Steppenwolf's condemnation of "The Pusher", it's so intense, he can't express hard enough, how much he hates the pusher. There are people, of course, who couldn't care less about the pusher, drugs kill, right? The pusher, though, is the guy who's out there trying to "push" the people into trying it so in hopes he can get them hooked, he'll even give you a sample for free, to see if you like it, after that, you have to pay. Steppenwolf has lots of really cool songs, "Rock Me", "Jupiter's Child", "Snowblind Friend", "Hey Lawdy Mama", "It's Never Too Late", "Ride With Me" and "Magic Carpet Ride". This was cool, maybe somewhere down the road you can try the longer version.

This song was written by Hoyt Axton. A songwriter, actor, Country Singer, old school dude. He wrote many songs that were big hits, mostly country music. He was in Cowboy & Western Films.

The 60's was such an incredible time for music. I used to go to a local record store, and I would buy albums, not knowing anything about the group who had recorded the LP, just because I liked the album cover. I "discovered" so many great groups in this way ..... the Doors, Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Hendrix, Zappa, the Youngbloods, and many others. These artists had not even reached the radio stations in our region of the country, so I was buying totally blind. Steppenwolf was one such group. Needless to say, my teenage mind was totally blown by the musical treasures I uncovered way back then. This 1st album by Steppenwolf remains one of my favorites, and this cut is a killer .... Happy listening ..... and many thanks for renewing my love and interest for the music from what I consider to be the greatest era in the history of popular music ....

I and many others knew you guys would love this song from Steppenwolf btw the band performed this song in a small bar in Orange County of south of Los Angeles. I am going to give you guys some information on Steppenwolf. Steppenwolf was an American-Canadian rock band that was prominent from 1968 to 1972. Pretty much the whole band dressed in Black leather especially John Kay who when he sang moved his hips around like a snake ready to strike! Especially when he had a mic stand on stage. It was like watching a Black Python Snake ready to make with the audience and he got famous for that movement which was way before Prince ever did this movement. So, when he perform this song he was grinding the Mic stand and the Mic stand was between his legs while he layed on stage yelling "God Damned The Pusher man!!!" My friends and I went CRAZY!!!! WE were yelling and Screaming, "God Damned The PUSHER MAN!!!!" Hahaha....lol.....hahaha....it was a lot of fun!!!!! "The Pusher" was put out in 1968.....and the song was banned from many radio stations in America. "Born To Be Wild" was also put out in 1968....became a theme song for the cult movie, "Easy Rider." " Snowblind Friend" was put out in 1970. I request tht you guys react to "Snowblind Friend." It is FIRE!!!!! And then react to "Born To Be Wild."

This came out in 1969 in the movie 'Easy Rider' as did a couple other songs by SteppenWolf. I was a 17 yr. old Senior in High School. We lived in a rural town in Northern California. Drugs had just shown up there and this song meant something as we had more O.D.'s than we should have. The Pushers were from out of town and not nice. It was a rude awakening and not a good one. So this holds bittersweet memories for me. Great reaction gentlemen.

This and Snow Blind Friend was written by Hoyt Acton whose mother wrote Heart Break Hotel for Elvis. Hoyt had his problems with drugs and this song shows it very well. By the way, he was the father in Gremlins in the Disney movie who brought his son the Gremlin.

Bros! So happy you guys hit this one from Steppenwolf! I have this vivid memory of walking into what was then called a ‘head shop’ with my older brother while on vacation with our parents. Summertime by the lake in New England. I was too young to even know what ‘headshop’ meant but my brother knew. Anyway, the combination of the psychedelic posters, burning incense and THIS SONG playing was my introduction to what would become ‘the 60s’. This song was featured in the classic 60’s movie Easy Rider. You should check it out and cure up Magic Carpet Ride next!

Everyone smokes pot in the late 60's and early 70's and this song was designed to be listened laying on the carpet after smoking. But weed was different back then. This new hybrid smoke is so strong it is almost toxic. This period gets a bad rap. We just wanted to enjoy life before we jumped on the career/job train we all knew was coming. So we grew up and went on with our lives.

The subject matter is very serious but it's such a great rockin tune that you can't help but love it. He sang "If I was the President I'd shoot him down" and that says a lot. If you ever had a drug problem, you might not like this song so much, maybe? I'm just guessing. I still love the song and I'm glad you guys did too! Patrick, you should lay on the floor and listen! I am from the state of Georgia in the South Eastern US. Spent my entire teenage years growing up in the 70s. Seen 100s of bands and always knew the music from that decade was great. But now as a 60+ year old man I can say there has been nothing even close to what they were making then. I really enjoy y'alls reactions to the music of the 70s.

Finally got to see John Kay and Steppenwolf in 2007, been listening to them since 1969, and they were still rocking hard, plus they were opening for Deep Purple. BONUS. The first album I ever bought was the "Easy Rider" Soundtrack album, because of this song. They said "God Damn" in a song! Never heard that before. Thanks for the memories.
