She's always like that. She makes music with her whole body and the piano is also her body. There's so much to enjoy from her! Winter is a wistful song but you caught the ferocity under it... She also has songs that are anger distilled through a piano or harpsichord. Very cathartic. Lots of grief and anger in her work. Lots of very human experiences made into art. She's a force all her own. Once in a while an artist comes along who feels almost otherworldly - like there was no chance they wouldn't create this art, the only question is whether anyone would notice. That's Tori.

In November of 1992 I saw Tori Amos perform her masterpiece brilliant debut album "Little Earthquakes" at a tiny 200-seat auditorium on Marquette University's campus. I snagged an alumni ticket and was immediately both mesmerized and blown away by Tori's passion and talent. I'm convinced, to this day, that there's a hole in that stage floor where she relentlessly pounded her heel to keep time and beat. I have seen her 11 more times since, here in Milwaukee and she remains my favorite female artist of all time. She is remarkable!

@@jzeke1712 YES!!! I graduated in 1988 (as a Warrior!) and in 1987 we had Tracy Chapman open for 10,000 Maniacs. What a show that was! Then in September of 1991, I scored some alumni tickets to see Crowded House play on campus. Back then Marquette was really into student sponsored concerts. Fun times!

Born Myra Ellen Amos, changed to Tori later, crawled up to a piano at the age of 2 and just started playing, by 3 she was able to duplicate songs she'd only heard once, by 4 composing her own music, and at age 5 she was the youngest person to this day to get a scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Tori was also kicked out of that program at age 11 for what she called musical insubordination, she refused to learn to read sheet music, she preferred to play by ear, and she preferred rock and roll to classical music. Tori has said she had a form of synesthesia where she sees compositions as structures of color and light, and she sees her songs as actual, fully formed characters, her "girls" as she calls them, and sometimes they fight for a place on the record, or decide not to be, just as sometimes they show up to the show she's playing, or they don't, it's up to them.

I believe that this winter is the last winter of her childhood. Spring and summer are around the corner and puberty is about to hit. Her Dad knows this. That's what I think this song is about. Interestingly, her father was a Methodist pastor and her first resident gig was playing piano in a gay bar when she was 13 years old. A lot of her father's friends were concerned about her safety at playing at such a place. He said that it was probably the safest place for a young girl to be playing at. I was obsessed with Tori Amos for a while there in the early '90s. Her first three albums are all masterpieces. Her later albums are probably great as well, but I drifted away from her music. With some artists they give you just what you need at a certain time in your life and Tori did this for me back then.

Yes, Tori is both kind and a force of peace. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting her at a meet and greet, but she's done literally hundreds. Photos and videos show her smiling and hugging and showing empathy. It's part of her process. She meets people, hears their stories, reads their letters, and finds inspiration for more songs about the human experience and growth. And then you hear the stories of those she's met and how much her support meant to them. How her music has saved lives. Tori's impact cannot be understated. She also cofounded RAINN, the Rape and Incest National Network. Her song, Me and a Gun, is partially autobiographical.

It's all true. I did interact with her at a meet and greet once, and she was amazing and totally willing to play along with my ridiculous photo request. To this day, every time I see her I'm reminded of her wonderful energy. It bugs me that she was often treated as a punchline by a lot of people who scoffed at her and dismissed her music based on a stereotype of her they learned from mainstream media or whatever. Just look at the quality of this performance. It's a sad commentary on our culture.

Tori Amos is amazing. Watch the live Montreux concert performance of “Me and A Gun”. She did it before this song in the set if I recall. It’s absolutely stilling and moving at the same time. Calling Tori a rebellious Disney princess is apt. She was the youngest person , a literally prodigy, to get into the most prestigious music school in the World and she got thrown out before even becoming a teen bc she was ‘musically insubordinate’. She was too gifted to play by their musical rules. She bends the rules and rewrites them, turning sound into feeling in effortless fashion.

Tori's dad was a pastor in southern church in Virginia. She was raised and sang in the church most her younger life. So you're interpretation is spot on...she and her parents were close and loving but she Tori or Mary Ellen to her parents was nothing like them and they embraced her and were her biggest cheerleaders. xoxo. I always take this to be a conversation between Tori and her dad and she believes she isn’t ready to move on but he is explaining to her that you are ready and whatever decisions you make they are yours and I will support you and I will always be there if you need me, and I’m proud of you and through the song she starts to get self belief and understands what he is trying to say to her and who he is to her and who she can be .

Oh, Tori Amos is a goddess, simply a goddess. The emotion, fierceness, and etherealness of her entire being is legend. This is a great rabbit hole! Another incredible ethereal talent you may enjoy is Loreena McKennitt. The Mummer's Dance was her most popular piece, it was the theme song to the movie, Ever After. Other songs that are amazing: The Mystic's Dream, Night Ride Across the Caucasus, Skellig, The Old Ways, Bonny Portmore, Caravanserai, Lady of Shallott, Stolen Child, All Souls Night, The Bonny Swans... she does a lot of traditional (Irish/Scottish) songs, amazing instrumentation, incredible voice. She creates haunting worlds with her music.

"I feel like this song is up for interpretation and what someone is going through in life." Yes! You got it. Tori has said that she writes her songs with the guidance of the Muses. Like, the songs already exist and she's interpreting them through her own filter. Most of her songs are much more complex than this, actually. It's pretty straightforward comparatively. Tori doesn't usually explain meanings so that the songs can mean whatever they're meant to mean to whoever listens to them.

I think it is a coming of age tale, but also a declaration of love between daughter and father, and a recognition of the hopes and dreams he put on a shelf for the sake of her. The white horses represent her hopes and dreams, still dormant in the little girl, but in the final chorus they have ”gone ahead”, and her father encourages her to start following them.

The song Icicle (Jay Leno Tonight Show) is again mesmerizing, and provocative for 90's live TV. Or, popular hits Silent All These Years, Crucify, and Cornflake Girl. My favorite part lyrically is the imagery of the white horses. They represent the forces in life that will pull her and her father apart (basically just growing up into a woman). In the first two choruses they were still in bed. There is still time, but her father says she must decide (make up your mind) and she doesn't believe him thinking things will always be this way. By the third chorus the pull of the world has happened, and the white horses have gone ahead. She is reluctant to leave but knows she must. When she says "Never change" she is swearing to always remember to return when she can and honor herself. Beautiful.
