That poor child is going to grow up unable to eat unless there is a camera around!! 🤣🤣 For another combination that you wouldn't expect to work, if you have any American peanut butter, try a sandwich combination of, instead of peanut butter and jelly, peanut butter and mayonnaise! I know it sounds weird, but the contrast works, trust me.

I have had this made 100 different ways. I am not normally a fan of Orange Marmalade but it's it better with Orange Marmalade instead of mayo. Swiss cheese is definitely best. The best one I ever ate in my life was made with orange marmalade and swiss cheese. It was heavenly and like I said I normally hate orange marmalade.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not a Monti Cristo without powdered sugar and raspberry jam. The ones I've had were dipped in the egg wash on the sides too. They may have even used a deep fryer to get all the side of it done. It's an awesome sandwich.

What? You never had a grilled cheese sandwich? Now that is an American staple food. Grilled cheese dipped in tomato soup. 2 slices of bread buttered on the back side. 2 slices of American cheese. Mild cheddar if you can't find American. Instead of water, we use milk in the tomato soup. Grilled cheese got its name in a Diner because that's what they call their griddle that can make 10 fried foods at once.

I’m more familiar with the recipe used by famous places like Bennigan’s Tavern or Disney parks, where it’s dipped in something more like a pancake batter than a French toast batter. Then it’s fried in oil (either deep fried, or shallow fried in a skillet). Yes, usually with a bit of powdered sugar, and a little side of jam.

I think what she was saying was they don't call it "grilled cheese" in England. The terminology is different. I believe the Brits call it a "toasted cheese" sandwich. Which is the same thing. But, yeah, the tomato soup is an American thing. I've seen other British videos that tried dipping them in tomato soup but they didn't have Campbells, which is essential! I grew up in Northern Illinois and never heard of dipping them in tomato soup until I moved to Arkansas 14 years ago when I was 37. It's a staple here in the south.

I love Monte Cristo's. There are a few different ways to make them. Most are made with French toast but I have seen them made when they dip the whole entire sandwich in a batter and deep fry it, and then sprinkle on some powdered sugar and cinnamon. I like my Monte Cristo sandwich with sugar and cinnamon sprinkled on top. Another good sandwich is a grilled ham and swiss cheese and bacon on sourdough bread dipped in blue cheese or ranch dressing. Also a hot brown from Kentucky. ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻✌🏻

I know that in Southern California you can usually find this on the menu at coffee shops and breakfast restaurants. This is one of my favorite breakfast items because I'm not a breakfast person, I'm a lunch person and this seems to bridge the gap! Usually, they don't cut the crust and I've never seen mayo or mustard on one, but that doesn't mean you can't do that. That said, they usually sprinkle powdered sugar on top and serve with either maple syrup or raspberry jam - I like the jam the best. I spread it on each bite, dipping can get messy with this dish. I bet it would be good to spread the jam on the bread, instead of mustard/mayo, before when you make it and then have jam on the side too. Yum! I think this is one of those items you can add your own twist on. Yours looks great!

Greetings from Acworth, Georgia. When we made ours on Saturdays and Sundays at the restaurant, we did the eggs, milk and a tad of vanilla. White bread or Texas toast. On one side, strawberry jam.The other side dijon mustard. Ham on the mustard side, turkey on the jam side, two slices of swiss cheese in the middle. Dunk the sandwich. Griddle. Dust with powdered sugar. Don't buy powdered sugar, put white sugar into a blender and give it a long rip. I'd love to fly across the pond and cook American food for the family.

On holidays, i make a breakfast sandwich that is in this light. I make french toast (white bread quickly dipped in beaten egg, on both sides, then butter fried in a skillet). Then you add a cooked ground pork sausage patty (roughly the diameter of a hamburger patty, but not quite as thick), and a one egg omelette (cooked in a 7ish inch pan) folded in half, and then in half again. So you have one piece of french toast, one sausage patty, and a one egg omelette folded twice. Add a slice of velveeta or american cheese and put the other slice of french toast on top. Smash it down, cut it in half or quarters, and dip it in maple syrup (you can put grape or strawberry jelly on it instead, but the maple syrup is the ticket). It will change your life for the better.

