8:00 the marines used the colt potato digger in 30-40 krag (roughly equal to a 303 british cartridge) the gun was belt fed by 250 round belts ( like a vickers) and fired at about 500 rounds a minute ( like a vickers) but didnt have water cooling so it couldnt fire for as long without getting to cool off..

Yes, the Marine Corps is still very proud of their moniker of "Devil Dogs." I went to the high school on the Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune and the high school's mascot was "the Devil Pups."

Who said anything about Dan Daly fighting in WWII. He died before WWII. I reread my comment just to make sure. I know I didn't and I have watched and rewatched the video and the Fat Electrician never said that he fought after WWI.

The US Army had been contacted by John Browning about a new machine gun he'd developed to be built by Colt. The Army was not impressed but the Navy bought 200 of the first issue in the 6mm Lee cartridge and more later. Curiously enough, Teddy Roosevelt bought two units for his Rough Riders. The US Marines used the "potato digger" in the Defense of the International Legation during the Boxer Rebellion. Canada also bought some and initially used them in 1914 in France. Those were replaced with Vickers, a better gun, as soon as the Brits could equip them.

Dam Daly was required study in Boot Camp, and recommended reading thereafter. The machinegun used by Pvt Daly in Peking was affectionately called the "Potato Digger" for the way the action cycled. It was chambered for .30-40 Kraag. Think about this, if Daly was such an outstanding NCO but would have been "just another officer" what does that say about the outstanding nature of Marine Corps officers?

We absolutely do still call ourselves Devil Dogs. When a country with the fighting capability that Germany had in WWI calls your people Hellhounds you wear that title with pride. We still call each other Leatherneck too and that dates back to fighting pirates the early 1800s. Marines wore leather collars around their necks to protect them from swords.

i forgot to mention in the us navy v iran video you asked about prior to that opp when was the last time the us shot down an enemy plane the short answer was yes lybia the gulf of sydra but with that there were 2 incidents and lybia lost 2 migs each time F14 tomcats did the shoot down there is a video on the platform with actual radio traffic

It does suck the French have been handed the “soft coward” badge in the current era because for much of history, they were strong ancient tribals, strong medieval kingdoms, muskets are introduced and suddenly they’re again a strong civilization, strong in the classical era, they get pummeled but fight valiantly in the First World War, then in the face of annihilating, they get weak and now everyone claims they’re weak cowards without spines. Most of their history they were considered powerful.
