Germany in HRE: Highesst rank Römischer Kaiser ( in some cases only Römischer König. Second: Kurfürst/ Elector. Third: Herzog/Duke. Forth: Graf, Fürst/ Count, Prince. There was a complicated system, the rank/title Fürst was before about 1500 only a synonyme for ,ruler'. In some cases Graf was higher than Fürst, in some cases the other way, and in the Graf rank there had been Markgraf, Pfalzgraf, Landgraf, Burggraf with some rank differences. The HRE was divided into more than 300 independent states, so in contrast to England/ Great Brittain a nobleman was the ruler of a mostly small state. The lowest rank of nobility had been Herren/ Sir. There had been a number of Reichsritter/ Imperial knights/ Freiherren which ruled mostly only a single village. Often the Freiherr is translated as Baron, but this rank did not exist in Germany, a Freiherr is in Great Brittain a Baronet, this means, also his descendens have the title. In 19th century after the napoleonic wars, the system changed. The ranks of ruling monarchs had been Kaiser, König, Großherzog, Kurfürst, Herzog and Fürst ( ruling Counts no more existed), those formerly ruling nobility families, who lost their states 1803 to 1806 had been called after 1806 ,Standesherren'. The Knights,in Germany called Low Nobility or Country Nobility, had been still called Freiherr, when this rank could be given to the descendens, when it was only given to the awarded person, like british Sir, in the document there had been the words: Was to be nobilated / Wurde in den Adelsstand erhoben. In the Knights class , it is clearly visible, who is member of an old german Knights family, and who was nobilated between 1800 and 1918. When the name after the ,von' sounds like a castle or village name, it is an old family, when the name after the ,von' is an ordinary german familiy Name, it is a New Knights family. But some non nobles also have a ,von' and some Knights have no ,von'.

At the very top of the list of Knighthoods in alphabetical order is Sir Abdul-Baha Abbas of the Baha'i Faith. During World War I when a blockade threatened the lives of civilians in Haifa, He saved them from starvation. He organized extensive agricultural operations near Tiberias, securing a great supply of wheat. Food was stored in underground pits and later systemcally distributed to inhabitants. Starting as early as 1912, He averted tragedy in the dark days of 1917 & 1918. He was made Sir ‘Abdu’l-Bahá ‘Abbás, K.B.E.

He was born a prince but a very minor one and was considered by many other European royals as not quite being Royal as his grandparents had a morganatic marriage ie: He was royal and she wasn't and the title Prince or Princess of Battenberg was invented for the family. In 1917 the Battenbergs who lived in the UK changed their name to Mountbatten and gave up their princely styles in favour of British peerages the same happened to Queen Mary's family the Dukes and Princes of Teck who had a similar background to the Mountbattens

Sea Lord Louis, Marquess of Milford-Haven, formerly Prince Ludwig von Battenburg. As an American, I find this bizarre and fascinating at the same time. This is one of the many reasons we are fascinated with the royals and shows like The Crown and Downton Abbey. But its more like a "circus" fascination. As an American, we respect the people in the room. If we meet the president of the United States, we don't bow. We shake his hand and call him "sir" or Mr. President, and thats that. But if someone meets the queen (and members of the royal family) there are specific protocols to be followed. My question is this- what is the naming system for Peers in relation to their full names? For example, Princess Diana's father was named Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl of Althorp. But he was styled as Viscount Althorp. Why? If someone seen him down the street and wanted to say hi, what did they call him? What does Althorp mean? Was Spencer his family name?
@virenabrol
@virenabrol 3 жыл бұрын
First thing - he was not Earl of Althorp he was The 8th Earl Spencer and viscount of Althorp, a nobleman can hold many titles. Althorp is a 13000 acre British estate where the Spencer family has lived for 500 years and still live there, And yes Spencer is their family/sir name. I hope this answers some of your questions

If in doubt always use the persons highest title. Knights are "Sir", the rest by the title. In the UK there is "Dame" which is the female equivalent of Knight. Not exactly nobility according to the UK, but some deference is granted. Some, but not all, of the English nobility are very precise, even touchy, about their titles. And if you think the titles and forms of address in the UK are complicated, take a look at their Heraldry (Coats of Arms) where there is still a King Garter of Arms, and a seemingly unending number of volumes of the rules of English Heraldry. I.e. The position of the tail of a lion, or other creatures, real or fictional, has special denoted meanings. In other countries, how the "tail" is depicted is a matter of art.

