The reason for drying the nets is to make them a lot easier to shoot.

It's because the nets are natural fibres not nylon or polyester. Like old cotton sails if not cared for they will rot and fall to pieces.

The nets made of natural fibres had to be barked a die boiled in vats and the nets were soaked in it to prevent them rotting bark came from the bark of a tree when boiled it was a brown liquid I remember long lengths of barked nets hanging drying along our sea front harbour railings it’s a smell you never forget happy days all gone now as lads we used to pick up dropped herring and set up a stall and sell them to the public 1d each for pocket money
