STV. Bookies. SCU. Bookie shouting odds and taking money. GV. Horses parading up course and some cantering back to start. CU. Tick-tack men. Angle shot of a bookie. GV. Horses lined up at start. SV. Start of race. LV. Pan, horses racing towards 1st jump. GV. Horses approaching 1st jump. They jump and three horses fall. SV. Crowd watching. Travel shot, horses over 1st jump again. SCU. Horses jumping 2nd jump. Travel shot with horses. They jump 3rd jump. Horse No 7 running in second place. Travel shot, horses jumping 4th jump. Horse No 10, Armorial, leading. Armorial trips and falls to the ground, No 7, Sundew, has now taken the lead. Travel shot as No 7 takes the 5th jump. Travel shot with No 7 leading. Travel shot as No 7 takes the 6th jump and stumbles by the jockey rights him. Back shot as the horses come over the 6th jump and horse No 24, Irish Lizard, falls to the ground. Pan shot as No 7 still leading takes to 7th jump followed by the rest of the field. GV. Horses approaching and jumping the canal turn. They jump and horses No's 35 and 27 fall. CU. Man looking through his binoculars. GV. Field approaches Valentine's Brook, jump number nine. Side view - slow motion - horses jumping Valentine's Brook. Travel shot, second horse and third horse as they jump the 10th jump. Horse No 28, Red Menace, falls. Travel shot with horses 7 and 15. CU. Horse No 7, Sundew, in the lead. LV. The leaders jumping over 13th jump. Sundew still in the lead, follow by the others. Pan with the last two as they race for 14th jump. GV. The leaders jumping over 14th jump followed by the rest. Towards the end, horse lands on jockey. SV. Crowd watching through binoculars. GV. Horses jumping water jump. SV. Towards and pan as the horses come round the corner for the second time. They appear with Sundew in the lead on the inside. Camera pans with them. Athenian racing neck and neck with Sundew as they make for 17th jump.
GV. As horses head towards 17th jump with Sundew slightly in the lead. Sundew jumps followed b y Athenian and others - no falls. SCU. Crowd looking. SV. Travel shot as the horses make towards 18th jump. Sundew about a length ahead of Athenian. Sundew jumps, the other horses are not far behind. Sundew jumps fence number 19 with Athenian close at hand and others not far apart. One horse is nearly down but he jockey pulls him together well. No falls. All make towards 20th jump. Sundew is the first over, closely followed by Athenian and others closely behind him. Same is over 21st jump. LV. Horses come into Beechers. Sundew over safely. Close thing for Athenian but he is still all right. The others are hot on their tails as they turn towards the canal turn. LV. Horses come in towards the canal turn. Sundew still in the lead, Athenian has dropped slightly into forth position. CU. Woman looking through binoculars. Travel shot as they make for Valentine's. Sundew now about a length or two in front. Second is China Clipper racing neck and neck with another horse. Sundew over Valentine's and others are on his heels as camera travels with him. Making towards 26th jump. Sundew over, closely followed by others. Glorious Twelfth can be seen. Making the water jump, Sundew over, Glorious Twelfth has moved up into about fifth position. Head-on view as they come towards 28th jump. Sundew over. Another horse strongly challenging him. Glorious Twelfth is lying fifth. We stay on the jump as horse tries to go over and his jockey hits the deck. LV. Horses come towards 29th jump. Sundew over and Glorious Twelfth still fifth. Others continue to jump fence. Camera pans to back view, Sundew is over 30th fence and going onto the racecourse. LV. Pan, Sundew, six or eight lengths clear making for the finish as camera pans with him - he passes the post. GV. Crowd looking on. SV. Sundew flanked by two policemen on horses walking through crowd, & SV. Sundew being led in by owner Mrs Geoffrey Kohn. SV. As they come to the winner's enclosure and jockey dismounts. SV. Mrs Kohn smiling. SV. Sundew. SCU. Mrs Kohn making fuss of Sundew and rubbing his nose, & SV.

I backed Wyndburgh and Glorious Twelfth that year. I listened to the race at my Aunt's home. Great memories!!

Sundew was massive , a proper old fashioned chaser , great combination with the master jockey Fred Winter .

My step dad was the stable lad who looked after Sundew he is shown on the video he loved that horse.

I remember the race was run on Wednesday in those days.

29th March 1957 was a Saturday actually. Pretty sure the race was usually run on a Saturday though there might have been exceptions just after the war. Not sure yet would get a quarter of a million people attending on a Wednesday

The fences were so much sturdier and harder to jump in those days. The horses can jump through them in 2022. Great for safety of Horse and Jockey ,it does take the gloss of the race though .
