Macy's in NYC is amazing. Macy's in smaller cities is very underwhelming. If you really searched, you could have found a few designer sections, but not like when you walk into Macy's in NYC and immediately see Chanel, Michael Kors, Louis Vitton, etc. It is truly amazing. Be sure to go there your next trip to the Big Apple. Charlotte is a lovely, up and coming southern city. It doesn't have the charm of Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA, but it is a nice city. It is growing really quickly. Looking forward to your Asheville videos. That is one of my favorite NC cities.

Macy's, like all brick and mortar department stores are struggling against virtual shopping like Amazon. In Michigan our Macy's were once J.L. Hudson's where you felt you were shopping somewhere special. The Macy's by me was a little fancier than the one you toured, but not like it used to be. As far as brands at Macy's, I am surprised Joel didn't find Polo, Ralph Lauruen, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, Alfani, Hogo Boss, etc at that Macy's.

I live in the Pittsburgh area (Pennsylvania), where Macy's is still a little upscale, but not as much as it used to be, and you can still find plenty of designer brands. We call the moving steps escalators, as well. Macy's is a legacy department store, meaning it's been in existence since 1860 ish. It's not like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave , Borgdorf Goodman which are some of the more up-market/ High end department stores in the US. The High End sister store to Macy's is Bloomingdale's , they're under the same corporate umbrella 🏖️☔. I worked at Macy's as a seasonal associate behind the men's fragrance counter over the holidays. I did enjoy working with the associates and fragrance vendor reps , actually saw them yesterday when I went to the mall. I learned a lot about men's designer fragrances and freagrances in general. My frame of references of men's and women's fragrances came from what my parents mainly wore growing up, dad, Aramis and Pierre Cardin and mom mostly Estee Lauder Youth Dew with some dibble and dabbling in Chanel No.5. Macy's backstage is basically the discount section. Macy's carries brands like Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Kate Spade, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Tori Burch, Tommy Hilfiger, Lancôme Dior, etc We call Escalators Escalators. At the Macy's store I worked at, the Fragrance counters ( there are 5 , Estee Lauder, Men's, , Women's, Chanel and Lancôme) Handbags, Fine jewelry, men's clothes tl, the shoe dept, men's accessories. And a few other departments are on the first floor, the 2nd is all women's clothing, athletic/Athleisure , Lingerie and formelal wear and the t3rd floor is homewares, furniture, travel and kids. Every Macy's footplan is different. Oh and on the second floor of the Macy's I worked at , there's also a Starbucks counter. So Macy's can be bougie but it's not maga bougie as Neiman Marcus, Saks , Bloomingdale's and other higher end department stores Discount clothing stores like Marshall's,Ross and TJ Maxx get most of their merchandise as overflow from the larger department stores The DJ was more than likely in the store in the run up to today which is Mother's day here in the States. Periodically for different holidays like Christmas, Valentine's day and mother's day, Macy's will partner with a DJ to bring a little more energy to the store in an effort to drive more money to be spent by customers.

Our mall turned into a ghost town because Macy's and the other big stores and little ones left. I can't believe you walked straight past the Clinique counter. And you never went to the sections for your age bracket. And Joel, I don't know about that one, but the men's clothing is amazing at Macy's, well not that ugly tee shirt. And stuff is popular here years before it is in England. Macy's has gone a bit down hill because of the morons that work at the head office in the main store. They make really stupid decisions. And that pink and white "skirt" would be really cute if it was cut in half and turn the other piece into a top. You should have gone to the sheet section and gotten Charter Club sheets, they are like butter. They are perfect if you have fibromyalgia. I uses to work a Macy's for 3 years.

