A lot of reactors want to "classify" these 70's bands into a certain genre. But many groups, like the Doobies, Marshall Tucker Band, Hall and Oats, etc., are genres' of their own and really defy classification. The Doobs have a ton of other material to dive into and most of it is securely in the "rock" genre, but lots of it is just like this, something only they could have come up with. I've seen them live about 10 times in the last 8 years, as recently as 2 weeks ago. All of them are amazingly talented.

This is sometimes referred to as Swamp Rock, like a lot of CCR's music. I remember the first time I heard this song and another of their songs China Grove. It was 1975 and my family and I were taking a vacation trip to Branson, Missouri, when I heard both of these songs. We lived in rural SE Arkansas and there weren't any rock stations in that area, only country stations, so these songs had been out 1 or 2 years when I heard them, but every time I hear them it reminds me of that time my family and I traveled to Branson. Wonderful memories.

After we moved from texas, I lived about 3 mi from the Missouri River and as such a little kid, it has a way of getting under your skin, I was over there a lot and it's just so Majestic and powerful and amazing and scary and frightening and comforting and Serene and it's just so damn big basically. That's why this early Doobie Brothers song Always resonated with me, so much and then they throw in that acapella Dixieland thing and it's just a weird but brilliant. We moved there when I was in kindergarten, and I remember that when first grade started we were in a classroom that had a drinking fountain in it, one of the old ceramic ones with the metal handles, it didn't have a refrigeration unit built in like the modern ones. And it's hilarious looking back but they were talking to us in first grade calling us young adults and trying to instill a sense of responsibility but you know how kids are at that age. They were like, you're a young adults now that means you don't have to ask permission to go down the hallway and get a drink of water from the drinking fountain out there you can just go back here in the classroom and whenever you want. But really it was just because of whatever reasons they situated the class there and it happened to have it, but I think it was just the teacher trying to work it into her spiel. But because I was one of those kids that love being outside and I loved recess at school, I could never get enough. I was also always thirsty and I would go back there constantly. She gave me a couple warnings saying things like, Mr Dahlberg! You're going to drink up all the water in the Mississippi River at this rate! But I kept doing it until finally my drinking privileges were revoked and I told my parents about it and my mom cited with her and says I was out of line and my dad didn't say much but he took one of our one gallon milk jugs and put a leather collar around it and a rope made out of two or three lengths of twine Twisted together and then he grabbed a stack of Dixie cups from the garage and so I went to school the next day and it was Heavy to carry in first grade, and I set it all out on my desk and then I proceeded to pour myself a Dixie cup of water from the gallon milk jug and her jaw just dropped. She could not believe it. I got sent to the principal's office and they took that away and confiscated it but man that is a really fond memory of me and for some reason it popped up thinking about this song that was on the radio all the time around then.

The difficulty you're running into is categorizing a certain song by a band and it's already tough enough to categorize bands a lot of the time. But they were basically a rock band if you listen to a lot of their stuff but the difficulty comes in when for example let's say a band like April Wine does a ballad like sign of the Gypsy queen, I mean if you just heard that one song that would be soft rock I suppose or something but if you listen to all of this stuff you like oh no they are definitely a rock band. It was the same with the Doobie brothers. And lots of bands

My mom was a coal miner's daughter and she always called this hillbilly, rockabilly or blue grass music, being from the Appalachian area. However, going more south you would hear it called swamp rock or country.

They are definitely a rock band. You cannot tell the genre from one song of a band from the 60s and 70s. It is only today where they play the same kind of music all the time. Great reaction though. Keep it up

That's so funny because you recognized that there were strings earlier but when it comes in more individually after the first verse, you're like, hey is that a violin? And I knee-jerk reaction was, come on Silas you know that in this context that's a fiddle. And within literally like 300 milliseconds you said oh wait a minute, fiddle, lol. ❤

hey buddy, good to see you again. I can't believe this is your first Doobie!!! Well congrats, son. You picked a fine one to start with, for sure. I would call this like a Delta Blues, maybe. I never really bothered to categorize songs or groups. If they rock, they're a rock band to me. ANYTHING from The Midnight Special is groovy and awesome. You'd get a kick at seeing the lineup. Its amazing they're not a psychedelic band 😂 try, Jesus Is Just Alright. Banger

Thanks, Silas! Easily my favorite by the Doobies.. I never cared much for their songs with Michael MacDonald.. I guess he's okay, but to me, it changed the "vibe".. these guys were awesome.. and this song is a perfect showcase for their talents...! appreciate your reaction... (I would classify this as blues/folk/country/R&B...in other words, a "fusion")
