This is some of the best footage of early Disneyland I've ever seen

Seriously man. I would love to be here opening day

@@FloridaThoosieopening day was a disaster. From what I’ve heard, many things were still being built, it was crowded, no water fountains, and lots of children were separated from parents.

Amazing footage. Such clarity. Really shows a Disneyland before it got too crowded. Nice and simple.

To be fair, Disneyland was overly crowded when it opened on July 17, 1955. It only took the park 90 days to hit 1 million visitors. It has always been crowded lol.

I grew up in Southern California in the 1960s, about 40 miles (about 64 km) from Disneyland, I have many happy memories of Disneyland in the late 1960s. One of my parents was from England, so some of those British tourists in the 1960s and 1970s were my relatives! Great memories of them arriving into Los Angeles international airport usually on Pan Am from Heathrow, and then a couple of weeks later we as a family all went to Disneyland.

Growing up in Santa Ana and we went every summer. We could see the fireworks from our roof. Better times back then.

When I was a kid, eons ago, my parents took my sister and me to Disneyland once a year. 1968 was one of those years. I have been back a few dozen times since then and the place has certainly changed over the decades but the walk down Main Street USA is easily one of the best experiences I have ever enjoyed. So, thanks for posting!

What a great video! I love the Pan Am 707 at the beginning. If you look closely, the Main Street sidewalks don't have those horrible paving stones, and the ground throughout the park is smooth cement. I love the Mine Train and the non-Nemo Subs. I wish I could go back in time, and go to THAT (much superior) version of Disneyland. Maybe one day I'll be able to, through the magic of virtual reality...

Greg Jones, the different pavements are to add to the theming, smooth, grey concrete is very out of place in Frontierland, dirt- colored with horse tracks is a much better fit!

“Ten miles away as you’re driving here, you’ll see a mountain that looks just like the Matterhorn.” That was a little embellished, even for 1968. We used to have a contest to see who could spot it first. By my senior year in high school, 1974, there were plenty of buildings in the area that were taller than the 147 foot high Matterhorn (not to mention calculating for Earth curvature). One could hardly spot the Matterhorn before the Harbor Blvd off-ramp from the Santa Ana Freeway, let alone from ten miles away!

This was shot ad-hoc on film while the park was teeming with guests, pretty much impossible to film the ride in the dark without huge staging lights to have something even show up in the image.
