So when he tried to get to 3rd on that third hit he was out but because the ball landed and he got around 2nd he gets credit for a double even though he was out at 3rd, it's a confusing rule but that's the way it works. The only reason he tried for a triple was because he wanted the "cycle" which basically means he gets a single, double, triple, and a homerun all in one game. It's also incredibly rare and the fact he was that close to getting the cycle in this game would have made an incredible game a little bit better. I hope I explained this well enough, im sure more baseball savvy people can help out on anything i missed. Love the content!

Not the first game he flirted with a cycle. Last season afaik he flirted with a cycle like 2 times WHILE pitching a solid game. 1st game was against oakland and he missed the cycle by not hitting a home run while the other i think it was missed because he didnt got a double. Ironically the triple is the hardest one to get, ohtani has way more homeruns than triples though he managed to get 8 or 9 in one season which is the highest in he whole MLB that season

Something worth clarifying, Ohtani was indeed out at third trying to go for the triple, but it still counts as a hit (a double). It's a double with the runner out trying for third. The same goes for someone out at second trying to turn a single into a double. It still counts as a single but the runner pushed their luck and got out. I guess that way the batter still improves their batting average despite them trying and failing to push the envelope.

As far as the last home run. The opposing team had used up all of their pitchers for the game, so were stuck with a non-pitcher pitching. As for why they didn't intentionally walk in that situation. For one, the Dodgers are a pretty stacked team. After Ohtani are two more former MVPs. Secondly, there's much made about superstition and mojo in baseball and the manager said he felt they might get bad karma from the baseball gods for not trying to pitch to him. While he said that, I think it had more to do with the first reason.
@brandocalrissian3294
@brandocalrissian3294 Ай бұрын
Also skip Schumacher, the manager of the marlins, who also used to play for the dodgers is a real one and doesn't like walking batters. He believes you should pitch to them like a true competitor and I 100% agree with him. Plus like you said, the dodgers are stacked and have 3 mvp's for their first 3 batters and a 4th as a pitcher. Ridiculous.
@MMuraseofSandvich
@MMuraseofSandvich Ай бұрын
They only called on 3 relievers from the bullpen the entire game, so it's not like they ran out of relief pitchers. The Marlins knew they couldn't overcome a 10 run deficit in the bottom of the 9th, so they put in a position player rather than send a reliever and burn his arm. And if by some miracle the Dodger pitcher blows the lead, it's a win-win.
@blakebrown534
@blakebrown534 Ай бұрын
It was a slow throw for his last home run. Look at the score - they weren't using their good pitchers and wearing their arm out. They likely had a player who is usually a right-fielder or something who pitched in college a little bit or something like that finishing off the game. What's really nice here is that the coach of the Marlins didn't just walk Ohtani and ruin this for everyone.

your question to why the pitcher is throwing so slow, its due to the game so far out of reach. the pitcher at the time is a position player(any player that isnt a "pitcher"). instead of using a pitcher from the bullpen(back up pitchers after the starter gets tired), the team uses a position player to pitch so they can "save" the bullpens arm for the next game. usually only happens when the game is out of reach for a comeback.

To the Brits, It's impossible to hit 50 homeruns as a Dodger because they play in one of the hardest stadiums to hit homeruns in. The Dodgers, probably the greatest collection of sluggers in history next to just the Yankees and a franchise that is 140 years old, the highest homeruns ever hit was 49 until this year. How hard and easy to hit homeruns in specific stadiums are huge factors in total numbers.
