This is my favorite song by Alanis. This was the first song she released following the mind-blowing success of her album Jagged Little Pill (6 hit singles, 5 Grammys, youngest artist to go diamond, etc). I can’t imagine what kind of pressure she must’ve felt to follow up that album but she killed it. This song is a masterpiece.

This is the reaction I’ve been waiting for since I saw you find Alanis! She is most definitely Canadian and, from what I understand, a national treasure. So happy you did this particular performance. The power in her voice is chilling. Love the confidence to belt out this banger of a song in front of a full orchestra knowing they wouldn’t drown her out. Who but Alanis could do it? When you described it as “what’s around the corner” I immediately knew what you meant lol because it’s difficult to put into words what she does with her voice. Thanks, again. Your reaction did not disappoint.

She is from Ottawa Ontario Canada. Ottawa is the Capital City of Canada. I am the same age as her and back in the day she was a teen pop singer. I still own her first two teen pop CD's. She sings this song about listening to Rod Stewart in rain . . . great song. That teenage nonsense was hushed up when she released the album Jagged Little Pill. Her voice and her music, rightly, and deservedly so, shot in to the stratosphere. Back in the 90's she did something that only a dreamer could dream of. She has been called "The voice of a generation." She does deserve that title. A little girl from Ottawa Ontario Canada. You don't get far on dreams alone. You get that far by working your and spilling her guts out. There is a long history of Canadian recording artists doing that. She made the biggest and loudest bang ever.

You know, being a teenager when she burst on the scene, she kind of was 'just another good singer' in a sea of great 90s bands and singers. It isn't until a few decades later that I realize just how amazing her uniqueness, songwriting, and voice really was. I liked her music and can sing a lot of her songs, but I feel like I missed out by not paying a little more attention to her at the time. Also, I accidentally say "Canadia" too sometimes. 😂

Alanis is from Canada, but when she sings her voice sounds has an Irish accent and overtone. Simply beautiful. This musical arrangement has certain segments & rhythms with the guitars and violins, that are similar to Led Zepplin's, 'Kashmir,' and 'All of my love.' Britt your hair is popping!!!

Your analysis of Alanis's voice, music and lyrics is the closest I've ever heard to be able to put into words how her songs made those of us feel who grew up with relationship angst in the '90s. Her "Jagged Little Pill" was probably the fastest CD purchase I ever made. Britt, you rock-and every other musical genre as well! 🌟

Alanis Morissette was born in the Capitol of Canada, Ottawa, where English and French are the official languages. She lived in Germany from 3 to 6 years old, that could be a source for playing with pronunciation. She had a few pop hits up North as a teen then "Jagged Little Pill" set the World on 🔥. On the topic of accents, I sum it up like this... What is the difference between a New Yawker and a Canadian? New Yawker : "Eh, Get outta the way!" Canadian : "Get outta the way, eh!" How do you spell Canada? C, eh, N, eh, D, eh. RUSH!!! 🤘 &

One of my favorite things about Alanis is how she can take one word and make three lines out of it, lol. She's also a very talented songwriter - I recommend 'That I Would Be Good', 'Simple Together', 'Unsent', 'Sympathetic Character', and 'Hands Clean'. Regarding her unique sound, the only other vocalists that I could compare Alanis to would be Aurora and Allison Krauss for that ethereal, other-worldly quality.

A friend of mine is in a band that was the headliner for our Canada Day celebration about ten years ago. He performed his very alt-rock tunes with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra filling out his group. It was one of the many highlights of his career! So yes, I can only guess that Alanis was more than likely stoked to hear her song played by an orchestra!

Alanis is defo Canadian. She is from Ottawa, Ontario Canada... and it's a bilingual city. So you may indeed be hearing her accent come out in her vocals. So here are three other Canadians... that you need to hear ... for their killer distinct vocals!!!! 🤩 Amanda Marshall.... Let It Rain.. and Believe In You .. Beautiful Goodbye.. and If I Didn't Have You.... just to get you started. She's making a come back this year.. after many years of not recording. Next is Belgian Canadian Lara Fabian.... and three to start with are Caruso... Je Suis Malade.. with the English translation on the vid... then Adagio.... also I Will Love Again... this woman will blow the socks right off your feet... I kid you not!!!! Then there is Faouzia... she's Moroccan Canadian.. and well she's unreal!!!! Start with her stripped versions of these songs... You Don't Even Know Me ... then Tears Of Gold... This Mountain (Acoustic) and then Exothermic (Piano) version!! She has sooooo many more.. but that will get you hooked on her!!! 😍 I swear by these artists and promise you ... that you will love them!!!

I hope that this made it into your playlist, so that you've had a chance to revisit it without the starts and stops, to really feel how it builds, and backs off, and builds again. There's something almost *uncomfortable* in how angsty the orchestra feels in this song, but that's what makes it great. Some of us are lucky enough to have been loving this song ever since it first came out, and it hasn't diminished one bit in that time; it's as unique and hard-hitting as it ever was, and that's immensely impressive. I hope you have the day you deserve, Miss Britt!

I worked at a radio station when this song dropped. It was so popular we played it at the top AND bottom of every hour for two weeks. That's crazy, and I've heard not one other song has ever had that type of play time during its rise and time at #1 Also: the whole accent comment... it's the way she breaks up the words she sings. I guess the way she enunciates each word.

This song was a part of the movie, "city of angels", which I watched with my former girlfriend. As she sings in this song, I found Alanis to be intriguing . Maybe even a little alluring. My musical tastes have a broad range and my son cannot understand how I can be drawn to her music at the age of 65 and having grown up in a traditional country/gospel music family.

Of course I could be wrong, but I don’t know that the movie ”City of Angels” made much of a splash - (I haven’t even seen it myself). But it does feature two absolutely majestic songs that were written specifically for it: ”Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls and this one. If nothing else they struck gold in the music department. This song is like a beautiful lament over a romantic/erotic interest being forbidden fruit, either because the counterpart is already in a relationship, or because Alanis is - or both. I feel she captured that mix of frustration, curiosity, ennui and discomfort perfectly, all while the musical crescendoes illustrate the stirring attraction boiling underneath.

Britt, you have to go watch her perform this song live in concert!! It's amazing!!! They turn on a strobe light and she does a crazy headbang dance!! Originally it was meant to be about Meg Ryan's character in City of Angels resisting the romantic feelings of an angel.....but in the play about her music, "Jagged Little Pill", a musical play that you can go watch right now too, they make this song about someone overdosing on drugs. It's really powerful there too. But yeah you gotta watch her perform this live. 🙂
