay' so just saying 'better teeth' doesn't mean anything. Americans who are affluent enough, spend money on cosmetic dental work. NHS dental care for under-18s is based on hygiene and actual care and NOT on braces just to make your teeth look nice. If your bite/occlusion works (is functional) then whether all your teeth are straight is irrelevant.

i know why we are all naturals at queuing. it’s because at schools (secondary or otherwise) we are always taught to walk down corridors on the left side so people going the opposite way can also walk down the corridor, same thing with stairs it’s just logical. also with queuing it’s the easiest way to not talk to others cause you’re all facing the same direction.

I knew kids who took the first GCSEs and felt really sorry for them as they were rushed through by the Tories who expected to lose the General Election. There wasn't a proper syllabus prepared for the teachers and they were dumbed down so the results would look good (Friends in that year showed me the stuff they were doing in their 5th year and it was things I'd covered in my 3rd). They all really struggled with A' levels because they were dumbed down so much that A' levels were a massive step up for them and they'd never covered stuff that they were expected to know already. Similarly a lot of those students also found doing a degree a massive step up. I remember helping one or two and being shocked at the gaps in their knowledge. Talking to friends who are teachers I believe the standard of GCSEs has improved a fair bit from those early days.

Perhaps Americans like to call it British, because it’s British English? I mean, I’m American (and I know there are so many different accents within the UK), but I’ve never heard of Scottish English or Irish English when talking about the language? If we want an option of British vs. American English for typing or search results from Google there’s no option for Irish or Scottish... so I guess we’ve attached the adjective British to account for all the non-American and non-Australian/South African/New Zealander English that is spoken... In my day (that is, elementary and middle school age) we learned about the UK as GB. But I don’t think they taught the distinction of what GB refers to very well. Anyway, just a bit of insight from across the pond on why we would say a ‘British’ accent. I personally would love to learn to speak in various accents! Not just the posh English :)
@simonehawkins55204 жыл бұрын
J. Dunbar also, keep in mind Evan is an American ex-pat, so he is speaking from an American point of view of what we think of when hearing people from the UK. To us, it’s a British accent, to distinguish from American English. (Note my previous comment on British vs. American English.) I guess that’s what our media - film, telly, etc. - has done to us. 🤷🏻♀️ Though I grew up watching Monty Python & Keeping Up Appearances, as well as older British films so....I’m a bit biased, and definitely come from a different standpoint haha. Even my Mum infused our vocabulary with British-isms because she worked there for some time when she was younger. I didn’t learn that this wasn’t American English until I was in my teens though! 😂

I think the stereotype about the weather is true but it makes sense because the weather can actually change quite a lot. I'm in Scotland and there has been rain, bright sunshine and snow all in one day, sometimes within a couple hours of each other

0:44 Many products made and sold in the UK have that Royal Warrant on, it just means it’s approved and recognised by HRH the Queen and Duke of Edingbourough. A company would have had to sold products for at least five years, and have an ongoing trading arrangement. I’ve seen this on loads of products ranging from food & drink to Samsung tech, Christmas crackers, Cartier bracelets and clothing. I’m not sure if i’m just an observant child, or if people do realise what there consuming.

The by "appointment of the Queen" stamp (called a Royal Warrant) means she buys a product from that company in that category (so, juice for example) and has done for years, I used to sell Hayter Lawnmowers (very expensive but long lived lawnmowers, we'd get some of those things come in for service that were like 50 years old) and they had their Royal Warrant stamp as well, Marmite also has it, so the Queen loves it. The Prince of Wales also can issue Royal Warrants.

The royal seal is provided to any company that provides goods/services directly (by appointment... so anything routinely ordered in or repeat custom work) to the royal estate. It could be things sent to buckingham palace, Windsor Castle, Sandringham, etc etc. The queen can take the seal away and they would not be allowed to do direct business as standard with the royal estate any more. a compay that provides a one-off product or service would not be able to receive the seal. So I would safely assume that Squash would be regularly consumed by the royals and their staff. Tey will, generally, only go for the one brand of anything. that is who get's the seal.

I would say many monarchies have some variation of official royal approvement of companies. Here in Sweden such companies are known as "court suppliers", and are often well established in their respective markets. Not all mention it on the packaging but it's often clearly stated on the webiste. They supply the royal family with anything from knives to photography services. Funnily enough IKEA is on the list, who aren't exactly known for the highest quality products, so I'm sure there is an "ambassdors of culture" aspect to it as well.

one thing that i find is a stereotype and that is also related to the accents thing is that people who are not English think that all of England is basically London and then loads of countryside. I think it is again the media not really showing the other areas of England that much like Newcastle or Liverpool or Birmingham or The West Country or The Midlands and stuff. all that ever gets shown is London and countryside and that's it like nope there is more to England than that.

the teeth stereotype and "bland food" one comes from war. In world war 1 and 2, Americans eventually came to England to be stationed there ready for deployment, the brits being under strict rationing decided to pull out most of their teeth to make sure rations went on food not dentistry stuff such a toothpaste or mouthwash, making it one less issue to worry about and because we were on rations, we couldn't exactly splash out on the salt, pepper, spices, etc... so basically the reason for that stereotype is basically American ignorance, saw a rationing nation and thought "wow what bad teeth and omg this food isn't seasoned? absurd"