I worked kitchen for years. Strawberry jam was almost always included with a Monet Cristo. Some places added the turkey , others didn't.

I've had Monte Cristos in Florida and Massachusetts. In both cases, only 2 slices of thick sliced bread were used. Both were batter dipped then deep fried until brown and crispy. The one in Florida was served with a raspberry sauce drizzled over top and was eaten with a fork and knife. In Massachusetts, it was served as a sandwich with raspberry sauce on the side for dipping. Both were excellent. I like Mrs. H.'s version in the skillet.. no batter and easier to cook in butter in a pan on the stove top. Besides, everything tastes better with butter, right? Will definitely give this one a go!

It has gone from below 0 degrees (F) to 60 degrees in the span of a few days. West Tennessee...the weather has been weird!

The on;y Monte Cristo I've ever had was a double -decker ham/turkey/swiss cheese sandwich cut in halves , dipped in a proper batter (beaten eggs, milk, and flour) then deep fried. The powdered sugar gets sprinkled on right after it's fried so some of it melts into the fried batter from the residual heat and it gets served with a bowl of raspberry jam and some fries. It's sinfully good.

Never had one of those! It looks delicious! I think any restaurant that served them would be jealous of the sandwich you made. It looks that good!

One of my Mom's favorite sandwiches so this sandwich always reminds me of her. the first time I had it was at the blue bayou restaurant in Disneyland. Disney does not add mustard but most folks I know who like the mustard use Dijon. Some folks sub bacon for ham as they prefer. Traditional is ham. It always comes with jam and powdered sugar. For me it is a bit greasy so you need to eat while it is hot As for the weather... it is wintery here in northern California, USA. It has been pretty rainy for the last couple of weeks. Today I see sunshine through the window this afternoon.

I haven’t had a Monte Cristo in years. When I did eat it I had it with powdered sugar but no jam. I personally like making a grilled cheese sandwich and sometimes either put Cajun turkey or ham on it.

One of my all time favorite sandwiches!!!! It works best if you deep fry them and batter the entire sandwich that way it gets crispy all over.

If any of you live in the Anaheim California area, you might remember a restaurant called Belisle's? That is where I had my first Monty Christo and they put the raspberry jam inside the sandwich. They also made the sandwich as big as your head too. It was what Claim Jumper restaurants wanted to be when Claim Jumper finally grew up. LOL

Foggy! "The fog is so thick you can cut it with a knife" and "The fog is thick as pea soup." are the 2 idioms that would describe it. Then there's the rain... hey, did I make a wrong turn and end up in London? LOL! :) Yours is a little different than mine. We don't use powdered sugar and jam at all, we keep it savory. Yes: regular mustard, turkey, 3rd slice of bread. We also add bacon. We don't use as much butter in the pan. We only use as much as you would need to make "French toast". Glad Little H liked the sandwich and Mom H was able to let her experience the foodie blog portion as well. Who needs powdered sugar when you have the Elana sweetness!? Kudos.

Powdered sugar on top, cut diagonally, drizzle maple syrup on top and eat with knife and fork. You could also pick it up with your hands and dip a corner into a cup/small bowl of maple syrup and eat it.

I have had it in pancake batter from a restaurant with a light covering of powdered sugar and a berry dipping sauce on the side. it is Yummy, but rich, so I don't order it often. The restaurant is called Cheddars. Melissa Faith from Liberty, Kentucky.

So, dust it with the icing sugar BUT dip it or put a smear of raspberry jam on each bite. That tang from the mustard and the sweet from the sugar and jam are amazing!

I always thought a Monte Cristo was just ham. Didn't know you could make it with ham and turkey. Not a huge fan of ham but I think the combination of the two would be worth trying. Mrs. H has no fear of trying new foods made from scratch. I'll say that much.😅 I will admit I had a little chuckle over the rustic cheese.

The way they did it in my area of Ohio was instead of an egg wash they actually dipped it in batter (like pancake batter) then deep fried it, sprinkled the powdered sugar and dipped in the raspberry preserves. Please keep up the great videos and God Bless the family.
