You could use the hash brown patties. Single layer on the bottom, a little soup, a sprinkle of cheese and onion and repeat. Sort of like a hash brown lasagna. Add some US style bacon and broccoli and a dollop of sour cream on the side. And that would be a loaded hash brown casserole.
@balancedactguy17 күн бұрын

With regards to your loaded question... typically for a baked potato loaded typically means the addition of shredded cheddar, sour cream, chopped bacon, and green onions. Since you already have the cheese and white onion I suspect the loaded version would add bacon and sour cream however; many things might be added to a baked potato(jacketed potato) such as: Broccoli, cheddar, and ranch Pizza sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni Chicken, buffalo sauce, cheddar Sour cream, bacon, green onion Black beans, cheddar, BBQ sauce, green onion Chicken, cheddar, ranch Chili, cheddar, green onion Homemade Nacho Cheese Sauce, chicken, jalapeños Creamed soup Pulled pork you name it... sometimes we serve a baked potato bar which means you build your own using bowls with many options available. Hash browns are typically for breakfast but they may be substituted at any other meal in place of potatoes. I think they are nice with chicken

I highly recommend picking up something for your kitchen like the "King Cutter" crank shredder/slicer. They are stainless steel so buying them used from a restaurant liquidation store or online, is not a big deal. I picked one up for $20, and it get used more than once a week. It just greatly reduces the elbow grease in your food.
@carlaholley621818 күн бұрын
If you buy pre-shredded cheese you can rinse it in a fine sieve with cold water and it rinses the anti-caking stuff off. Then it melts just fine!

American here. I have made this recipe at least 100 times, and what makes it taste so good is the cream of chicken soup. That's actually the secret ingredient that makes it stand out from other similar recipes. Please do not substitute cream of mushroom soup. The flavor will be totally different and instead of a beautiful golden color, your casserole will be grey. I've not heard of a "loaded" version of this recipe, but I'm guessing it would be bacon. And substituting some bacon fat for melted butter would reinforce the meaty flavor. Now I want to make this casserole again.

A simple way to make any potato dish loaded is to top the finished product with sour cream and bacon bits. You can add chives or green onion for color. I would do this per serving myself, which allows for a fresher taste every serving if you plan to stretch the dish across a couple days. Looks amazing Mrs. H. Will be trying this myself sometime. Thanks Steve. Great video, thank you for sharing.

Yeah, this is pretty much the same recipe I was given as well. Instead of chopping onions, I mix in a 16oz tub of French onion dip. Also, pretty much any cream or cheese-based soup works. I've used Campbell's nacho cheese soup or (in my latest version) Old El Paso chicken enchilada soup. It is 100% a crowd pleaser and so easy to make.

This looked great! When I make hashbrown casserole, it's usually a brunch side with ham or sausages. I had loaded hashbrowns at Cracker Barrel once- I think it had red bell peppers and crumbled sausage added into the bake and a whole lot more cheese melted on the top. A baked potato has butter, salt and maybe pepper. A loaded baked potato adds cheese, bacon crumbles, green onion, sour cream. If you added bacon, sour cream and green onions, I would count that as loaded.

I'd serve baked boneless chicken thighs topped with an apricot and Dijon mustard glaze (3 parts apricot jam and 1 part Dijon add at the last 5 minutes while cooking the chicken). Also, some green beans and or corn plus and a nice side salad. Serve a bottle of a red (either a cab or merlot) wine since the glaze has kind of a strong flavored. I'd also add some bacon bits to the hash browns, and I would add some bell pepper, but I would lightly sauté them with the onions before adding them to the dish.

Prepackaged shredded cheese has either added potato starch or powdered cellulose (which is basically plant fiber). The purpose is to keep the cheese from clumping or "caking" together, which you can see happening with your home shredded cheese. It can affect the texture sometimes,, but I haven't had too many problems with meltability. I do usually prefer shredding my own cheese. However, sometimes time is tight, so the pre shredded cheese can be useful in those situations. Mostly melting cheese successfully into sauces has to do with the heat. Going hotter is usually not recommended when it comes to melting cheese into a sauce! It can cause the cheese to "break."

That looks good! I'm going to have to make that! The "loaded" version, I am assuming it's made with bacon (The type of bacon we have here in the US, I believe you call it "streaky bacon") . If that's the case, put a whole pack (or maybe two) in the freezer until it's firm, then you can chop it up into tiny pieces easier without it getting all slippery then cook it until it's just crispy. drain from the grease, and let it rest on a paper towel to absorb the rest of the grease. Add three-quarters of the chopped bacon to the casserole mixture and bake in the oven. When you're ready to serve, top it with the remaining bacon, sour cream, chopped tomato, and chopped scallion onions (I think you call it spring onion in the UK), and enjoy.

Normally Americans would have some kind of simple meat and veggies of choice with something like this. Easy things like meat loaf, rotisserie chicken, seasoned beef patties or pork chops. A homemade version of Shake and Bake pork chops(seasoned breaded pork chops baked in the same hot oven) might be good, or just fried.Dry onion soup beef patties would also work(2lbs ground beef to a package of dry French Onion Soup) though I don't know if you have that kitchen staple there.

My understanding is that Cracker Barrel was created originally for truckers who were driving long distance and were missing home cooked meals. So they put restaurants near the highways so the truckers could eat home cooking. It evolved from there. I am an American Midwesterner and I grew up with this type of cooking and miss it so occasionally I would pop in to get turnip greens and catfish. I have one close by.

When starting with fresh potatoes, you tend to get better texture by at least partly cooking the potatoes before you shred them. either bake or boil them. Then you can shred them and cook again or freeze them without the browning,(oxidization of the excess starch). This process helps when making just plain hash browns so that the outside can crisp up while the inside finishes cooking giving you the crispy outside and nice tender, but fully cooked inside.

We call that potato hash vs hash brown in the south. Weird but their is a distinction lol
@stephanieblackburn27789 күн бұрын
@idkjames that's fried on the stove top we make it the same exact way in a casserole dish with the cream of mushroom soup and we do 25 slices of craft deluxe american cheese cut up into chunks and on the top we crush cornflakes and cover the top with it melt a stick of butter and pour over the top and bake it. Cracker barrel was the first time I'd ever seen it shredded potatoes and no onions and peppers I also put 3 cloves of garlic diced. It's been passed down in my family for decades lol

This is an awesome dish. I prefer it with breakfast. Eggs, Bacon, sausage or whatever your breakfast fancy is. However, the best way to eat it is the way you like it!

Since I make it for a breakfast, I usually do Julia Child's version of scrambled eggs that she calls "eggs the right way ". Her scrambled eggs are more like a porridge. Or you could do ham, which always goes well with a cheesy potato side dish

I would fix, hamburger patties, meatloaf, salmon patties, pork chops, pork steak. That casserole is very versatile and would go with most any kind of meats.

Stuff is sooo good lol I cannot tell you enough times lol.. I only have it about once a year, there's so many restaurants here in Clearwater that you really don't get to those places often because you will be too busy going elsewhere lol.

When we make this, we crush a bunch of Ritz crackers, toss them with melted butter, and spread them across the top of the casserole.

I would add browned ground sausage. We make it for a breakfast casserole.

My favorite is to have that with either ham or more breakfast foods like bacon and eggs
