I am an original Blink. When their Rihanna Dance Video dropped everyone I knew wanted to know WHO they were and what else they were doing. For me, this was THE ONE!!! This type of music does absolutely nothing for me. But, as a person who's spent his whole career in film & video production, their videos are really fun to watch. The art direction is just incredible! Except for a very small number of artists, American labels haven't put this kind of money into music videos since the 90s. I really miss that level of production value. I've become a bit of a BlackPink fan for that reason alone.

So I knew of K-pop but from what I knew it was fairly sugary, and obviously in a language I didn't know or understand. So I had never really paid attention to it. Then I came across Popstars by KDA a virtual girl pop group. Made up of game characters from Riot games universe, essentially a way to promote paid skins for their game league of legends through music. And that was it, from here on out it's been a rabbit hole. From loving KDA to listening to the music of two of the voices, behind the characters, a group called G-idle. That led to Black pink, BTS, more Riot inspired bangers, Jesse, and so many more. It just keeps rolling,. At the moment I'm stuck on a song from a new K-pop group "new jeans", with the extremely catchy get's stuck in your head song "attention". Thing is years ago I would not have been into that type or style of music, hell I don't think it's even for my age group. But what can I say you change, and what once you didn't listen to or appreciate. Later can become something you enjoy and look forward to. And even the fact it's in a different language, doesn't bother me where years ago it would have. And there is modern technology like subtitles, it's really no big deal so yes no one asked for this commentary lol. But here it is, my thoughts on this genre. Often catchy, colourful and vibrant, generally good vibes. Great dancing and performance. And while I know in this modern age, your not allowed to notice or say it. Especially if your a guy, but the young women are extremely attractive. Hell even the guys are handsome and I'm not even gay, but I have to be honest their skin appears flawless. And the production value and quality both in sound and visuals, it really is often very special. And I think the greatest takeaway to K-pop is it makes you feel good, the world is pretty bleak lately. A lot of negativity doing the rounds, but with good vibes I think if your feeling down. Listening to this music long term can do you a lot of good, as well as get stuck in your head.

I guess being old I just don't see it. I'm sure there's a ton of talent there just covered up with a lot of flashy choreography and noise. Sorry just not for me. If your looking for a hidden gem and somewhat esoteric take a look into Mean Mary and particularly Death and the Maiden. What a ballad right up there with the likes of Gordon Lightfoot. She has a voice that's incredible and a whole lot of other songs that are awesome. BTW love the channel. Just found it and I'm impressed. I get a real kick out of you not knowing or hearing of bands and musicians that were well known when I was young. Keep up the good work.

Ok as much as you like BlackPink you should look into MamaMoo a older generation KPop group. I would suggest you start with their Killing voice medley. The styles and vocals are worlds apart in KPop from song to song let alone group to group.
