Much respect for British troops. Great Britain is the only country to actually send a considerably large force to Afghanistan besides the USA. We may rip on each other for certain things, but the bond between our countries is unbreakable. Sincerely, an American.

ragasdapper You are forgetting New Guinea, where the Japanese were in sight of Port Moresby. This was a bloody no holds barred campaign involving hand to hand combat and cannabilism. The Japanese were forced back inch by inch until they were trapped on the northern shore with nowhere to go. They were then slaughtered to the last man on those very beaches with neither side giving an inch, and guess what, there wasn't a Brit or Yank in sight.

America Top Ten Yup, the Falklands War was an impressive achievement of ours. The White House said it would be impossible for us to retake the islands. The only other country that could have pulled it off back then would have probably been the USA and that's about it; nobody else had the power projection to even attempt it. Thanks for the comment mate. United We Stand.
@benji76629 жыл бұрын
It was a close call to say the least however. Argentina greatly overestimated the number of British troops on the islands when they surrendered. They were still very much in a position to win.
@benji76629 жыл бұрын
***** True, i'm sure the significance around securing the islands was made known to the troops also. For Britain to lose against Argentina would have been devastating for Thatchers international standing and at home. Britain's reputation and military power and would of devastated an already low moral within the British population. Funny thing is Argentina was quite prosperous at the time and losing that war triggered a downward spiral which lead to the not so prosperous Argentina today. Could easily have been our fate. :S
@benji76629 жыл бұрын
***** Indeed they did, i cant remember the name of the anti-ship missiles they were using, began with a V. But yea they could have won with them alone, they destroyed some very significant ships with them, one missed a combat ship and hit a vital cargo ship instead. Kinda funny the most significant ship they hit they didn't even do it on purpose. Losing that cargo ship should of cost us the war, but they overestimated our position on the islands. Like i said, losing that war had a massive chain reaction which lead to the back end country of Argentina today, they will never be in a position to re-take the islands or confront Britain again.

Harun West The Re-armament of the British nation, along joining power with our loyal common wealth to gain a larger empire than before. Our ancestors done it, and I say we out stage them by creating a even more of a Marvel than the British empire, lets make them proud.
@jamth1189 жыл бұрын
Harun West Our great nation isn't done yet, we are still in control we just need to use our votes properly to take control, its labour who are mainly to blame for our current problems, we also need a Government who doesn't keep cutting the British Military Funding. In 2010 I believe our standing force was 200,000. Now our forces are 160,000 full time and 180,000 reserve. that's a 40,000 decrease of full trained troops in 5 years at this rate we wont have a military, we must take action now. I blame the Idea of a European Army that David Cameron Believes in, due to this idea they are cutting our independent army. I agree with what people say about 'what reason do we need a large army when we are not at war.' I answer with this in ww2 with a standing army France fell within 12 weeks. If we reduce our power now when the time does come we will have no power to stop it, if a nation can fall within 12 weeks that had a force, what hope would we have at this constant reduction in military strength.
@harun98289 жыл бұрын
It's fucking STUPID, what they're doing to our army - reserves only get 26 days basic training, and that's over weekends. How are you supposed to fit nine-and-a-half months' training into 26 weekends(?) It's fucking stupid.

Harun West Reserves aren't suppose to be a main battle force they are purely volunteers who doit for free, only really to be called in during emergencies, I heard reserves were sent to Afghanistan I cant be sure but if this is true it shows how bad our military situation is. We really do need a party to save our military, if we didn't have our military we would of lost the falklands war. Thank to the Iron Lady she showed our military capability that after the war Argentina that was being built up by the USA and receiving training aswell as ground to air missiles, they managed to fight a war 8000 miles away against a homeland what is impressive I believe the people will save our military, more like I can only hope.

Other thing Iam from India people in our country may like London by visiting it may have good opinion of England but I don't like England.

Most movie villains or a fictional power always have a desire or a mission to rule the world, like such a feat is bordering impossibility, Great Britain did the real thing, in a dog eat dog world, back when there was no UN, no international relation committees or summits, she had one option in an increasingly hostile world: rule them or get ruled by them. Some say it was the wrong thing to do, some say it was the right thing, but we should all agree that it was definitely the smart thing to do.

