When I worked as a camera op in sports, the director will have a camera meeting and he'll tell us our camera number and what he wants from that camera. He looks at me and says, "And you just do what you do". I had the greatest sense of pride. I say this because when Shane talked about the role of the B camera, you have to direct yourself by use of anticipation, preparedness and instincts. It was cool hearing the same advice I try to give my young co-workers. Good video!

As a camera operator I’m always trying to find ways to be the best! Everyone thinks they can cam op because they just think it’s shooting but it’s so much more to it! You should def wear that with pride! I always want to be a camera op that can make the DPs life easier. Where I can bring my creative mind to help them and do my best! So that’s pretty dope!

For first collabo, yes, very necessary. But with some room to be creative On Your own. The problem is when you are given no room. As you work together across projects, you get to understand each other and trust builds, therefore less intervention on what you have to do. This can hardly happen during the first Collab.

Thanks for sharing useful information. As someone that has never worked on set I always imagined that the camera operator was mostly following what the director told them to do.
@BrittneyJanae27 күн бұрын
Oh, they do! It’s all about collaboration, and a good operator knows when to be creative and when to follow directions. But as a camera operator you don't want to only move or figure things out when the DP tells you. I want to see your eye, I want to see your creativity and how you move. It's really findind that balance. You still are under the DP but in order to separate yourself and better yourself, the more proactive you are the better!

Great video! But I'm honestly confused. What he described as A camera op is what sounds like the role of a director of Photography and he even mentions director of Photography. Is camera operator A generally the director of Photography as well? Thanks
@BrittneyJanae29 күн бұрын
What I’ve learned being both is as a camera op you have to think like a director of photography. You are the eyes for the director. So being able to find good composition, being able to talk with talent to get the shots you need, etc
@chupap128 күн бұрын
As newer DP's emerge who haven't come up through the ranks, i.e. started out as DP's, they may not have a grasp of what a strong camera operator can do for them as they are often used to doing it all themselves. As Shane points out, there is plenty on the DP's plate to cover between lighting, scheduling, prepping for upcoming days, working with the gaffer and key grip on the lighting etc. so having your A camera operator manage the nuances of camera placement and usage is an efficient use of time. I used to operate for Shane way back and had a lot of input into the shot design and coverage.
@BrittneyJanae28 күн бұрын
@@chupap1 Love this and thank you! You're right people really don't understand how important it is to find great camera operators. It's not just you operating the camera but it's so much more than that so I'm glad that Shane answered in the way he did!

Cool. However, camera operators are going to have different heights. And the actors and scene layout will be unique from scene to scene. There must be those times when a handheld camera shot is needed, and a taller or shorter operator would be better suited.
@BrittneyJanae28 күн бұрын
Yes I don’t think he said anything about needing short or tall moreso the skill level.
@quite1enough28 күн бұрын
I wonder how he would find a common ground with people that works like Tarkovsky who was usually handguiding cinematographer to the point of taking their sit, which afaik left Sven Nykvist in some shock lol (or/and Herzog, who don't shoot coverage)
@BrittneyJanae27 күн бұрын
He probably wouldn't have liked it lol. Shane is very hands-on, definitely a, if you don't do it Ill do it myself type of DP but he also makes space for others to do their thing. Like he said it's a nice balance. But he tries to let othersdo them before he just dives in.
@robertpaterson547724 күн бұрын
Spielberg operates a lot himself. He designs his shots. Kaminski is in charge of the lighting. Is Shane saying that he and the operator design the shots?

From my experience the Director job is way more personal. If you go on a set, you probably see the AD asking the DP more of the time left, camera set, lighting, etc etc than the Director. The Director drives but in a different way.

Do you know what a good camera op is? Someone who doesn't think they're the most important person on the set. Someone who respects the production more than themself. Someone who respects the artistry of Oscar-winning actors and doesn't act like a little bitch by disrespecting them. A good crew member doesn't ruin the reputation of professionals 20X more talented than them because of their precious little feelings.
