I think tipping is better. You get the level of performance that you pay for. Oftentimes on a very busy night in america, it's best to start out by laying a big tip on the table and letting the waiter or waitress know, that is currently your tip, poor service will make money get subtracted from that total

The service in America would still be very good even without tips. There are many, many industries where employees aren’t paid through tips and the customer service is still top notch. Retail comes to mind. America is just big on customer service in general and the “customer is always right” mentality.

You are correct, Kat. When I started working at Lowes---part of our training is HOURS of computer training videos--most of them to teach us good customer service. This is HEAVILY emphasized--excellent customer service is extremely important with them...and we have to do refresher courses often on "SMART" customer service. (That's their acronym for it) And the thing is--it actually comes easy because once you engage the customer--you find that most people are open and friendly, and you develop a good rapport.

I worked with a Canadian who lived near the border with the USA. Whenever he and his wife had an important dinner (anniversary, St. Valentines Day, or whatever) they would drive across the border to eat at a restaurant in the USA. Yes, they needed to tip (Canada was definitely more like the UK about tipping at the time) but he could be assured they would get great service and if there were any problems the manager would fix them. Even with tipping, the USA restaurants were usually still less expensive than the equivalents in Canada. You were recently in Canada so should have some perspective on that.

When in America, chose diners or meat and three restaurants based on recommendations from locals and the number of cars in the parking lot. The last time the hubby and I were in Texas, we asked locals to recommend restaurants and we only ate at those establishments. The locals were spot on. Knowing our Texas friend likes donuts, we wanted to take him a dozen. I asked a local which donuts are the best. I can’t remember the name of the donut shop, but we pick up a dozen and headed to our friend’s house. He was delighted to get the donuts, and he was amazed that we bought the best in Texas.

Back in the day when the Soviet Union was a thing, they sent their National Hockey team to the US for a tour along with dozens of KGB to make sure they didn't stray. This was a big deal as it was a first. Near the end of their tour the Soviet team and entourage was asked what was their favorite restaurant while in the US. Denny's won by a landslide much to the horror of the US snooty media. Why did they pick Denny's? It was because they could order by using the food pictures in the menu.

That's an awesome story, thanks Bob. Personally, as an American in Qatar, shopping by picture is a huge thing. I have friends who worked in all sorts of retail and service jobs where they wore name badges, BUT there was a collection of random name badges so the customers would not know their real names. They did have to keep track of the name on the badge they were wearing. Some places also let the employees simply wear badges with a name other than their own but their choice. The fake name thing was more important for female staff.

Yeah, guys. Feel free to ask for anything. Stateside, they WORK for tips. If you want more milk / creamers. Tea or soda to go. Ask and you'll probably get it. Ask for take out (to-go) boxes for anything you want to finish later, everyone does it. As for service, at very expensive restaurants, your tip % is higher, therefore your asks / requests can be higher. Don't be embarrassed, the worst thing is they say no.

So weird of me to say this, but I miss Denny's. I live _in_ Orlando, but as my sister says, we're so spread out that "Orlando, is an hour from Orlando". (Which, if you look at the actual city limits of Orlando, is literally true.) And I live in north Orlando now, and have for years, and almost all the Denny's in town are nowhere near me, except for one that's kind of inconvenient by bus, which is why I only would visit it when my dad visited. I need to spread out a little more. (There IS a place called Nick's Family Diner nearby to my house, I'm annoyed with myself that I haven't gone yet.)

And Joel was right, you can always ask for more cream or whatever you want, no questions asked. As well, if you asked for some beans on you hash browns, if possible, which it probably is, they'd be glad to do it, for not much more money. Joel, you can always ask for bacon, or anything, extra crispy, or scrambled eggs, gentle. Cheese on scrambled, butter on pancakes, ah, it is the land of plenty. Fun vid, onward.

dobie bloke I am glad you pointed out Lia's eggs on her Eggs Benedict. I wonder how common it is for people to specify the kind of eggs they want on their Eggs Benedict? That's never crossed my mind. LOL! It surprised me that Lia's eggs we greasy, but my first thought was I've never asked for the Hollandaise sauce on the side. You're right though, the eggs are usually poached! I wonder if Lia requested her eggs over easy? Now I'm wondering what other winning combinations I have been missing out on trying! 😋🤣

You two make eating at Denny’s and shopping at Walmart in Florida a lot of fun. So enjoyable watching. I am now wanting to go on vacation to the Sunshine State, and I will be sure to stop at Walmart and Denny’s. You both make me proud of what the USA has to offer and what most people take for granite. Keep on touring America. Love it.👍

The thing about service in America is that people really want to do a good job and please the customer. Of course they need the tips, but despite what you may think, they're not thinking about them constantly. By the way, the hash browns are held together by the starch of the russet potatoes.

Denny's is alright, holds a special place in my heart. As a kid we went to the state capitol Springfield, Il for vacation. Denny's was the only thing in our area open, so we ate there for breakfast 3 days in a row. Not the biggest "breakfast" person, so I got their pizza each time. It was fine in a nostalgic guilty pleasure way. I don't think I've ever been back, IHOP is the big breakfast chain around here, everything else is either legit fast food, family places, or sit down fast food that happens to have breakfast hours/items. Wonder how it would hold up?

I’m glad that you guys enjoyed yourselves! I personally would have asked for a different table, as I don’t like having a restaurant kitchen’s view or being near their bustle while I eat. Unless it’s an open kitchen concept, of course. ☺️

Sweet video. Denny's is middle of the road diner food because its's a chain restaurant. But it's a brick wall in the middle of the road. The service is good. The food is good after being out all night. It get's crowded there, but that's a good thing. Jump off the beaten path and you will find really good stick-to-your-ribs food. Eat your hearts out. Dieting on vacation is like watching a R-rated movie with your hands over your eyes. Oops I forgot. Joel. Just ask them to cook the bacon more or less to your liking. Enjoy.

What I found a bit confusing in restaurants in the UK is that there often wasn't a singular person who was assigned to wait on us. It sometimes seemed like we never saw the same person twice. So the usual thing where you're waiting to spot your particular waiter to ask for more tea or the dessert menu or the bill did not apply. You might as well just ask whoever the next person walking past. Which also made it harder to figure out a tip because who knew who it would go to?

I looked up the prices now and cannot get over the prices. They do offer an age discount still for 55+ And I noticed they do have a family breakfast to order. In old school Florida breakfast diners kids ate for free. Dennys were pretty reliable for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Ihops also good dinners

Have you guys had the change to go to a Breakfast Buffet? Those are amazing if you can find a good one. "The Coke is flat." As a former restaurant server I would respond with a big "thank you!" Same goes with it being watery if the syrup is out. There is nothing worse than the Co2 in the soda machine being out or it just being flavorless. We would fix it right away.
