Thanks for this information Brittany. I am not a jeweler but I build models of 18th and 19th century sailing vessels. We modelers of course need to treat and age the shiny brass, copper and Britannia fittings that we use. Similar products aimed at the hobby industry are limited in applications and are expensive. This stuff is genius! I just purchased a pint each of the black and green using your links below and hope you get a few cents out of it. I’m about to build a copper bottomed vessel (a couple’ a thousand plates) and am looking forward to experimenting with some test pieces to get the right “salty” look. Thank you for a fun video. I love the science of metal patina. As you mention, metal prep is THE critical step. You can degrease metal with a soak in acetone nail polish remover or a mild acid, like vinegar. You can even use ketchup (a readily available acidic gel) with a toothbrush, followed by Dawn, or similar, dish soap. If you cover the wet patina-ed items loosely with plastic wrap, (or put the items on moist paper towel inside a vented Tupperware) it will help stop the patina mixture from drying out and then you don't have to be as liberal with the application. Also, when doing beads, you can hook them on a bit of wire and hang them on a rod and do both sides at once. Also, thank you for the warning reminder. These are chemicals and everyone should read the MSDS on PPE, use, mixing and disposal. I have not used Jax. Instead, I use liver of sulfer (LOS) which is a really under-rated patina, bc a lot of people think it is hard to use. Most people think of it only to darken silver. But you can add acid (vinegar) or base (ammonia) or other liquids (recipes are online) to get different colors on copper-containing metals (including, brass and bronze). I can get blues, greens, chestnut brown, orangey rust, gunmetal grey and dark/black, just by varying the amount of LOS, temperature, pH and organic compounds in the mix. The easiest and most stable LOS I have used is the gel LOS from Cool Tools. Lump LOS is super stinky and very annoying to use IMO.

Thank you for showing this product, Brittany. I haven't used JAX yet but planned to get some to try. Now I'm all kinds of curious and wonder what kind of finish would be achieved if I masked up and hit the patina with my Dremel sanding and polishing wheels. Not too much...just a tiny bit here and there. -- I see Goldie naps on her back like my pup does only he weighs 80 pounds so instead of looking cute...he looks sorta awkward.

What a great video and very informative. I really enjoyed watching you experiment, it really is a process. I bought some Vintaj patinas (about 9-10 colors along with the gloss) last year and have yet to try them but I will soon after researching a bit more. You make it look so easy and I really loved the black with turquoise. I have some black Onyx Vintaj and will have to try something with that first. Hi, Brittany! As others have said, this is a very educational video & I enjoyed learning about it a lot, especially the part about getting better results by using the black first. I've actually had some of the green in my "saved for later" items on Etsy for awhile...but I'm glad I watched this, before "pulling the trigger" on the purchase. I do have a question for you, if you happen to see this: You mentioned that it has some odor...could you estimate (on a scale of 1 to 10) how much? I only ask, because I have an extreme sensitivity to some chemical scents...even too much of certain perfumes on someone will really sicken me...which is why I have absolutely NO interest in ever using LOS or ammonia on anything. Hi how do I get rid of the bronze after I added the black on the letterings. The lettering has the black however the outside has bronze , what can I use to remove it?

Do you think you'd get better results on straight metal [sans blackening] if you submerge the pieces rather than paint or dab on? I love patina painting with Vintaj Colors - but it can get time consuming doing multiple coats, wiping off, doing over etc, especially when you're trying to create several pieces that color match for a set of jewelry... I'd love something easy - dip, cleanse, wipe and be done with it, LOL

@@ssiegreen5292 good question! There might be a product out there but that wouldn’t work with the JAX green patina. They say not to dip, and to paint a layer on so it can form a film. There are tons of things out there and I’m on a mission to test them all 🤣
