For tornados, we get the cold air from the north and the Rocky mountains that comes in and mixes with the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico which creates wind sheers that start horizontal then stand up. Earthquakes happen when tetonic plates rub against each other. California has the San Andreas and part of the Juan de Fuka fault lines being the 2 big ones and many many smaller plates.

You can get a lot more warning time with hurricanes and volcanoes and are able to leave the area or stay where you are if you choose. With earthquakes and tornadoes, there’s very little warning, if any, to just find a safe place.

Earthquakes can be caused by 3 primary events: underground caves collapsing, volcanism and plate tectonics. On the east coast, in the Atlantic Ocean, new land is being formed and pushes our continent westward. On the west coast is the zone of destruction where two plates overlap and our plate is forced downward, causing the earth to shift sometimes violently which causes the various degrees of earthquakes on the Richter Scale. The west coast also has volcanic activity in the Oregon Cascade Range…then there is Yellowstone Super Volcano.

I had just moved to Santa Cruz, California to go to college when the Loma Prieta quake hit (Oct. 17, 1989, magnitude 6.9). Five years later, I had moved back to Pasadena, California when the Northridge quake hit (Jan. 17, 1994, magnitude 6.7) When you've experienced that sort of shaking, anything less than a 4.5 is nothing.

The San Andreas Fault, which is two tectonic plates sliding against each other, runs through the middle of Southern California, moving more west, and finally running directly through the center of San Francisco travels. There are also many other smaller faults splintering off of that throughout the majority of California. Also, in terms of wildfires, California is basically a hotbed for the occurrence of dry brush/years of drought/Highwinds = much amounts of nastiness

The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was the result of hubris. At that time Galveston was a barrier island. In which the highest elevation was less than 9 feet above sea level. The scientific belief at that point was that the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico would not be able to bring up a strong storm surge because it would spread out more. Also, at that time the US censored weather data coming from Cuba. When the storm left Cuba. The Cuban meteorologists were the best in the world at understanding a predicting hurricanes. They were convinced the storm was going to veer west towards the Gulf of Mexico. The US observers thought the storm was going to move up the Atlantic coast towards New England and so the city of Galveston and its residence were caught by complete surprise. After the storm people stayed to rebuild their city. The built a 17 foot tall seawall and raised the elevation of the entire island to meet the top of the seawall. It was a tremendous scientific and technological accomplishment. Surviving buildings, sewer lines, gas lines, etc. Everything had to go up.

As a person who lives near the volcano, Mt Rainier. I can say you don't really think about it. You know it can blow at any moment and where I live it is in the direct path of where the lahar (mudslide) that is estimated will be 100 feet tall moving 45-50 mph. Monthly my city test the lahar siren that if the mountain blows will starting making a loud siren and tell us to run away. Basically I have about 30-45 minutes to get to high ground if the mountain blows up. Everybody always assumes they will live when it blows up but remember this is a volcano. You need to think of it in geologic years, it could stay dormant for 1000 years and that would be nothing to a volcano. I worry about my family that live in Florida where they have to worry about hurricanes every year.

11:59 I agree with getting rid of Tornadoes. I live on the East coast so it is rare for us to get them in comparison to Tornado Alley. However, Tornadoes still scare me the most because of how suddenly and quickly they can form which can surprise you. Plus, the housing in the East isn’t really ideal for Tornado situations especially in my state because housing usually doesn’t include Basements. A Hurricane you can see coming from miles away because they form in the Ocean and travel to the coast (ie drive yourself away from the coast in advance to get away before the storm hits), Volcanoes and Earthquakes (there should be some earth activity/warning that scientific instruments will pick up) and Wildfires (one can abandon the home before the fire takes over the neighborhood). So yeah….I agree as the Tornado is the one that can form and demolish in mere seconds.