Britannia and Lusitania have an ancient and proud history. British and Portuguese alliance has stood for centuries. It saddens me that so few realise, or remember, or respect it. Its a very proud matter, I believe, if we remember it. I have a great respect for Portugal, and the Portuguese. The *Anglo-Portuguese Alliance*, stands, to this day, as the oldest alliance of nations in the history of the world. Therefore, *not only* is Portugal the oldest ally of the English, and British in turn over history, but it is also part of the *oldest international alliance in the world*. Something both should be very proud of I think, and again, something I think is sadly little remembered or educated to either. This ancient alliance is still active, and long may it be so. Formed in *1373*, the earliest official Anglo-Portuguese Treaty was signed between King Edward III of England and King Ferdinand and Queen Eleanor of Portugal. Moreover, English Crusaders had aided the Portuguese in the Reconquista, pushing Islamic influences in that time out of the Iberian peninsula, this as far back as 1147 and earlier. For many centuries the two peoples have been cooperative, friendly, trading partners and militarily allied. I really wish more people were aware of this truth, and speaking as an English Briton myself I wish that more people here realised. There are a good number of examples of Anglo-Portuguese military cooperation, including of course the role of the British in the Peninsular War as part of the Napoleonic Wars (think 'Sharpe' etc) The two world wars are also to be included. However, one of the less well spoken of, was the *Fantastic War* (otherwise known as the Spanish-Portuguese War) of 1762-1763 - a subsidiary conflict of the overall *Seven Years War*. British forces fought alongside Portuguese forces, to help maintain Portuguese sovereignty against three significant Spanish invasions of Portugal. 7,104 British fought alongside 7,000-8,000 Portuguese, against a Franco-Spanish force of over 42,000, in a series of what was mainly brilliant movements, marches, counter-marches, guerrilla warfare and scorched earth strategies and tactics, rather than any very large scale pitched battles (with most men on either side dying of diseases and in the case of the Spanish, a lot of exposure and starvation) Nevertheless, it still had some battles, such as the Battle of Valencia de Alcántara and the Battle of Vila Velha, both of which were British-Portuguese victories. Overall, the war was a Decisive Anglo-Portuguese Victory, decimating the invaders. This assured Portuguese sovereignty and became part of the overall defeat of the French and Spanish in the broader Seven Years War conflicts around the world. This war has been described by many as what was really the first real world war, with the British specifically victorious from Canada to India, from Portugal to the Caribbean, from the Germanic states to West Africa and Gibraltar. I think its one of the more important examples that deserves more recognition. It is just another example of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance in action. I am very impressed that you're seeking a further career in the British military, and I wish you all the best of luck and success in your path, however and wherever it may lead. All the best, and remember that the British will always stand beside Portugal, we must hope.
@ThePalaeontologist9 жыл бұрын
Luke Smith Why are you even saying that? What are you even trying to say for that matter, in answer to what I had myself said? Are you actually British or just some American/maybe even Russian trolling? I'd actually prefer the latter because if you are British I'm ashamed of you. Obviously you think you have a clue about strategy, and obviously you don't. Like I say, embarrassing. Basically, if in your little scenario Russia somehow invaded the UK, in what universe do you imagine that the Portuguese would be hailed upon to rally full military support to the UK? In what way does oldest ally in the world necessitate Portugal to mean also, strongest ally in the world? That is not the point =.= Portugal is obviously a smaller nation, with a smaller military. It is not equable to the British Armed Forces. But it doesn't need to be, and it cannot actually be in the foreseeable future. In most scenarios it would be British forces backing up Portugal if the chips were down, the tables reversed. Don't assume Portugal is useless to the British either, though. Look up Anglo-Portuguese relations. See the respect Sir Winston Churchill had for them. Don't forget who you are (if British) And don't forget who our oldest allies in history (and the history of all nations) are, to this day. Also your scenario is entirely ignorant of the NATO alliance forces, which while having the USA as the largest component, is actually formed of a number of European nations whose sum total of firepower and economic power as nations, rivals the USA itself. Strange as it may sound to you, clearly blinded by a lack of subtlety in your approach to understanding the delicate situation we have with international relationships in the 21st Century, many of the NATO allies would come to our side. Not only this, but the members of the British Commonwealth would doubtlessly provide assistance in some form. From European NATO members, France, Germany, Poland, Norway, Holland and a number of others share interests in the continuing stability of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Do not think of this in 18th Century terms for pities sake. British Army and armoured units are on active training exercises with the Polish Army in Poland, as well as still maintaining some bases in Germany. It is a show of support and strength to our NATO allies against the perceived consensus of Russian hostility and provocation in the east of Europe, in the time of the presidency of Putin. Not to start a 'flame war' on this, but to sum it up briefly, I'd say I think it is wise to strengthen NATO in case the fears are truly justified. Its the best and most reasonable logic for defence purposes. Portugal, of course, cannot stand to be ranked among the very strongest of the NATO allies, as it just not possible to be so. But that is to entirely miss the point; they support us, culturally, politically, logistically, diplomatically and there has existed a mutual respect between the British and Portuguese (to a large extent) for *centuries*, as I explained with Anglo-Portuguese relations being very healthy since the time of the Crusades. Let that sink in. Now, if in your pointless scenario, the UK was invaded by Russia (which would assume the premier class RAF and Royal Navy has somehow casually been