I'm originally from Chicago and we once had a magnificent store called "Marshall Field & Company". Top notch merchandise and service and atmosphere, especially the flagship store on State Street with the mosaic dome designed by Tiffany. And it was magic at Christmas with the display windows featuring proprietary characters like Uncle Mistletoe and Aunt Holly, and the delightful "Field Mice" and their holiday adventures. As well as "Cloud Cottage" where children could go and visit Santa Claus. Then it went bankrupt, got bought by the corporation that owns Target and turned into a f-----g Macy's 😤😭😭😭😭 It's too bad you two weren't around to experience it when it was there, but if you decide to visit Chicago stop by the Macy's that it used to be. It's still "nice" especially the Walnut Room restaurant which features a magnificent two-story tree at Christmas, with a different theme every year. (Get reservations well ahead of time however, it books up fast for the season.)

I used to work at Field's. It did not go bankrupt! The store was bought by Dayton-Hudson's, the parent company of Target. They did pretty well, except that they made buying decisions from their headquarters in Minneapolis. We used to laugh at their hick taste, when we'd be stuck trying to move flannel shirts and sweatsuits in downtown Chicago. Macy's wanted to open a store in Chicago where Block 37 is located, but they expected the city of Chicago to pay them for gracing us with their presence. The mayor at the time was quite plain spoken in telling them to go to hell. After that, their psycho CEO was determined to acquire the store and eventually he did. Then he set out to destroy the brand, just as they did Dayton's in Minnesota and Hudson's in New York. So now you have the boring branch stores called Macy's all over, but none of them are as good as the flagship store in New York. Joel and Lia were actually in the bargain basement part of the store, based on the signage. They have better merch on other floors.

Macys New York was once very much the Harrods of America. But in the 80's so many other chains tried to be like Macys (some did well) and some like Nordstroms and Saks Fifth Avenue went even higher upscale. Macys had financial issues and priced themselves to the middle class with lots of sales every single week. A one point we middle class figured...I might as well buy my Hanes underwear, Rubbermaid containers, and Mattel toys at Walmart, same exact stuff as Macys, lower price. Macys lost their sparkle and have never been the same. Many of them have closed. Amazon of course has hurried their demise.

Ok a couple of notes, Macy's is more of a middle class general department store. Usually one of the better stores but not as boozy as a Nordstrom's or Neiman Marcus. That said they usually do have better lines of clothes especially for the Women. It all depends on how the store is laid out. Now if you ever get to NYC go to the main store at 34th street. That's the place you want to see and get properly lost in. Now if for some reason Joel needed a suit and he didn't bring one. Depending on the area the Men's department has salespeople and tailors on hand and can get a suit fitted and ready in a day or less if needed. I should know I used to work in one of the Main stores on the East Coast. We'd get Known rappers and politicians coming in for suits and accessories. Is it Savile Row, nope not even close. are they good looking suits? For Joel's frame that a definitive yes. Oh and the dance music was usually in one of the entrances by perfume. On the Weekends you might have a an actual DJ there to pump out the tunes and get the people up.

In 1958, Macy's and Gimbles were two NYC stores that were mid range stores that had block buster sale floors in the basement level...upper level merch could be found at bottom prices. First tier label stores would be found at Lord & Taylor's or Neiman Marcus or in specialty boutiques. Macy survived by buying out mismanaged upscale department stores across the country such as Marshall-Fields and Hudson's. For designer fashions, ladies and gents travel to larger cities to shop the season and make an event out of it...see a show...dine, etc. To warrant a full wardrobe of designer wear, one would need a lifestyle to match...any thing else can be found in nearest large city or online...online is a growing trend.

It caters to adults as it has business working attire and a nice makeup and perfume counter. They do sell clothing for all ages though. It was once pretty popular thanks to shows like Friends. Now mainly you see people buying suits and dresses in there.

Try hitting up a Von Maur. They aren’t nation wide. Only about 40 stores mostly Midwest and eastern US. Nothing past Kansas yet. It’s a family owned store more in the Nordstrom’s style. If you go at the right time you’ll be treated to piano music being played.

You said it right… Macy’s has gone downhill. They used to be amazing decades ago, but basically froze in time, cheapened and is just sort of a fish floundering in the tiniest puddle of water desperately trying to survive. But it’s dead and totally sad.