The west coast of the US is a large portion of the Ring of Fire and is the subduction zone of the Pacific tectonic plate. The internal land mass includes features like the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. The south central states see influences by the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River,while the north central states are heavily effected by the arctic atmospheric rivers and the Great Lakes. On the east coast we have the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf Stream, the Appalachian Mountains etc. The point being, the US is very big and our weather reflects the varied geological features that sweep across our nation from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean; from the Arctic Circle to the Equator. Hope that helps😊

I'm in California. Earthquakes are big here because two large plates on the surface of the planet meet here. They push up against each other building up energy until one day a plate shifts. That releases the energy in the form of an earthquake. We are due for an especially large release of energy but it's impossible to know exactly when that will happen. Wildfires happen because we have large areas of forest plus it can get very warm and dry out here. So you can have a year where there is a lot of vegetation for burning and it's all dry. All it takes is a spark and you have a raging wildfire.
@nathanmclaughlin304
@nathanmclaughlin304 Ай бұрын
She is right about geography being a factor. Earthquakes have to do with where the tectonic plates meet along "fault lines" California has the largest one in the United States of America. Quakes happen along areas where tectonic plates meet and are under stress. Volcanic areas have some of the best soil for agriculture. But always a chance of flaming fire...

Hurricanes are only in the bottom right corner of the USA like Florida and surrounding states. Tornadoes are mainly in tornado alley which is like texas, oklahoma, nebraska, iowa, illinois, indiana, tennessee, kentucky area, volcano is west coast but kind of rare, so you just do not live within 40 miles from a volcano and you should be fine. So it is really easy to avoid these things if you are nervous about them. do not worry about these things. I am 55 yrs old and only had 2 small earthquakes that barely were even noticeable. like a semi truck driving past is what it felt like. also had a couple tornado warnings but never had an actual tornado go by. so out of 55 years that is nothing.

I live in the mid-Atlantic part of the U.S., specifically Washington, DC. We rarely get anything save hot humid summers, an occasional snow storm -- less these days -- and the aftereffects of a hurricane that's come up from the south (sometimes Tornadoes are a part of that). The last serious hurricane we had that came directly for us was Hurricane Isobel. (Also Superstorm Sandy brushed by us.) And, once in a while, we get an earthquake, but rarely one that kills anyone. The last "big" one we had was in the 2011. It damaged the Washington Monument and National Cathedral. It was a 5.8.

There’s obvious reasons for each natural phenomenon, but an overarching explanation is the US is a large landmass crossing a variety of geologies and climates. The landmass embraces lots of geologic faults, a line of volcanoes, a tremendous amount of woodlands that can catch fire, much of it subject to drought and lightning storms. Lots of coastlines at just the right latitudes to catch hurricanes. Lots of other countries specialize in one or two phenomenon (Japan = earthquakes, Iceland = volcanoes), but the US is big enough to have it all somewhere.

You can build structures to survive hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires...volcanoes are very geographically isolated and rare in a person's life not living in Hawaii & Alaska, but earthquakes happen everywhere, leaving only the rarity of scale to hedge your bets. All in all, most of the deaths and major injuries caused by natural disasters are due to a lack of proper building requirements and poor choices, like not leaving when warned of imminent threats, and corruption to name a couple.

Tornadoes- Rocky Mountains to the west and Appalachian Mountains to the east create a funnel effect for cold air from the north and warm air from the Gulf of Mexico. The funnel effect forces these 2 extreme temps to collide in the midwest in greater force than anywhere else. Earthquake- California is on the lip of a fault point where two plates rub against each other. Most fault lines are in the ocean. Wild fires- these happen on the coast side of the Rockies and higher up in elevation. It rains, but the thinner air doesn't hold moisture so the grasses and smaller shrubbery easily ignite (from outside sources of course). Volcano- Hawaii was made due to a Volcano that has been active for centuries. Of vourse we also have one of a very few Super Volcanos located under Yellowstone. If you look up how much damage it would cause then you would see how 80% of the country would be massively devastated.

I've been through tons of hurricanes here in Florida. They can be devastating bit at least you have plenty of warning it's coming and you have several days to prepare your home and or leave. Most Florida's stay at home through them unless it's a category 5 which forces some to leave until it's over. Once the storm arrives any coastal towns that require bridges to get to them are stuck as they close all traffic going both ways until after the storm.

Just had another rash of tornados run through the Midwest today. There are seismometers that monitor volcanic activity, there are tremors detected prior to an eruption. Also, the odds of the volcano erupting while you live next to it are very low, except if you lived near Mt. Saint Helens in the early 80’s. I think that the western US is the safest place. Places like western Colorado, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Arizona. The only things you need to worry about are occasional flash floods, and droughts, and wildfires. Places like Colorado have avalanches and rock slides but they rarely are deadly and tend to happen in non populated areas. Colorado is still close enough to Yellowstone that if it erupted the people would die from volcanic ash but I doubt it’ll happen for thousands and thousands of years.
