I believe this is the concert where Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for the Rolling Stones and absolutely blew them outta the water! ♥️

And Ronnie walked his guitar army out onto the tongue part of the stage during Free Bird, something that was expressly forbidden by Mick Jagger.

It was August of 1976 and literally just 14 months later the plane crashed. Such a tragedy. Not only did they destroy the Stones that day but they also murdered 10cc as well. Look up the performance of the Stones and 10cc from this festival and it's astounding how much better Skynyrd was that day. David Gilmour and Paul McCartney were at this show as well and they also smoked some pot with Jack Nicholson too. LOL! Different times for sure.

They are THE BEST! I love this band SO much. No, you can’t compete with this band, especially this lineup. This was in England, and they were opening for The Rolling Stones. They blew the Stones off the stage, and their manager told me Mick Jagger was furious. AND, there were three guitarists, not just two, and the bass guitarist. The camera didn’t show Gary as much as Steve and Allen, but he was, and still is an integral part of the band.

They all did solos including Billy Powell on the piano. The sound quality ain't great, for some reason you can't hear Gary's solo that good. But they all brought thier A game on this day. All respect to the Stones , in fact, it was a Stones concert that Ronnie went to that he decided thats what he wanted to do. But, I wouldn't wanna follow Skynyrd either.

Oh guys one of my favorites from Skynyrd 🔥🔥 They were a guitar band 🎸🎸🎸 I think I suggested this one not long ago!! So glad you did this version. The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant & the guitarist in the middle Steve Gaines were the ones that were sadly killed in the plane crash Oct 20, 1977 along with Cassie Gaines one of the back up singers & Dean Kirkpatrick their manager 😢 What a sad day that was. Any song from this performance at Knebworth is fire 🔥🔥🔥

They were just so overwhelmingly talented. Listen to each instrument and youll see that each and every one of them were absolutely top tier players. And the guitar interplay is just FANTASTIC how they each step forward for a blistering solo while the other support. They set each other up and hand off SO WELL. This is one of my absolutely favorite LS songs.

I saw them for the first time at Pine Knob (near Detroit) in June of 1976. I knew maybe four of their songs from the radio, but had never heard any of their music other than that. The live album wasn't released until that fall. The show I went to was right around the same time as this one. I had no idea what to expect. They came on and started with 'Workin' For MCA', and I was a fan for life after that first song. They were amazing. Just imagine barely knowing their music and then seeing a whole show this good. As great as they sound watching these clips, being there is just a whole different experience. They had such great energy, and every song was fantastic. I've seen Jethro Tull, Zeppelin, The Who, Ten Years After and many others, and that show was as good as any other I've been to. I saw them again that November at Ford Auditorium, and then had tickets to see them at Cobo Hall in June of 1977. That show had to be postponed until Halloween Day (Oct 31st). I was able to get several tickets about 10 rows from the stage, so we had a big group that couldn't wait to see that show and had waited for almost six months because of the postponement. They had the plane crash 11 days before that show was scheduled. Besides being a huge disappointment for us, it was a huge loss for rock and roll. What a great band. It's so nice to have live clips like this out here on KZbin so that everyone can get an idea of how great some of these bands were.

Even the roadies reeked of talent for Skynyrd. Saw this line-up in September, 1976 when Steve Gaines had literally been in the band about 3 months at that point and I don't have the words to even describe what an incredible live show this band played. Nobody did it better live than Lynyrd Skynyrd!!

It is. Was in the UK. Supposedly the walk out from the stage was a replica of a big tongue from their Sticky Fingers Album. Mick Jagger passed the word around that no other groups were allowed to go out on it. It was just for them. Well, knowing Ronnie Van Zant that didn’t go very well with him. So when Skynyrd went out to perform he pushed his guitarist Steve, Gary and Allen out there just to piss Jagger off. However I believe it was just when they were performing Free Bird. Now, I don’t know if this is true but when they were leaving the stage it was said that Van Zant passed Jagger and flipped him off letting him know he didn’t listen to him. Like I said I don’t know if that part is true but knowing Van Zant, yeah I could see it happening. News articles did say Skynyrd did blow The Stones performance away. They also said that by the time the Stones came out they were three sheets in the wind !! Would have loved to be there also! This was supposed to have been one of their best performances.

Gentlemen. Point of clarification. Lynyrd Skynyrd had THREE GUITARISTS at this concert. THREE of the baddest ass guitarists to EVER play Rock N Roll, Southern Rock, Southern Blues Rock. They were Alan Collins. Gary Rossington. Steve Gaines (who replaced Ed King). Steve was better than Ed in my opinion. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the GREATEST AMERICAN MADE BAND IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK N ROLL. They are my favorite band in the HISTORY or recorded music. I’d put their music and musicians along side ANY who ever play. Listen to their entire collection. Listen to every live video that you can find here on KZbin. Put it along side any other Rock N Roll Band. Listen to one. Then listen to the other. Ain’t gonna find ANYTHING better. Skynyrd til I die😎😎😎

at 5:42 when you said "Now another one came," those two were the original two gituarists, Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. Add singer Ronnie Van Vant with those two and that's the original band left at the time of the video. We called it southern rock.

Love y'all Bros! Texas became a state thanks to Tennessee volunteers who gave their lives at the Alamo. Texas and Tennessee are bros! I have lived both halves of my life in both states! Never date a girl name Thelma, woman made a fool out of me too (no shit)! The song is mine, Skynyrd wrote it for me (just kiddin', but it's all true what I say)! Was so disappointed when Allen Collins strings broke when it was his turn to solo! He was always my favorite! Enjoyed it very much, the crowd never saw it coming!

Yes, Skynyrd totally blew the Stones out of the water. You'd think the Stones would be more careful in their choice of opening band, but no, I saw them in Houston with ZZTop opening, and that 3 man "little band from Texas" made the Stones sound like a poorly mixed garage band.

At this concert, Mick Jagger did not want Ronnie to walk on the giant tongue on the stage... Ronnie did it anyway... Jagger go so mad that he went to confront Ronnie .. but people told him that he shouldn't even think about getting crazy because Mick would be knocked the fuck out..... Ronnie had hands.. he was training to be a boxer before music... Ronnie got into a lot of fights... they did not really have to have security.. the band was the security.. another story is that when they were there in England they went to a bar and lo' and behold the English Olympic boxing team was there too and well, a huge fight started.... everybody was knocked out except Ronnie who was able to fight all of them off of him and got up outa there....
