This song is about New Orleans. The Doobies spent some time there and fell in love with the city and all of what makes it special - the Mississippi River, Dixieland Jazz, dancing to Cajun music with pretty girls, and taking streetcars (trolley cars) Uptown. You can't go wrong with the Doobies. They're an American treasure.

If this is your first Doobie Brother's song, you've got alot of searching and listening to do, they were probably the most successful of the 70's groups, they were huge. Takin it to the Streets, China Grove, Long Train Runnin', Listen to the Music, What a Fool Believes, etc...., ! You can't go wrong with the Doobie Brothers.

OMG I can't believe this is the first time you've reacted to The Doobie Brothers! 😮 Their catalog is enormous, with many many hits. They are one of my favorite bands; so talented, so versatile, and so enduring. They are still touring and recording, after 50 years! I suggest Long Train Runnin', Listen to the Music, and Jesus is Just Alright from their early years. Then, from their later years: Takin' It To the Streets, It Keeps You Runnin', and What a Fool Believes.

I might have had one of the coolest middle school social studies classes in the history of the world. We would read a textbook and listen to rock on the radio, this song was popular at the time. I remember this song, have no idea what was in the book though. I had 3 classes in three years where the music played most of the time, this social studies class, a drafting class and theater class building sets etc.

It's a great song, but I don't know that it's what I would have picked for a first Doobies song to hear. I'd have started with more of a rocker like China Grove or Long Train Running to get them hooked first before veering into Black Water.

I saw The Doogie Brothers in the 80s when a general admission concert ticket was only $20! They were fantastic.. just as crisp and smooth live as the recording. It was in south Mississippi so them singing Blackwater made the crowd go insane.

There are 2 eras of the Doobs. Early was Tom Johnston on lead guitar & when he had to take a break; Michael McDonald stepped in on the piano. It was more rock, blues, jazz & R&B at first. Then it became more pop. My personal fave, since you did this one, is Jesus is Just Alright. This is we were first introduced to them in the early 70’s. In my top 3 faves after Zep & the Beatles!

"Black Water" was a No. 1 pop hit for the Doobie Brothers in the U.S. in 1975. Guitarist Patrick Simmons wrote the song and sings lead vocals on it. (By the way, a "doobie" is a slang word for a joint, or marijuana cigarette. :-) ) The band's original lineup, formed in 1970 and which included Simmons, mostly featured Tom Johnston singing lead vocals, on songs such as "Long Train Runnin'," "Listen to the Music," "Take Me in Your Arms" and "The Doctor." Michael McDonald joined the band in 1975 and took over lead vocals on songs such as "Takin' It to the Streets," "What a Fool Believes" and "Minute by Minute." In the early years, Simmons also sang lead on "Jesus Is Just Alright" and "Tell Me What You Want (And I'll Give You What You Need)."

Before I watch this, as a concerned subscriber, I saw an article in today's local Ottawa newspaper titled "Volunteer Georgian Fighters Stiffening Ukraines Defences". It is in the Ottawa Citizen paper dated Thursday Feb. 17 and written by Neil Hauer. I love my music and my guitar but I also love freedom and non violent humans. I really hope you guys and your fellow countrymen and all of eastern Europe stay safe. There are many evil regimes throughout the planet and that whole area is facing one right now. I'm not religious at all so I will just say "Bless all of you". Cheers from the canadian Queen nut.

Bros, you'll be surprised by most Doobie Brothers songs. In the 70s they mainly had very catchy rock songs with loud guitars and great harmonies. In the 80s they were more of a jazzy pop/rock group with Michael Macdonald doing most of the vocals. Great band that had two drummers on stage!