As others have said, Macy's is only super upscale in its flagship stores - mainly Herald Sq in NYC but also their store in San Francisco's Union Square. The truly upscale department stores are Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and arguably also Nordstrom (though generally only Nordstrom's at flagship malls like South Coast Plaza, SF Centre, etc)

Head to Ohio for the largest Amish population and communities in the U.S. While there, you can stay in Cleveland and check out the world-class restaurants (both Michael Symon, the last "Iron Chef" and Rocco Whalen have places there and it is their hometown) Orchestra, Art Museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cleveland has three professional sports teams(Browns-football, Cavaliers-basketball, Guardians-baseball) and is the home of several major learning colleges, including Case Western Reserve and John Carrol University. AND, if you come in the Summer, you can go to Cedar Point, an amusement park about 45 minutes west of Cleveland that features 16 different roller-coasters and it doesnt cost you an arm and a leg, like Disney. I think they just raised their tickets to $55.

I definitely think Macy’s isn’t what it used to be. If you searched a little bit you would probably be able to find some designer brands or at least ones that you might recognize, but usually you have to go to somewhere like Nordstrom to find more bougie brands. Typically, at least at the malls near me, there’s a men’s Macy’s and a women’s Macy’s but they pretty much sell the same stuff. And also we do called the moving steps escalators as well. 💓☺️🌟💜❤️

Macy's generally is underwhelming and not viewed as a destination for luxury. You'd need to hunt down a high-end mall with high-end designers (usually a Westfield) or the stand-alone boutique shops. I think Bergdorfs, Bloomingdales, and Neiman Marcus are the only department stores that actually carry luxury brands. Nordstrom carries a small amount.

Macy's is just for middle aged men or professional office workers who cannot spend $500+ on a suit. So if you needed to go for interview, Macy's would be a good place for a suit. However, Macy's is not the cheapest. JCPenny has the cheapest suits. Macy's range from $200-$500 but offer great sales of $150-$300 for a $400 to $500 suit.

Most department stores have gone downhill but the big huge Macy’s you picture in your imagination is the one on 34th Street in NYC. It takes up the whole block and is 9 floors of retail + 2 more administrative & storage floors. Nothing like venturing to the top floors where they keep the furniture (at least they did, I haven’t been in years) in the ancient rickety elevators & escalators not knowing if you’ll ever be seen again.

Sadly you missed the best two Macy's... 34th St NYC & Market St. Philly. Macy's Philadelphia formerly Wanamaker's Dept Store is an iconic early 20th century American Department Store & home of the Largest fully functional pipe organ in the world. The first time the organ was played after being installed in Philadelphia was at the exact moment of King George V's coronation on June 22, 1911.

It depends on if you're poor or middle class american. I came from a working poor thinking that it was an expensive Brand store that I could only dream of shopping in. To not being adult in the middle class finding the prices acceptable and within my means. I'm sure for the rich or bougie it's pretty much Walmart.

I live in Greensboro, NC. I used to shop at Macy's a lot. 10-15 years ago, it was nicer than it is now. Never upscale, but nicer. Dillard's is nicer and more expensive than Macy's, but also not upscale - no Gucci or Prada, etc. You'll find brands like Lauren Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Antonio Melani, Karl Lagerfeld, MICHAEL Michael Kors, etc. Will y'all be heading to the coast at all? I love our beaches in NC. The Outer Banks is probably the most popular (especially with people from out of state), but I prefer some of our other beach towns.

The dancing was so funny! Love how you describe Macy's as walking through to get to something else. I usually think of Macy's being better in New York that's the flagship store the rest are very basic especially in smaller cities. You should try Von Maur Department store they are all over the midwest & there is one in Atlanta, GA this is very upscale they have a grand piano in the center & it is usually being played you hear it all over the store. They wrap everything up. Also Nordstrom's is a more upscale Department store.
