The philosophy behind this is that there has to be a continuation of the monarchy, a head of state and a commander in chief of the army. In 1993 with the death of the last ruling king (Baudouin) the enthronement of the new king (Albert II) was two days after the funeral.

@@Dunsapie not in Belgium though. When the King dies, the country has no head of state until the moment the new King has pledged the oath. In the mean time the Government as a whole is considered the head of state.
