The piece Six Metamorphoses after Ovid was dedicated to the oboist Joy Boughton. Britten gained his inspiration from a series of mythical figures portrayed in the Roman poet’s epic poem. The work explores some of the facets of the personality of each of them and, to this end, the six movements are preceded by short summaries of their stories in the score. This collection of musical sketches shows the versatility of the oboe, which describes Pan’s freely played reed pipe, the frenetic Phaeton, the distressed Niobe, the rebel Bacchus, the mutable Narcissus and Arethusa’s gentle aquatic flow.