swept aside to even allow a land invasion, which they plainly would not be in my opinion) Not only would the British Armed Forces be more than capable of holding the beachheads and inflicting massive damage with their superior weaponry, discipline and training coming into effect, but the Russians would have to soon deal with a host of NATO allies (not just including the USA) bearing down on them. It would be in *nobodies* interest for the UK to even risk falling to Russia. Fortress Britain is a bulwark in the west. In WWII, Americans considered France and the UK to be their own first line of defence in the west, and that is part of why Americans did not for a long time, feel too concerned about the successes of the Nazis. Britain held out, and yes the geographical advantages of our waterways and island archipelago status, does massively contribute to our defensive capabilities, but the British were and still are a fighting people, who do not surrender so easily as others hope (look at the Falklands War for example) We don't go down without an epic fight - and even then, by far most times we win or survive the fight anyway without falling. We should rightly be proud of our strength. Do not doubt our strength. Too often I see the needless self-flagellation spoken by pathetic, uber-far-left weaklings who would see us weakened in our defence budgets until we were practically inviting trouble. Mainly middle-class soft arse cry babies who don't really understand an honest days work if it hit them in the face, who snobbishly consider anyone less well off than themselves in the UK, to be automatically less intelligent or important in the understanding of politics, current affairs and military strategy. Little posh kids who think they are beyond reproach intellectually, erudite in philosophical and socio-political terms, whereas in reality they are just as if not more so dangerous than the extreme far right that held sway in the middle of the previous century. I loathe both extremes, and if people think any extreme is wise, that is a fundamentally naive and dangerous mentally to have. The pendulum swings, the fortunes of war and the paradigms of humanity including, over the shifting sands of time. Nothing lasts forever, and immortality in ideas only lasts as long the mortal people themselves. It is never good to stand on the wingtip of either extreme. Toe the line, down the midriff of the bird of prey we call political orientation. It is the weakling mentality of the far left that is responsible for so much of the bad that is happening in the world. They'd claim a monopoly on ethical behaviour, moral superiority, and yet at the same time callously turn their backs on entire ways of life that matter to other people, and ignore pressing socio-political, economical and military defence concerns. All to live in their self-spun delusion of a 'perfected' liberal paradise. There can simply be no such thing in this world, sadly. Idealism is never stable or safe, that much is sure. We cannot disarm ourselves in this dangerous world, it would be folly. We must be strong. Remember that it was our people who once maintained the greatest imperium in the history of the human race, ruling over half a billion people about a hundred years ago (and it has been estimated that if Britain still had those former colonies, that the population of the British Empire would theoretically now in 2015 be over 2.2 Billion or something around that number, ie nearly 1/3 the population of the world) Remember that it was our people who forged a legacy of industrial, agriculture, technological, medical, broader scientific, military, educative, sociological and artistic advances, that is still felt around the world to this day. Of course all empires were and are flawed, yet to nay-say the entire sweep of the British imperium, in its entire history and influence, would go too far. Look at what our little islands achieved, just look. To this day, the only modern hyperpower (thats one up from superpower, because at a time *nobody* messed with us; see Pax Britannica) Remember also that Britain's military, our armed forces, is an outstanding entity, and are respected/in some cases feared around the world. We are no longer a Hyper-power or Superpower faction, but we are still literally designated as a Great Power. The 4th/5th strongest country in the world depending on how we look at things. Portugal is an ancient friend of the British, another ancient people. We should cherish the symbolic and literal alliance held between the UK and Portugal, and not because we'd expect them to send over their army to help us (though that would be a wonderful gesture, which the British would surely return if we remembered our oldest friend in the world that is) but because of matters regarding, you know, basic human decency and friendship. Don't just eye the alliance up and down in a quick once over, only caring about and looking at the numerical disparities or the unlikelihood of even a need or use for the Portuguese to be sent over to help us in your pointless scenario on a literal basis only. Its much more than that, and you need to see this. Cooperation from other NATO members far more able to help us, would come into force, and you conveniently overlook that Britain is not on the eastern frontline as such in the warpath of Russia in that scenario, but to the north west, sat atop western europe with great advantages. Russia could not just hurl its full might at the UK without getting through the other European nations first, and I am entirely sure that the British wouldn't just watch that happen, nor the Americans. Its an integrated defence strategy on a massive scale, involving international cooperation. Great Britain has the support of NATO and her own ties to the post-imperial legacy Commonwealth nations. We are a strong people with strong friends. Don't just look to the USA as the only friend in the world we have. Believe it or not, the UK is a fairly well liked country, which is I think more than some other countries can say. Oh, and by the way, if one of Britain's Commonwealth ally connections (many of which still bearing the Union Flag incorporated into their own flag, showing the historic connection with the British sovereign) were invaded eg if India was invaded, Britain would doubtlessly be drawn in and show support for India. Remember that Canada, Australia and New Zealand (as well as to some extent South Africa) are still strong members of the Anglo-sphere, all former members of the British Empire and all with strong cultural and political ties to the British government and people. Do not forget that we are not alone in this world, and our friends are not alone either.

