Me too, even get in trouble over it. I think this is one of those misconceptions that comes from movies and the like. Sarcasm and things like that are often removed from movies meant for overseas (everything now) because they don't translate well (both legally and culturally). Even when it's left in, if it's subtle it can still be completely missed by a non native.

“If I had my druthers”…..druthers rhymes with brothers. I’m from Texas. A full tick is extremely full and they grow….huge. In my area we are more dog tired than slap out. Slap out is not heard much in my area. Hankering. “I got a hankerin” for some cotton candy” meaning “I really really want some now”. Tore up can mean physical too. If a kid is in trouble they might say “My dad tore me up when I got home” meaning he beat my ass or really yelled at me when he got his hands on me. Somehow your American accents are not really southern but better than my British one, I am sure. I enjoyed seeing you try these. Do more please. Have a great evening!

Yonder and yond both originate in Old English geond, which stems from a probable Proto-Germanic *jaino-, the source also of German jener (that one). In turn they all come from a proto-Indoeuropean stem which gave the Romans id and idem, if you want to go back that far. Yonder (the modern form) is recorded in the 13th century, but the Old English form is much earlier, though probably first recorded around the 8th century. (from Quora)

Don't think that, "Bless your heart" is always used as negative sarcasm...there are other ways it is used, for example, if someone informs you that someone else is sick you might say, "Bless his/her heart" because you feel bad that they are ill and the wishing them well... Another way if you're holding an infant and they sneeze or cry, you'd say "bless his or her" heart because it's cute. Just because someone from the south says, "bless your heart" doesn't always mean they are being sarcastic or negative.

I’ve lived and worked all over the world, I find most places in Europe and Asia claustrophobic. I believe with all my heart there’s no place like home. I love the high desert and the Sierras and Rockies, but in the Great Plaines I can breathe, and nothing is going to sneak up on you. When they refer to Oklahoma as a fly over state and say they would never want to live here, I say good. When I hear, “Y’all fix’n to stay?” I know I’m home.

As someone from Oklahoma, let me explain "Bless your heart" once and for all. Even in Oklahoma I get into arguments with people who don't realize what it means. It is NEVER used as a compliment. "Heart" is a southern synonym for "determination." If someone said "He has a lot of heart" it means "He is a very determined individual." In this sense, "bless your heart" is literally translated as "Bless your determination." Which is a VERY sarcastic way of saying "Wow, you really tried didn't you?" You'd never say "You really tried" to someone unless what they were trying to do didn't work. So "bless your heart" is only used in situations where the heart we are blessing failed at what they tried to do. You wouldn't say "Bless your heart" to someone who won first prize at a rodeo with no mistakes. But you would say "Bless your heart" to someone who got dead last in the rodeo because the bull kicked them in them stomach. Imagine a teacher handing you a golden "You tried" sticker. That's what "Bless your heart" means. It's a cozy and cheeky way to respond "positively" to the failure of those around us.

In the word ‘Druthers,’ the letter U does NOT sound like the ‘oo’ in School or boot. It’s a short U, & sounds like the U in Up, or Understand. Druther comes from “I’d rather” ____. yes the vowel sound changes, and an S gets added onto the end making it druthers, but that’s basically what it means if you had your druthers, you would be doing what you would rather do. If you visit the US south, you will notice that vowel sounds can vary and change quite a bit! Have fun on your trip!

Millie your southern accent is pretty good. My grandma use to say "pert near" meaning almost, as in "it's pert near time to eat" or "I pert near slipped on the stairs". I still use that one.

pert near or pret near: Shortened form of “pretty nearly”.

@@JustMe-dc6ks lol. pretty nearly sounds like a southern saying itself, and it still means 'almost' 😀

#9 -- you would NEVER hear "over yonder" in CA or NYC. But you could hear it anywhere on the Gulf (of Mexico) Coast. And it's a bit antiquated.

Negatively, it it's an insult and can mean the person is pitiful or clueless. Positively, it means The person is asking God to bless them. Especially, if it's a new baby... "awe!! Bless her heart, she's precious!"

Want to speak Southern? First, Slow down, it's hot in the South, the slower you talk, the cooler you are. Second, Don't pronounce your R's and G's when you're speaking "Southernese". R's often sound like W's when in the middle or end of words. Third, When in doubt, say Sir or Ma'am at the end of most sentences. Loving Left Seat Millie, Welcome to America, Rick Charleston SC

Thanks Rick. I have to agree although I have never really thought about it. The funny thing is I do talk slow but think fast. Something Yankees don’t get.

Millie's American accent is closer to true Georgia than it is to Texas, but she sounds so adorable! My own accent is what I call the "Knoxville Nuclear Belt" accent. By that I mean that range of counties closest to Oak Ridge who supplied most of the workers who built atom bombs in the '40s through the '60s. The school systems in that area received a huge influx of money because of that. So you can imagine how good the education of we children living in the area got as the potential future workforce for building nuclear weapons for the US. My Dad did, in fact, work in Oak Ridge as a Machinist, making toys for the Physicists to play with. If you gave that man a blueprint, a pile of metal, and a lathe, he could make anything! That came in handy when he turned his hand to Farming. He, and to a lessor extent myself, could take a pile of scrap metal and create farm equipment from little more than a crude sketch on any scrap of paper. During the great army work caterpillar infestation of the 1970s, we did exactly that by building a crop-spraying apparatus to fit on one of the tractors. Basically, a huge plastic drum to hold the chemicals, hoses, a pump turned by the PTO (power take off, the bit on the back of a tractor that makes a bushog mower or a hay mower & baler spin), and 36 feet of angle-iron with hoses and spray nozzles to apply insecticide to our soybean crops to keep the caterpillars from eating our 400 acres of farmland to the bare dirt. We had to buy a 300 gallon drum, and the pump, and the spray nozzles, but all the framework to attach that to the tractor, Dad and I built from scrap metal. The family didn't have a spare $50,000 to buy some factory-built crop sprayer, LOL! If you ever get a chance to watch videos by the comedian Henry Cho, he and I have the same accent... --Dan