@zdtfdfhgjk
@zdtfdfhgjk 4 жыл бұрын
A lord is any member of the nobility currently holding a title, so any Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron is a lord. The children of lords are also lords except Barons children they are called 'The Honorable Mr./Ms ...", but grandchildren are not lords unless they are directly in the line of succession to a title, so the oldest son of the heir is also a lord. A good example is Winston Churchill. Winston's father was the son of a Duke(highest rank of lord.) so he was a lord, but Winston himself was only the grandson of a duke so he was technically a commoner.

@@LewisAndHisLandy That's correct, but a duke is a lord all the same. Traditionally a duke is considered of the higher nobility, whereas lower ranks of nobility are often seen as clearly noble, but not of the same class as a duke. There is also one HUGE thing left out of this video which is the case of “The Baronet” a baronet is not a peer , but it is an hereditary title Baronets are referred to as “Sir X 10th Baronet” etc they rank above all knights but below a Baron - they are sometimes incorrectly referred to as an “hereditary knight” but this is not correct. Baronets are their own unique honour and for something Debretts refer to as “The Baronetage”
@baronedipiemonte3990
@baronedipiemonte3990 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct. But please remember that the laws in the UK regarding the peerages and nobility are not the same as other countries. In the former Kingdom of Italy and Kingdom of Sardinia, Knights were nobility, (and are currently in Spain) above Patrizio (Patrician), and below Nobile' (Nobleman). Nobile', is to the best of my knowledge, the closest Rank equivalent to the English Baronet - if ranked in order in a similar fashion to military/nato ranks.

um a note from Canada, Canadian citizens can not hold titles or honours with titles, with some exceptions which Ill mention at the end. It was a law, kinds of silly if you ask me for honours as they are for a persons achievements. An example of this is the Order of Saint John, in Canada the senior grades are unavailable as, by the orders rules, the individual with said grade is referred to as "Sir NAME". However, the exceptions I mentioned earlier are for: 1) Officers in the Canadian Armed Force who are called "Sir or Ma'am(note not 'Sir/Ma'am Name', just Sir/Ma'am)" or their rank, 2) Ministers(i.e Minister of Defense, ect) in the House of Commons have the tittle "The Honorable Name" and it is just while they hold the position, 3) the Prime Minister has a special tittle in a)formal "The Right Honorable" b)informal Prime Minister c)Diplomatic His/Her Excellency, 4) other titles are just by job or position for example in Vancouver the mayor is "His/Her Worship" but no one really uses it. Other then that we have an almost identical honours system to the UK. Great Vid!

@noelfollett3486
@noelfollett3486 3 жыл бұрын
@@handywijaya3689 "Worship" is derived from "worthship" meaning something/one of value or note. Before they started messing around with the marriage service, the groom promised to "worship" his bride - but this part was forgotten when people got up in arms about "obey". The choice now is worship and obey or neither. But language meaning has moved on in 500 years: in the same way that worship no longer mean getting on your knees and bowing, obey no longer means "doing as your told"!

@@erogito917 That is true, but Baronets are still a part of the genre of your presentation - you could say that a baronet is the "missing link" between hereditary and life only honours. There are permanent stall plates in order chapels (not all orders have permanent stall plates) spanning centuries (so you can see who came before you). Also, some regalia must be returned on death of the person incestitured. Also, a baronet ranks above all knights and dames (Save order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle knights and dames).

Apart for it's PR value, it's difficult to conceive a system whereby a person's future, prospects and standing is determined by a title, not earned but bestowed by a quirk of history. I bet that anatomically royal blood is indistinguishable from "common" blood. Yet we give it so much more value? Very strange

Yes, she is G's heir, but something would have to happen to Charles and Wills first too. By the time they are gone, there's a good chance G will have kids of his own who will boot Charlotte down the line, if the monarchy is still around by then. Odds of her ever being queen are very slim. If G has a legitimate daughter before any sons, that would be different as she couldn't be usurped by a younger brother.