Luke Smith 1. Well done, heres a cookie. Don't care much about you talking personal credentials online, sorry, but not sorry. 2. Tell that to NATO. Also, I very much doubt it, and many others would disagree with you. NATO is more than a match for Russia. 3. Right, you absolutely have no idea what you are talking about. a) List these hateful nations you speak of beyond the two you mentioned - who actually, are not necessarily hateful of us at all and that is just your own opinion, when last I looked there was a reasonable international relationship between the Indians and British for example, with a large British Indian community and a lot of trade between the UK and India. b) While listing them, go ahead and list *all* the former territories of the British Empire. Go ahead, try it. I think you'll find a good representation of how we are viewed by the Commonwealth, can be seen in the Commonwealth games, which are held and participated with great pride. 4. Dear oh dear =.= if you can't work that one out, from the perspective of looking from North America's eastern seaboard to the Europeans in that direction, then I am concerned for your understanding of geography. Its really not hard to work out. Moreover there is a *blinding* historical issue with what you are trying to say - the Soviet Union in the wartime period of the Second World War was *ALLIED* to the United States and the British Empire. For heavens sake. Things went south and got icy cold at the very end of the war leading into the *Cold War*... But during WW2 there was not an inherent concern in the USA from a Russian invasion of Alaska over the Aleutian Islands or something like that. It was looking from its western seaboard in concern of the Japanese Empire and its expansionism, and the Pacific campaign theatre post-Pearl Harbor. Its very easy to understand. If the UK and France suddenly vanished off the map, the Nazis would have been that much closer in the east from the USA, and for your information,Nazi U-Boat attack submarines sunk American ships merchant and even military *before* a state of war existed (Hitler goading the Americans into the war in Europe, against the advice of his generals, as usual for him) and there were even attacks by U-Boats creeping around in New York Harbor. That far west. Imagine if Britain just wasn't there as a barrier in the west of Europe, after France fell in 6 weeks. I think the full attention of the Germans would descend on Russia and strengthening France and Britain into Nazis strongholds (see Atlantic Wall) In principle, if any one of the stronger NATO European members just happened not to be there, eg UK, France, Germany etc, then the strategic balance of powers would be severely affected, and Russia in this meaningless and tasteless scenario, would be one step closer to the USA from America's viewpoint looking from its own eastern seaboard. Get it? 5. India can make its own connections with other powers, it doesn't necessarily make it a major concern. It is not a little child who the west can just say can't do as it pleases to trade and share projects with Russia, just as Russia deals with China over gas and oil for example, and yet China and the USA are cooperating to an extent as well. Its a very delicate situation in some cases for many countries, and no it does not help NATO's efforts, but that is just how it is. NATO can still hold the line. 6. How can you possibly know that? War is not always about size anyway, and a compromise of quality *and* quantity in a combined arms strategy, is the best way forward. NATO has a united front of vast military potential, and not all useful support is all about how many pairs of boots on the ground any one member nation can field. The British provide and excellent contribution, and I feel it needs to expand its regulars, not decline its regulars to make more reservists. The defence budget cuts are, to my mind, a crying shame and disgraceful betrayal of our commitments. It is true the Germans have slashed their own spending and reduced their own forces considerably, yet still, they can be regarded as a strong nation, economically the strongest in Europe as it stands. I'm sure if war commenced, the UK, France, Germany and Italy would have a massive impact standing together and thats before we even consider the USA showing up to the party. Oh and, spare a thought for Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The Baltic nations are not as weak as you have assumed them to be in ignoring them. Norway for example, has a proud military which is proportionately very large, and if I'm not too far mistaken here, I think its armed forces are around 200,000 (based on what I was told by a Norwegian student studying over here in my time at university), with compulsory military training in some form across the board in that country. Norway and the UK cooperated a lot during WW2, especially in Commando raids on the so-called Heavy Water facilities in Nazi occupied Norway itself (Hitler's attempt to make nuclear bombs, which thankfully the British and Norwegians stopped happening) They've proven damaging thorns in Russia's side before, for centuries, and the Winter War between Finland and Russia comes to mind (look it up) Obviously those examples are pretty outdated now, but it is true that they are tenacious in war and would have the full support of NATO anyway. Lets not disregard the smaller members of NATO just because...

