162 games in 6 months, with only 1 off day per week. Teams will often play double headers (two games in one day) to make up games postponed for weather. And you have to play all of these games while succeeding in the batter's box no better than 40% of the time for even the most elite of players. Baseball might not be the most physically demanding sport, but I think it is the ultimate mental grind in athletics.

Baseball is accumulated drama. Each game builds its own drama over the course of 9 innings. Each game builds the drama for the season. The culmination is the World Series. And though only Canada and America have teams, the players come from all over the world. Japan, Korea, Australia, many if the Caribbean nations, South America and even the Netherlands.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been on a great run the previous two years (and have the best rocked so far this year), but haven’t won it all in a bit. Their ballpark (Citzens Bank Ballpark, aka The Bank) is hands down the most insane crowd in MLB right now. They have superstars and Philly is a notoriously hard-nose, blue collar, working class town. I highly recommend giving them a look. There are a bunch of videos of their last two seasons playoff runs which are electric, even though they didn’t win it all.

There's a quote about MLB, "How can you not be romantic about baseball?". Some of these moments you're watching have HUGE implications on people's seasons. Some of them were HR's keeping people's seasons alive, others were part of breaking 80+ year losing "curses". The NFL gets more fans at a lower enthusiasm level but MLB moments are priceless. These moments become part of social memory. People forget the Super Bowl as soon as the next season begins.

The numbers on the fence are distance markers in feet. My team is the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the fence at their field is 325 ft. straight down the foul lines (the white lines running down the sides of the field) and 410 feet at the deepest point in center field. Most other MLB ball parks have similar field dimensions. But keep in mind that a lot of home runs in this clip were clearing the fence by a good 100-150 ft. 😉

@BritPopsReact Yes, I go often. The MLB games used to last about 3 hours on average, but last year the MLB instituted a pitch clock which forces pitchers to pitch to the batter within 15-20 seconds. Prior to that, the pitchers could take as long as they wanted in-between pitches. Now, after the pitch clock implementation, games are taking about 2 hours 40 minutes on average. But remember that if the game is tied, the game will go to extra innings until there is a winner. I believe that some of the longest extra inning games lasted 25 or 26 innings (normally there are 9) and lasted about 8 hours.

Definitely check out the highlights from the 2023 postseason: Braves & Phillies games 2 & 3. MLB averages 2.5 hours, NFL 3.5 hours, NBA 2 to 2.5 hours (commercials & commentary included) Also, if you two live near London, MLB is playing a 2 game series this June at West Ham (?). I would definitely check it out, even if you don’t go inside, there will be a bunch of stuff surrounding the stadium (games, food) for all ages.

The 9 players you see on the field for defense are the same as the lineup of 9 hitters. The lone exception is the pitcher, who is replaced in the hitting lineup by a Designated Hitter (DH). This rule was adopted by the AL (but not the NL) in the 1970s, so for 100 years prior to that all teams in both leagues had pitchers batting. Then from the 70s onward the DH rule served as a key difference between the two leagues, with the DH rule becoming universal to both leagues finally by 2020.

There are 9 rounds in baseball (called innings.) A game can go into overtime if at the end of the 9th inning the score is tied. If neither team scores or the overtime inning ends in a tie another innining is started (e.g. 10th' 11th' 12th inning.) All players on a team have a theoretical chance of being at bat (whacking a ball with a stick) as long as the game is still on. Usually a coach will put the pitcher and the designated relief pitcher towards the end of the batting line-up to minimize the risk of them getting injured. The strike zone box is a bit hard to explain in text. It is essentially an area relative to the batter's body from below the shoulders to either below or at his kneecaps (I might get that a bit wrong.) A Grandslam is essentially when the bases are loaded (i.e. a rumner occupies one of each of the three bases) and a "home run" has been hit, guaranteeing four runs (i.e. the three already on the base plus the batters.) P.s. the guy catching the ball in baseball is just called "the catcher."

One thing to remember when comparing the World Series to the Super Bowl. The World Series has 4 games played at one team’s home park, and 3 at the other. The Super Bowl is played at a neutral stadium.

As you know I'm not into sports at all.😂 However, because of work employees' summer picnics, I've been to local minor league games. It's a pretty cool atmosphere. Fans are excited and different giveaways to fans. Plus, the rest of the ballpark has tons of food, and drinks(along with alcoholic ones) and different games to play. There is a movie called A League of Their Own that is about the women's version of MLB during WWII. It's really good and historically accurate. There is a video if you guys are interested that is about the night we were told Osama Bin Laden was killed. It was at an MLB game Yankees versus Phils I believe. That particular night it was the only major sports game being played in the whole country which is unusual. Well-developed glutes are necessary when one runs that much, BP1 😂😅

In the NFL, the Super Bowl is always played at a neutral field. In the MLB, the team who has the best regular season record will have home field advantage split over the World Series. 4 games at home, 3 games away. The Super Bowl is essentially a Millionaire’s Club of passive observers. World Series tickets can be very expensive for a middle class fan, but since there are so many games, the teams can afford to lower the price for the passionate fans.

In relation to the signing the catcher gives there have over recent years been teams get into trouble for using electronic means to steal the signs from the other team then signal to the batter what type of pitch will be thrown. If it’s a player on base that observes it and uses hand signals it’s not illegal but any other means is illegal. Several teams have had multi million dollar fines for using video recordings, Apple Watches, etc to steal other teams signs.

With you mentioning how baseball crowds feel more like european football crowds, as a fan of primarily both sports I agree, they're of course different in many ways but I think what it is compared to other American sports is that baseball teams and fans tend to end up the most embedded in their local communities with the sort of passing on of fandom from parent to child for generations that just inherently brings more passion to fans. Plus besides that theres the similarity of both sports being ones with a lot of buildup of tension with much of the game being relatively quiet with moments of huge drama (I would say theres no sport more dramatic than baseball just due to how the rules and structure of play work). If you enjoy these crowds though you should try and find some videos of Japanese NPB crowds, its the second biggest baseball league in the world and Japanese baseball fan culture is even more like football in Europe, with chants for every player and stuff like that, its pretty amazing.
