As a Marine, Dan Daly is a legend. As well as the 5th and 6th Marine Corps Regiments. France awarded the Fourragere to the Marines and Sailors of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments in 1918 for their heroism and bravery in the battles of Belleau Wood, Soissons, and Château-Thierry during World War I. To this day, the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments are the only Marine Corps units authorized to wear the Fourragere. This ceremony marks a rare occurrence, in that an infantry unit that is originally from neither of those regiments received the coveted Fourragere.

@@kevintemple245 The Fat Electrician isn't entirely correct about the MOH rules. No modern recipients have more than one medal because of laws passed for the Army in 1918, and for the Navy in 1919, which stipulated that "no more than one medal of honor . . . shall be issued to any one person," although subsequent awards were authorized by issuance of bars or other devices in lieu of the medal itself. The prohibition on double awards did not technically apply to the double recipients of WWI because they received Medals of Honor from different services, which meant the same medals were not duplicated and had independent statutory authority. Later, in 1927, President Coolidge issued an executive order that forbade issuing more than one federal decoration for the same action, a policy that continues through the present time. The statutory bar on issuing multiple medals was finally repealed in the FY2014 defense bill, at the request of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, meaning that recipients can now be issued more than one medal rather than simply receiving a device for subsequent awards. However, no more than one medal may be issued for the same action.

I know a Staff Sargent that got wounded in 2 different fire fights miles apart at two different times of day, but because of the rules only got awarded 1 Purple Heart Medal. His team was on the way out of the fire base to do a patrol. As they were leaving the wire they were attacked. He got shot through the meaty part of the shoulder. It wasn't a really bad wound. Later on in the evening he volunteered to go back to duty and got rotated into another patrol team. They got about 2 miles out and got attacked again and he was shot through his larynx. He got sent home. His commander put him in for 2 Purple Hearts but He only received 1, because the rule is only 1 Purple Heart in a day

You can technically be awarded the MoH more than once, but you only get the physical medal once. This came about due to many MoH recipients being awarded the MoH from the Army and the Marines for the same action. That is what that law was intended to correct. Oh and the different branches all have different MoH medals, same ribbon color but the actual medal is a different design.

These days typically if you get awarded the MOH, you typically are retired from Active Duty effectively ending any chance of repeating the chance to earn that medal again. Personally, since I am friends with a MOH recipient I could be biased and do think they should be retired and given more than the medal and about $1400 per month pension (that's just for getting that medal, doesn't include their potential retirement of their rank that they earned and possible disability pensions cause let's face it, normally if you earn the MOH it's usually given to the next of kin, so if you are alive, we owe them far more than we give them). It's similar to the Victoria Cross, I served in the Canadian Army 1st CSOR before joining the US Army 18F (Green Berets 19th Group).

TFE got one thing wrong about that rule stating a soldier can only be awarded one Medal of Honor. Back in the day, the US had seperate Medals of Honor, one for the Army and one for the Navy. And what was happening was that some men were being awarded two Medals of Honor for the same action. The law that TFE mentions is makes it so that there’s only one Medal of Honor that encompasses all the branches. That being said, a USMC official did state that “no living Marine should be awarded three Medals of Honor.”

It was just poor timing that Dan Daly was in line to get a 3rd Medal Of Honor that the U.S. was in the middle of reevaluating who deserves to get the medal or not. Right before America entered WW1, the U.S. reviewed all previous recipients and had revoked a little over 900 medals because they were not deemed worthy of the medal. A large part of this was because they wanted to establish the MoH as the highest medal that can be bestowed and revoke any that didn't meet up to this standard. When the medal was first given during the American Civil War it was given out like candy. 864 were given to a single regiment as an incentive to reenlist and stay to protect the capitol after the Confederate invaded Pennsylvania and left the capitol undermanned. 309 of the 864 volunteered to stay and the rest went home. They ended up only needing to stay for 4 days but because of an error the names of the volunteers was lost. The War Department still gave the medal to the entire 864 men even though a majority didn't volunteer and none of them fought during this time. I don't think they didn't give Dan Daly a 3rd medal because they were trying to be mean but more to just establish how hard it is to receive it during this crackdown on the MoH recipients.

Hyper aggression is one of the most intimidating acts of war. It is taught extensively in th US military. NEVER resign yourself to defense if you have the ability to take offense. The same is true in any combat, even if you break it down to the level of a street fight. I'm 5'10" 135lbs 43 years old, and recently subdued (without hurting him), a 24 year old that had both height and weight on me. At the time of WWI, there was a tradition of Presidents serving at most 2 terms in office. Dan Daly got blocked on getting the 3rd Medal of Honor, and the military adds a limit that the Medal of Honor can be awarded only once. In WWII, FDR wins his third and fourth elections as President. A Constitutional Amendment is passed making the official limit of 2 terms to prevent a President from serving more than 8 years. If a politician can get a second term in office, heroes like Dan Daly deserve additional awards.

Technically you can be President for 10 years but you would have to have everything fall into place perfectly to accomplish this. For instance, if you are Vice President and the President resigns or dies in office and has 2 years or less left of their term, then you could finish out their term of office and get elected for 2 more terms. If the President had more then 2 years left, then you would still finish out that term but could only be elected once.

Might be a good idea to check out "The Relief of Peking", which was rather more a British action in the Boxer Rebellion.

The only reason people have never heard of Dan Daly, is that he fought against Chinese "Boxer Bands" who had the intention of killing and driving out all foreigners from China in 1900 and then years later, in 1915, he fought against Cacos insurgents who were former Haitian slaves attempting to overthrow the Haitian government after years of unrest and destabilization. The Heroism of an American Marine fighting against ethnic foreign civilians does not fit the narrative the powers that be want to embrace. So forget about the two Medals of Honor awarded to him.

Fun American military history fact: the Battle of New Orleans took place one month after the War of 1812 was over due to the slow spread of news back then...

Please keep in mind that most people who earned the Medal of Honor only receive it posthumously. I think it's more in honor of them that it's only allowed once. It's a freak glitch in the matrix that Daly survived standing up and charging into no man's land, let alone solo mow the boxer lawn, or clear the Haitian Jungle without a scratch. Dude was freakishly charmed, and he used it well. But I believe, because I'm a good person who always hopes others have good intention, that the politicos were considering those who died to earn theirs when they made their decision. You have achieved the highest honor and survived. That is the apex, anything else is superfluous.

While I don't agree with him getting screwed out of his third medal, for Americans the Medal of Honor is like being knighted in Britain except only the military can earn it.

They have an equivalent medal, The Victoria Cross. Jeremy Clarkson did a documentary about it that is very good.

@@RyanAcidhedzMurphy I know about the Victoria Cross, but it's not quite the same. We don't have royalty, so the Medal of Honor is the highest honor any American can achieve. No calls you Sir, but all military and patriotic Americans will salute and/or honor you, even if they don't like you.

Dan Daly and Smedley Butler are NOT the only two US Marines to have been awarded the Medal of Honor twice. John J. Kelly and Charles F. Hoffman were also awarded the Medal of Honor twice as well. Both men receiving the medal for actions twice in WWI.
