Lionel is a masterclass lyricist. Spent many nights in the early 80’s waiting to hear his songs come on the radio, or calling the radio DJ to request a song and dedicate it to that certain special person out there

Lionel Richie wrote the lyrics and composed the music to a multitude of #1 and top #10 songs on the record charts and wrote songs for other vocal artists. He was and stil is gifted and talented. Everyone played his songs in the 1970's and 1980's. I took my college girlfriend to a Commadors concert in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 1980. It was an enjoyable evening. Lionel is definitely worthy of being on your play list. You just have to listen to all his songs.

In the Commodores Band, Mr. Richie played the Saxophone and the piano. He sung lead on some songs and also did background vocals when others sang lead. The band started in the late 60's when a group of Tuskegee institute students (one of which was Lionel Richie) got together and formed the band. He broke out from the band in the early 80s, after he and Diana Ross sung the song "Endless Love" for the movie. I love the Commodore songs: Just Want to be Close to You, Jesus is Love, 3 times a Lady, Easy, Sail On and Brick House... just to name a few.😊 I just saw Earth, Wind and Fire and Lionel Richie in concert in DC earlier this year. It was a real treat!🤩😊

Since 1974 they had 4 top albums in a row (that I like) - first album "Machine Gun" (instrumental song) is still my favourite with Assembly Line and Human Zoo. The Commodore were on Motown-Label and had all band members singing - especially Thomas McClary. Brick House was often played in a row with Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music - a real floorshaker.

The Commodores were a self contained band. This song is by The Commodores "Still" is the story of a couple who decide to end their marriage to save their friendship. Lionel Richie got the idea for this song from the failing marriage of his childhood friend William "Smitty" Smith. After Smith's marriage broke up, the two buddies had a long conversation from 9 p.m. to sunrise in which they agreed that it's better to divorce as friends than stay married and hate each other. This song is about a marriage that has ended and he's telling her that he still loves her. People don't pay attention to lyrics, I attended a wedding once and the song was song during the ceremony. Obviously neither the bride nor the groom read the lyrics. Radio personality Tom Joyner was an original member of The Commodores. Lionel Richie was originally the saxophonist in the group that was formed at Tuskegee University in 1968. "Sail On" by the Commodores is also about a divorced couple where he tells the woman to "sail on", the song has a country & western sound.

The best PDC candidate is probably Just to Be Close to You. Another well written (but sad) song is Oh No. As a bonus, it’s featured in a sad 80’s teen movie (The Last American Virgin).

I think this song was their last #1 hit in the U.S. during the Lionel Richie era. It was basically a Lionel tune and not so much a Commodores tune. A lot of my friends frowned upon this song when it came out but I loved it. I guess they thought it was too depressing. One thing for sure, you don't hear true ballads like this anymore. Another thing...it was at this point where it felt like there was slight distancing between Lionel and the rest of the group but they would never be called Lionel Richie and the Commodores. This happens with many groups where one singer would end up going out on their own the rest have to hold down the fort. Today there are only 3 members left. One of them passed away.
