So the final scene. Jinshi already knew Maomao was kidnapped and sold because Maomao said so in the past (forgot if Maomao told him directly at some point or Jinshi just heard from the other people who interviewed her when joining the jade pavilion, but he's basically the manager so he'd be told). What Jinshi was looking at in the final scene is just a record saying Maomao was sent in to the rear palace by Fengming's family (I believe disguised as a far relative or something in the novel), which means it was Fengming's family or a relative that bought Maomao. Since Fengming was caught committing the sever crime of attempting to poison one of the emperor's top 4 concubine, they are investigating everyone sent in by her family, and Maomao was on that list.

This wasn’t explained in the anime, but Maomao’s kidnappers pretended to be her family to sell her to the rear palace. Back then, it was common for families to sell their children to reduce the number of mouths to feed and make some money. The kidnappers had connections with Fengming's family, either as relatives or business partners. Capital punishment in that era didn’t just target the main culprit, it also extended to their entire family and business partners

I think Ah-Duo was hoping that by the time Jinshi was old enough for people to realize what was going on, he'd be healthy enough to be out of danger and she could pass it off as "Whoops, guess the babies got switched, oh well, let's just put things back the way they were" and Jinshi would go back to being *her* son and the worst they would suffer is a minor scandal they could blame on the doctor. But with the younger prince passing away, any hope of getting Jinshi back vaporized because even though they realized the swap, there was no way to switch Jinshi back without massively upsetting the line of succession. So they just decided to keep things as they were. It's likely that Ah-Duo ruptured her uterus during labor and either needed a full hysterectomy or was left with so much scar tissue, she just couldn't get pregnant anymore because there was nowhere for a placenta to attach. Also, worth noting, Ah-Duo's mother was the emperor's wetnurse. It was common for noble women to have servants breastfeed their children for them. This is why she and the emperor were so close. They practically grew up together as siblings. And while the emperor does love her dearly, she always viewed him as more of a friend, someone she could treat as an intellectual equal. If the whole traumatic birth thing hadn't happened, Ah-Duo likely would have become the empress consort.

A child "sold for work" to the royal palace has part of her salary send to her family. Therefor each servant is link with a family, and the family (who solde Maomao) are business partner with lady flemming familly. As far as Ah-Duo and the emperor being foster sibling, it's a miss-translation: they are Milk-sibling, they were raised drinking the milk of the same mother (the emperor nanny, Ah-Duo mother)

@ Nah, i don't believe Ah-Duo is Emperor's true love, I don't believe the Emperor has true love at all. True love is for commoners & maybe few noble women. Emperor and his kind are hard-wired to not fixated on one thing because it would be a liability & clouded their judgement. Emperor put Ah-Duo nearby because their son is alive and living in the palace. I guarantee he'd give the same treatment to Gyokuyou or Lihua if the same thing happened to them.

BY THE WAY if you notice in the scene where Maomao sees Jinshi and Ah Duo side by side, when she makes the swap speculation as she's looking right at the two of them, part of the speculation is that Jinshi is royal, not just a eunuch. But she dismisses it as a wild story in the end, so she still doesn't know or hasn't accepted the possibility that Jinshi is royalty 😂

To me that last little bit was telling me that Fengming‘s family is the one who kidnapped Maomao. Or at least were involved near the end of the process. So maybe they bought Maomao from the actual kidnappers and did the ‘sending her’ to the rear palace, and are the ones collecting money. Fengming possibly wouldn’t even had known of it being that it said it was her family and those connected to them. We don’t know exactly how close that connection really is. That is all my own conjecture, I don’t know any spoilers
@Derekloffin
@Derekloffin 5 күн бұрын
The family thing is pretty simple. The 'family' that is actually Maomao's kidnappers are registered officially as Maomao's family (since they receive payment for Maomao's service in the rear palace, or rather did before the little stunt they pulled to deprive them of such) even though they are not. They in turn are linked to Fengming's family.

I think the swap thing isn’t explained as well in the anime, so this is from a comment from a manga reader that I read once. Basically Ah-Duo wanted to have better care for her son and wanted to swap, but also the empress dowager didn’t want her baby since it was forced on her by the previous pdf emperor. So both women were willing to make the swap, and it was with Maomaos dad that they were able to swap the babies. So that would explain how they even managed to swap the babies without people finding out, and why they would make the swap in the first place. Although idk if that’s true since I read it in the comments, but it seems to make sense

・There's a scene where Maomao and Jinshi suck the nectar from an azalea flower, and I did the same thing when I was a kid, but I didn't know it was poisonous at the time (lol) ・"Ignorance is a sin" has been a theme from the beginning, but the amount of information and research results are very different between modern society and the era when "Maomao" and others lived. ・In Japan, the information that ``honey should not be given to infants'' was recently announced by a government agency (in 1986). In the time when "MAO MAO" existed, it seems that the only knowledge of honey was that it was "a food with excellent nutrition and nutritional value".It's a tragedy. ・In modern times, there is no such thing as jointly punishing those involved.

