👍🙂❤ No matter where I place my TV, those damn donkeys are laughing at me. I even tried leaving the room for a minute and coming back, but they're still laughing at me. 👍🙂❤

Here in America we have porches and mudrooms. A porch here is a place outside the home underneath a the roof near an entry point where people can sit and talk. There may be a swing and/or many chairs. A smaller porch may just a step or steps to sit on. They are used to watch people walk by in the neighborhood. A mudroom, however, is something different. It is a large room connected to either the front, side or backdoor. It is a normal sized enclosed room. It may be heated or it may not. It may have benches to sit on an places to hang outdoor clothing. People remove their shoes in this room before going into the house. Mudrooms are more common in homes in the northern US due to the frequency of snow and other muddy weather conditions. If the house is big enough, it my have a porch connected to the mudroom. The porch is always outside the house.

Drive-thrus are more pervasive in the U.S. than in the U.K. As you mentioned, one can opt for drive-thru to conduct basic banking services. In some cities, they are also available for pharmacy prescriptions, ballot box voting, flu vaccinations, library book returns, and dry cleaning. I suspect Lawrence was referring to the variety of services beyond fast food that are offered in America.

I believe he's talking about since he last lived in the UK 16 years ago. Perhaps they did have these things so much in the town he grew up in.

I attended school in England from 4th, 5th and 6th grade. It was not a British school .. but American on RAF Upper Heyford. During inclement weather we entered through the back where we took off our rain gear, rubber boots, jackets etc. and hung things on hooks before entering the school room. Why a mud room is hard to understand just blows my mind. I understood it in 1960.

Adirondack chairs get their name from the Adirondack Mountains in northern New York State-- near the Canadian border. They were created there about 1900.

The mud room is also intended to moderate the weather. Especially when it is cold, you come in and close the outside door before you open the inside door to keep the cold out.

In the USA we have drive thru's for more than food and coffee. Dry cleaning, banks not just the ATM, Utilities companies, liquor stores, convenient stores, pharmacies, Car tags( License plates) this is not technically a drive thru but you you can order your groceries on line and drive to the grocery store park in the designated spots and they bring your groceries to your car!

@@aliciajames8038 I just paid my electric bill through the drive thru. I was only 1 of 3 cars and one of the others was using the drop box, lol. I definitely use the bank/ATM and pharmacy on occasion but sometimes going inside is faster at some fast food places.

Outside of food places, we have drive-thrus for ATM, pharmacies, banks, utility companies, coffee shops, wedding chapels (Vegas baby, lol), liquor stores, funeral homes (creepy but ok), during lockdown drive thru testing sites, some grocery stores apparently as well. As far as the porch pirates, some people actually follow around delivery vans especially during Christmas time and see who's getting a delivery, wait for the van to leave and then swipe them after the driver has confirmed delivery.

That's absolutely crazy! I thought we were doing well with our ever expanding fast food drive throughs with the odd coffee shop one too. You guys literally have them for everything! :)

@@AliKaiProject as far as porch pirates, people have gotten REALLY creative in payback. Glitter bombs, stink bombs, fake packages. Some have chased down the culprits to get their stuff back because they caught the theft in real time on their RING cameras while calling the cops for backup...crazy stuff.

What is not understood is here in America we have had these things since the 1970s
@themourningstar338
@themourningstar338 8 күн бұрын
Or earlier. Drive-thrus (1970's), Vans shoes (1960's), mixer taps as the standard (1950's), Adirondack chairs (1900, modern design 1930's). And since Laurence mentioned it, A/C (became widespread for commercial use during the 1930's-70's, then also became widespread for residential use during the 1970's-80's).

@@debneuweiler9867 You were spot on that the things mentioned were either already well established, or well on their way by the 70's. I get why most of these haven't been a thing in the UK until recently, if at all. But the one that is mind boggling to me is the mixer taps. They've only started switching over to them in the last 20 years, when they've been the norm here for 65+ years 🤷‍♀

Mud rooms and a porch are not the same thing. A mud room is for removing boots or shoes before entering the house. Some people have mudroom in the back as well as the front or side entrance. A mun room typically includes a bench to remove footwear and hooks on the wall for coats, especially rainwear. And an umbrella bin

Our porches are small hallways when you first enter your home, like a small room attached to your house, before you enter the main building.

Vans are definitely great shoes. However, I HATE chairs that drop my butt far below my knees. It kills my back. Those chairs are human rights violations.
