Absolutely loved Mr Pinette. His Chinese buffet stories still make me laugh. Gluten allergies have been around forever, I was taught how to cook to avoid it. I was raised with Italians but couldn't eat pasta. Beer was off limits, so I just did not partake in alcohol. I am the ultimate designated driver. I didn't complain. I adjusted. Then, in the early 2000s, the younger generations boo-hooed about their food struggles (and so many other things), and gluten-free was everywhere and double the price.

My brother and I grew up on a large lot that backed up to a creek. Every winter when that creek froze we were out there with our skates. We spent the whole day skating. We skated behind an older church that my dad bought. We had the key and there was a gas heater in the back. So we would skate as long as we could and come in and get warm. Great fun.

I'm from Ottawa. We have a canal that flows through a part of the downtown core of the city. They drain it in the fall a little. And yes, it freezes over and we skate on it. The water is not that deep, so nothing to be scared of. Beavertails are sugary deliciousness that is to die for. trust me. lol.

I was hoping he was going to say, "beaver tails!" when he asked, "Do you know what has gluten?" I would have died!!! Although "Everything!" was a good one too.🤣🤣🤣 But, I swear my sister must have been one of the first people diagnosed with Celiac disease (gluten allergy) back in '73 when she was 4yrs old. No one had heard of it before. And can you imagine how hard it was to prepare gluten free meals? My sister didn't have birthday cakes, she had birthday trays of rice krispy treats. I remember waking up in the middle of the night and finding her in the kitchen raiding the bread drawer. I never told on her because I felt bad for her and her cravings for grain flour products. And she would pay Holy Hell the next day with the reactions from it. She loves to bake and one of her first jobs was at Pizza Hut. I don't know how she survived it. At first it would just affect her stomach and mood. But in her older age she has had tracheal swelling and if she even has gluten contained flour get on her skin she swells and rashes. She still bakes but wears a mask and gloves while doing it and showers right after. She carries an EPIPEN with her all the time.

The "river" he is talking about is the Rideau (Ree Dough) Canal. The Canal is drained to about 1ft of water in winter and they freeze that. So even if it breaks (which they dont let you skate on when the ice isnt safe) you would be only in mid shin water

The "river" he is talking about is the Rideau Canal. And they lower it in the winter, so you are skating on maybe a couple of feet of water and it is about 26 feet wide. There is a whole crew of people who care for and maintain the ice. The ice has to be a foot thick before they let skaters on. This particular body of water is about as safe as you get for skating.

Just don't eat them all the time, a once in the while treat. Edit: And yes this gluten thing came out of nowhere and is indeed modern day thing. From kid to early adult gluten allergies where unheard of for me, the same goes for peanut and nut allergies. There where no kids in school with peanut allergies when I went to school.
