Having the 4th largest military in the world doesn't mean much when you're up against the number 1 military power in the world.
@jonadabtheunsightly8 күн бұрын
Iraq's military wasn't impressive. It may have been numerically large, by some very particular measurement, but the metric in question was not a good proxy for actual military power. Like, maybe they were counting total number of military personnel (which hasn't been the biggest important indicator of military strength since the invention of the chariot), or something along those lines. At the time, four of the top five most militarily powerful countries were in NATO, and the other one was Russia. Iraq would have been down the list, below regional-power countries like China and India and Israel and Turkey. Yes, they had a lot of missiles and a lot of tanks, but most of that was old ex-Soviet military surplus, and their people weren't even properly trained on how to use it; and their air force was trash. Iraq's military going into Desert Storm, looked highly reminiscent of Nasser's Egyptian military going into 1967. Not that that stopped their government from boasting. Weakness, in practice, never stops an Eastern power from boasting about how mighty they are. Again, just like Nasser.

Two of them per one F-111G AND they had to drop both of them at the same time because the aircraft would crash if only one was on the wing due to the flight stability thrown off due to the massive weight of the bomb.

Iraq learned the lesson of attacking someone you owe from the French. In 1307, French King Phillip the Fair (laughable name), owed the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple Solomon, aka, the Knights Templar, a lot of money. Instead of paying, they branded the Templars heretics and arrested, tortured, and executed members of the order. Thankfully, the Templars had spies everywhere and they had warning. They started fleeing Knights Commanderies all over Europe and thousands of men and hundreds of ships disappeared into history. Saddam thought he could try the same thing against Kuwait, although without the blessing of a spineless Pope.

Saddam Hussein surrendered because the A-10 aircraft destroyed all of their tanks. This plane is so horrible that when I saw it in performance while I was in the Air Force, I was SHOCKED, STUNNED, BLOWN AWAY! It is the most horrible secret the US has. This indestructible monster eats tanks for breakfast, and causes problems with our own military. The Air Force hates it because the Army wants it for support, and the Air Force doesn't want to support so they hold on to it to prevent the Army from having it. The Air Force wants this plane to go away, but its power is absolute! The Ukrainians asked for it instead of F -16s and the US Air Force REFUSED! These people in the Air Force need to be removed, this weapon is second only to the SR-71 even amoung Air Force personnel. They need to stop playing games, and deliver some real power to Ukraine! It would destroy a column of a thousand tanks. It is the only war footage still kept top secret from Desert Storm.

Before you quantitate what is considered the "largest" military you have to first qualify what contributes to the size of it. If you're talking about raw personnel on your rosters, I believe China, North Korea, and India have larger militaries than the USA by those numbers. But military strength has gone far beyond throwing bigger numbers at the problem until it submits. The US isn't the "largest" military in terms of numbers on quite a few things. It spends the most, but that doesn't determine size. Rather than just sheer numbers on paper, I think it's more or less what that military can do and how long it can do it (no innuendos in that at all.) Like Russia has a large military by the numbers. But it's proving that that same military, under the restrictions of technically "not being at war but in a special military operation," cannot over power Ukraine backed by NATO. The US has proven in the past (it doesn't speak much for the present because of how much warfare has changed) that it's able to wage war on two fronts if needed and contribute to the progression on both fronts in a substantial way. North Korea was constantly boasting that it will get a 1 million man army and now it has it, but they don't have anywhere near enough food to feed that many conscripted mandatory service members. Nor do they have the economy or logistics to give them proper training, so they just indoctrinate them to hate America and try to develop nuclear ICBMs to piss of the rest of the world. By the numbers, North Korea has a very large military. Their capacity to actually operate beyond their boarders is very small. So by the numbers, in 1990 Iraq may have had a numerically 4th largest military on the planet, but the capability of that military.....Well that kind of doesn't matter when just about every other military of varying sizes and capabilities decide they're going on the other team.

Have you ever seen any of the daily press conferences from Desert Storm? They had a lot of aerial footage of them dropping bombs and firing missiles. On one, they dropped a bomb down a smoke stack. On another you saw a truck driving across a bridge that had a missile targeted. The truck got off the bridge just as the bridge blew. The general referred to him as "the luckiest man in Iraq that day." Then there was the Iraqi Information Minister who claimed they were winning on all fronts, and they were slaughtering the invaders.