One more question comes to mind - realistically, would Ah-Duo have been kept in the rear palace with Lishu and the then-emperor’s other concubines? Was it common IRL for the wife of a crown prince to live in the Forbidden City? (From what I’ve read, a concubine arrangement under such conditions is already unusual.) It’s pretty much essential to the narrative; if she was housed elsewhere, Luomen wouldn’t have been the doctor attending to her. And I guess we don’t have a basis for comparison in the setting’s present day; we don’t know where a wife or concubine of Jinshi’s would be housed. Could be there’s a place in the rear palace for that.

Fengming's family was related to a family of merchants that notably sold honey amoung other goods. That being the case the kidnappers arent just random thugs that took a payday but rather they are muscle working for another group of merchants. Because the two different companies worked together Maomao who in order to be sold into the rear palace was registered as the merchants daughter has a professional connection to Fengming. Fengming's crime was so severe trying to kill a concubine of such high rank, (while it is known Lishu was the target it remains possible that the public story remains that Gyokuyou mother of the Emperor's only surviving child was the target), because of this rather than risk it being a one time event they tracked down all people even remotely connected to that family. And in regards to how they have those records firstly they have tax records that could go a long way in additon to every girl "bought" to work in the rear palace is actually a contracted employee and one of the biggest incentives to this is pay being sent to the "family" of the girl meaning almost if not all individuals who entered the rear palace have detailed records of who they are supposedly related to and home adresses in order to know where to send the money.

I'm glad that Ah Duo left the rear palace. I like her character more after she gained more freedom to be her cheeky self. Also, if Jinshi is really her child, that would make him not the emperor's brother but his firstborn son. That would make him first in line for the throne. There was all kind of political tension because the Emperor currently lacks a male heir, so that would make a huge difference.

As for the Jinshi baby swap I want to say that all of the immediately relevant infromation has been given so this comment is not a spoiler. So two babies were born one to the previous Emperor and one to the current Emperor who at the time was a prince. When the babies were born the concubine swapped her own child (Jinshi) for the second prince. Saddly the Second Prince perished due to eating honey while too young however her actual child is officially at least on record the current Emperor's younger brother. However if this swap were ever revealed it would most likely be a diplomatic nightmare thay no one really knows how it would play out. How do you punish the Emperor? At this time the Imperial bloodline is seen as divine and thus the Emperor and by extension his children are gods but in additon the dead prince was also considered divine. You could punish the concubine who with the knowledge that her child is actually alive is actually mother of the crown prince and thus it is her right to be Empress Dowager but then you run into the obstacle that the current Emperor might just kill everyone that poses a threat to his children and the mothers of his children. Finally you could punish Jinshi himself but the Emperor's protection still extends to him and because he is next in line to be the Emperor meaning if you dont completely destroy him he could very easily and justifiably take revenge on those that wronged him because they stood in the way of a "god" accending to his rightful place upon the throne.

Okay, this might be my biggest frustration with the narrative: after all that fuss about the coded fire signals, we never find out what they were about. Fengming’s assassination plans didn’t require conspiring with anyone outside the rear palace as far as we can tell, or even the Garnet Pavilion. Maomao never mentions the signals to Fengming, even though the burns on Fengming’s arm are the whole reason she became a suspect. There’s just no sense of how this mystery’s central clue connects to the rest of it.
@IZEASGT
@IZEASGT 5 күн бұрын
On a more minor note, it feels like there’s a lot being left unsaid in the exchange at 5:43-6:13, and I admit I don’t entirely follow. It seems like it makes the most sense if Maomao’s point is “There’s no point in buying my silence, because it won’t do you any good. They’ll catch you with or without my help. It’s too late for you to escape the gallows.” And by confronting her and laying it out, Maomao was at least able to help her keep her great shame hidden to the end. But I’m not really sure that’s true. *What happens if Maomao doesn’t confront Fengming?* Would Fengming have been identified as the culprit if she hadn’t turned herself in? All they have on her is circumstantial evidence - the burns on her arms (which, again, don’t connect) and the drowned girl with bound feet being one of her subordinates. And I guess once Fengming confessed and gave her motive as “keep Ah-Duo in the rear palace”, they wouldn’t have bothered investigating further… but I’m not sure they would’ve put the pieces together anyway. How many people even know Lishu has an issue with honey? How many people know Fengming started intimidating her away from the Garnet Pavilion, back during the last emperor’s reign, five years ago or more? Does even Lishu herself remember that she ever mentioned her experience with honey to Fengming? If people _are_ assuming the prince died from lead poisoning (and it was only this year that the face powder was banned from the palace), who remembers Luomen’s time there well enough _and_ knows him well enough to realize he wouldn’t have allowed it? If they _do_ realize Venetian ceruse wouldn’t have been involved, would they think anything was strange about it, instead of just shrugging and saying “It’s a premodern society, 25% of babies or more die in their first year, whatchagonnado?” I just can’t see any scenario where Fengming’s true motive becomes public. Which is frustrating, because it’s all _really_ powerful stuff. Shame is one of my favorite themes.
