Queen Elizabeth's reign is now roughly equal to a human's average life expectancy. I'm watching this historical footage from a bygone era and it still baffles my mind that the queen referenced in this clip is the same one today.

The Queen actually went to 10 Downing St, rather than the other way round. She was young and knew old Winston must have been suffering at the knees. That’s purely my supposition, but it seems clear from the pictures.

As a lad I read Sir Winston Churchill’s great work ; “The History of the English Speaking Peoples”. I remember sitting with my family watching Sir Winston’s funeral on our black and white television in 1965. Like all prophets, Sir Winston had enemies. Yet, as painful as it is, unpopularity is the lot of the prophet and is - in a fallen world - proof that the prophetic have spoken the inconvenient Truth. As God raises up great men in times of discord, uncertainty and grave danger, the leadership of Sir Winston proved that he was Divinely-chosen to emancipate the world from tyranny. May our Lord give him eternal rest in Heaven.

Winston let many millions die of starvation in Bengal India. We Indians never forget. Though we moved on with the time but the scars of British cruelty will remain.

He wasn't responsible. The reasons for the famine were bad weather, the japanese invading, a complete misunderstanding of its causes, etc. He even asked FDR to send food to india.

@@user-dk9dx3xb2t He could have avoided by supplying wheat ...which was docked at bengal port but he did not do it. His won white official wrote him about the release of wheat many times but he refused and asked officials move the stock to UK. Selfish and devil minded he was. There is no difference between Winston and Hitler as both of them deliberately killed innocents the difference is one used weapons and one let people die of starvation which is more cruel actually. But now the geo politics changed, people have moved on.

I have found similar comments emblazoned all over videos about Winston Churchill and this is my reply… Well, I only the other day sent to somebody from India this reply. I hope you’ll consider it not unsatisfactory… I am very sympathetic about the loss of family you may have suffered in the Bengali Famine and nothing I’m about to say should in any way detract from the horrendous circumstance that may have ripped your family, or families close to you, apart or in any way depersonalise their torment. I simply, approaching this from an academic point of view, wish to correct your misapprehensions. The policy you mention of shipping food out of nations during starvation had been abandoned long before the 1943 Bengali famine which you mention. I descend partly from survivors of the Great Famine in Ireland which occurred at a time when Malthusian policy was in full force and the exacerbation of famine via the exportation of food-stocks was considered ‘necessary’ to maintain a ‘check’ on the population. The Great Famine killed over a million Irishmen and a succession of famines in India between the beginning of the East India Company’s rule in the 1750s and the British rule in the 1860s killed more than 10 million people. During all the years of famine, record show that food exportation was considerably higher than ordinary years which is consistent with the Malthusian doctrine. However, prevailing British attitudes towards the morality of allowing people to starve changed after decades of campaigning - going all the way back to William Cobbett and Charles Dickens - in the 1860s and 1870s*. This very quickly actuated a change in the way the government dealt with famines across the empire. For instance Ireland has another famine in 1879 and this time the British sent food over to Ireland and kept death below a few thousand. In 1880 this change of policy reached India with the introduction of the famine codes which obliged the British to send food over promptly with the outbreak of famine - reducing greatly the severity of the 1896 and 1900 Indian famines. *When it became clear that the rising population had not worsened the availability of food due to improvements in technology which increased production. I hope this preamble will be forgiven on account that it demonstrates that the horror your family and friends went through can’t have been a deliberate effort on the part of Churchill or Britain as policy had changed on this issue almost 70 years earlier. What instead you might allege is that Churchill was incompetent. Let’s examine this claim: The true instigator of the famine was the Japanese occupation of Burma which cut off the vast majority of food supply to Bengal. Churchill told his Viceroy to India that: “Peace, order and a high condition of war-time well-being among the masses of the people constitute the essential foundation of the forward thrust against the enemy….The hard pressures of world-war have for the first time for many years brought conditions of scarcity, verging in some localities into actual famine, upon India. Every effort must be made, even by the diversion of shipping urgently needed for war purposes, to deal with local shortages….Every effort should be made by you to assuage the strife between the Hindus and Moslems and to induce them to work together for the common good.” Churchill assumed that it was going to be a short famine and so rejected Canada’s offer to augment the supplies Australia had already furnished. His rationale for doing so was that supplies from Canada would take two months to reach India whilst Australian supplies would take just three weeks, and that Canadian supplies would be better rerouted to Australia for war purposes. Whilst an understandable decision, this proved to be a grave mistake. The famine continued into 1944 by which point vast numbers of people had died and Churchill was beginning to come under scrutiny for his handling of the crisis. His calculations (he did similar ones for Italy in 1943 and Greece in 1944) suggested there was sufficient food for everybody in Bengal providing it was evenly distributed. When informed that some ‘speculators’ were hoarding large amount of food in anticipation of consequential price rises, he complained that the Indians should have to ‘accept the same sacrifices’ as the rest of the empire (I.e. through rationing food) and thus should be expected to share what resources they had with their brethren. Nonetheless these ‘speculators’, sometimes unflatteringly described as ‘vermin’ continued to hoard vast quantities of food as the famine persisted and, presumably to divert attention, many of them blamed Britain (who itself was not in a position to furnish food) for not contacting the US to ask for assistance. Consequently, Churchill wrote to Roosevelt and said the following: “ I am seriously concerned about the food situation in India….Last year we had a grievous famine in Bengal through which at least 700,000 people died. This year there is a good crop of rice, but we are faced with an acute shortage of wheat, aggravated by unprecedented storms….By cutting down military shipments and other means, I have been able to arrange for 350,000 tons of wheat to be shipped to India from Australia during the first nine months of 1944. This is the shortest haul. I cannot see how to do more. I have had much hesitation in asking you to add to the great assistance you are giving us with shipping but a satisfactory situation in India is of such vital importance to the success of our joint plans against the Japanese that I am impelled to ask you to consider a special allocation of ships to carry wheat to India from Australia….We have the wheat (in Australia) but we lack the ships. I have resisted for some time the Viceroy’s request that I should ask you for your help, but… I am no longer justified in not asking for your help“ Roosevelt deeply regretted his inability to oblige on account of the necessity of maintaining supplies ahead of the planned reconquest of France. Whatever you make of the President’s decision, Churchill cannot be blamed for it. Your ancestors were wronged not by Winston Churchill, but by the murderous imperial Japanese cutting off food supply and by some individuals in India hoarding the food which was supposedly designated for its desperate inhabitants. I hope to provide some links and source references but I’ll do that in a separate comment as KZbin have quite a propensity to delete comments with links in as spam. Enjoy the rest of your day, Der