No - as a woman unless you are the wife of a baron you are not entitled to call yourself a Baroness - in England you would be entitled to us “the honourable”only if your Father is a baron - if it is an uncle , grandfather or cousin then you have no title and are a commoner

I was curious myself , so did some research - the rules are indeed different in Belgium - and actually titles of ten descend to all sons and UNMARRIED daughters - so depending on the rules of your particular title - you would be referred to as a baroness - (this is most likely) However if you are already married you would take your “style” from your husband - if he has no rank then you would be “Mrs”

I have never understood why female version of Earl is Countess. I do understood that the title of Countess comes from continental practice but on the continent it made more sense because the male version would be Count (as opposed to Earl) and I also understand that the title of Earl came from the ancient Nordic tongue from known as Jarl but the question still remains why not have the titles consistent instead of taking them from two different languages of origin?

What about Esquire - a Knights assistant or shield bearer. Those above military rank of leutenent, flight leutenent or army captain. Those civilians with a Masters degree (but note the Oxbridge MA is a wicked lie, only honoris causa). An esquire should be adressed not as Mr but initials and surname. eg AE Houseman or AJP Taylor - though these had the fake MA (hc) from Oxford. I should be addressed as PC Robinson due to having an M.Sc. so dont you forget it. I think a small bow would be appropriate for me, especially those who went to Eton and Oxbridge - or perhaps "oh Master of infinite wisdom" to those, like me, who went to Grammar School. So there.

Australia in 2016 for the second time stopped awarding Knighthoods and Dames even though it's a monarchy and the Queen is the Queen of Australia. The highest award now is a companion or Commander of the order of Australia. Just a couple letters after their names, Pretty pathetic.The chip on Australia's shoulder is big! No such problem in New Zealand though, much more mature place.

Lord Elvin You are wrong on a couple counts there. A knighthood was originally the highest honour as part of the order of Australia, but due to a socialist government coming to power this was scrapped. Interesting how very Republican nations like France and Italy and maybe even Ireland have Knighthoods, cos it's all part of European history and culture which is also the foundation of Australia.

Lord and Lady are honorary titles of address. Britain has a scheme of disappearing titles. In Europe, for instance, in many countries every child can use their parent's titles, resulting on a proliferation of counts and barons. In Britain only the oldest son usually can inherit. For instance, the son of a Duke will "borrow" one of the Duke's subsidiary titles and call himself "Marquise of so-and-so". He doesn't actually own the title, he is merely using it in an honorary way. Other younger children will be given the honorary title of "Lord" or "Lady". Thus Diana, Princess of Wales, was Lady Diana Spencer because her father was the Earl Spencer. Her brother was Viscount Althorpe because he borrowed a subsidiary title of his father. The son of a younger Lord or Lady will be called "the honourable", thus Winston Churchill, the son of Lord Randolph Churchill, and grandson of the Duke of Marlborough, was called "The Honourable Winston Churchill" until he was knighted. In succeeding generations there are no titles left. Others have pointed out other ways the term "Lady" can be used.

oriel octave That is correct, but Baronets also have a territorial description after their Name, to distinguish different families with the same name. Also a Baronet would have the Letters Bt or Bart after his title to differentiate them from ordinary knights. Sir John XXXX Bt, or Sir John XXXX Bart, fifth Baronet of XXXXX. If you married one, you would become (if your first name is Oriel,) Lady Oriel. Hope this helps.

It's the second highest rank in the peerage in any country. It ranks below the rank of Duke, and is often the title used by the heir to a dukedom, as his father would have lesser titles as well. A marquess ranks above the other ranks of Earl/Countess; Viscount/Viscount and Baron/Baroness. Mrs. Marquess is called a Marchioness. A baron 's wife is a baroness -NOT - a Baronet - that is a lesser title OUTSIDE of the peerage, but is inheritable. In Europe, it's called an "inherititary knighthood".