Due to the fact that France surrendered during the second world war, with all due respect but what the fuck are you talking about? France doesn't have a good army and neither does Germany. Even if the Germans start another war with the UK the Brits would kick your backsides back to the stone age all over again.

Can I just say thank you to everybody commenting compliments about the British from other countries. It shows that competition between us won’t win anything and that allies who stand together can win everything. As a British person myself, it fills me with great pleasure knowing that there are people in the USA that admire our military, thanks again and have a nice day.

The UK seem to be very well trained and equipped! Despite the size of their country they could match the US which seems like a ridiculous statement but in reality one standard brit troop probably equals 10 highest trained us militants

Britain should start by producing her own ammunition as she used to. Our chinless wonder Parliament leaders did away with our own production facilities and now buys it ammunition from abroad. Some years back Belgium refused to supple us with ammo because it didn't agree with the war we were fighting. Maggie Thatcher made it clear what our reaction would be and Belgium backed off. Now imagine this scenario with Cameron or the Labour were in charge? Yes that's right they would be oh so polite and debate the issue for several months and our soldiers etc., would suffer and lose whatever engagement they were in. We need more destroyers, soldiers, tanks, aeroplanes and ammunition stocks including missile and heavy artillery ammo. Held within this country.Not somewhere else and under somebody else's control.

I would like to pay tribute to all branches of the British military, especially the British SAS commandos whose courage, daring, audacity, and tenacity that they have demonstrated consistently since the unit's establishment until this day are truly awe-inspiring. Much respect!
