@@mandychadwick6823 Didn’t he also have a rock solid alibi, being at a mental health drop in centre? Pretty sure he did, but I’m going from memory here (which admittedly isn’t the best). I neglected to mention that initially, along with a couple other things, that led me to believe he was innocent and informed my opinion. The GSR in his pocket(s)too, almost certainly the result of contamination since he didn’t own a firearm, as far as I recall (still haven’t watched the video so maybe good old Dr Grande covered that?). Seemed they wanted/needed to solve it as quickly as possible and, unfortunately, the ‘strange’ guy becomes the scapegoat. Soon as the ‘evidence’ they allegedly had against him became public knowledge, I had serious doubts. If he was at the mental health facility, don’t recall if they had CCTV, but they certainly had witnesses, then obviously it was almost impossible for him to have committed the crime.

"Journalists" with secure, high profile paychecks RARELY become whistle blowers unless they stumble upon a really solid case file, AND are known before that to be real diggers of facts. She was none of that. Unlikely. The Serb/Croat thang is more likely than that conspiracy . And they DO play rough.

@ Towpotts Fam That is a silly theory but it will find favour with tinfoil hat woke types who hate successful people, royalty, and authority more generally. The reality is that presenters like Jill Dando don't actually do research, they just read scripts put together by teams of researchers and writers and filtered by assistant producers, executive producers, publicists and programmers etc. The idea that presenters go on air and talk randomly about any old stuff they fancy is not how television works. There is a reason this video didn't even mention this crackpot theory.

The gun used was a modified Replica gun used by pretty thieves and drug dealers, professional assassins don't use crappy guns like that lol the killer also didn't wear gloves, again a Pro always wears gloves and there was a single shot, pros use the double tap or triple shot method to ensure death. The bullet was a small handmade crimped bullet, pros use 9mm or similar. Nothing professional about this.

Actually this is a very poor piece of work. In the UK it's widely known that Jill Dando was uncovering a pedophile story involving politicians and people high up in British society. I'm very surprised that Dr Grande hadn't uncovered this, as it's widely believed here that she was killed by the pedophile ring she was waboit to publish a story about. This video ends up, sadly, being too poorly researched to be of any value.

It was 1999 we didn't have the CCTV we have today. Now cameras are everywhere. The killer is believed to have caught a bus out of town. Whoever did it wouldn't get away with it today especially in broad daylight. He would be captured on camera somewhere. Buses now have onboard cameras, but then they didn't. It was a crime of its time, that's why he got away with it.

Please consider doing Jon Feeney, Springfield MO. High school science teacher, murdered his wife, 5-year-old son, and 18-month-old daughter. Brutal physical attacks, and the daughter was strangled. He Was acquitted a couple of years later. He had over six affairs at the murders. The case was on both dateline and Court tv. The most expensive trial in Greene county. The murders remain unsolved because the authorities believe that it was Jon and further investigation was not necessary. Happened in the early 90s I think. He now lives in Ecuador remarried with a new son and daughter.

No doubt it was a professional hitman who killed Jill. It is possible she was murdered, because she was about to expose a particular individual or individuals involved in child sexual abuse, who were in positions of power. Like other cases involving child sexual abuse, it is not unheard of for police cover-ups to happen. The BBC was known for its culture of covering up sexual abuse, she may have been so out spoken that someone decided it was time to get rid of her. It is interesting to note, that the doctor she was engaged to, said little after her death, and was given a prestigious position by the Royal Family. It is possible there was more to this case than is being discussed in this video.
@sjordan7085
@sjordan7085 2 жыл бұрын
@Pat M I think you are correct. Many women at the BBC had complained to do with the Jimmy Savile paedophile case, and no doubt he was just one of many. He ' rubbed shoulders' with the Royals, and fooled many, while committing the most horrendous acts on vulnerable children. It seems rather odd that the man Jill Dando was to marry, who was a doctor, was given a prestigious position by the Royal Family. Was that 'payment' for keeping his mouth shut? Who knows, but not surprising. Just one more cover-up, like the case of Madeleine Mc Cann. When a South African businessman took his ground sensing equipment, and claimed to have found something the size of a child's body, he had his life threatened for asking the police to investigate further. I think that Jill Dando's case is one of many we will never be told the truth about, regardless of how tragic her death was. She was a much loved celebrity.

Hello Dr Todd, As a Brit, I along with half the nation, was a fan of Jill Dando....she seemed to be a beautiful person both inside and out, and everyone was so happy for her when she got engaged to Alan (?) Farthing. The news of her murder stunned the nation, but I seem to recall that the Met Police made a few errors in their investigations. I was never convinced that it was Barry George....it was as if the police had to solve this case because of Jill's high profile and it was easy to fit Barry George to her murder as a matter of convenience to close the case. Although I have absolutely no evidence to suspect her fiancé, knowing how often murders are committed by, or via, family or those closest to the victim, I must admit that I was surprised that the police never appeared to even check with him. Unfortunately, I don't think that this will ever be solved, but I appreciate your insights into the case. RiP Jill. Penny from Christchurch. 🇬🇧

Hi Doc! As someone who lives on the other side of the pond, this murder was one of the most memorable, for it's utter cruelty and senselessness. Everyone loved Jill Dando. I just wanted to add something though. Many people were shocked at Barry George's conviction, as he simply seemed like a patsy. He had serious mental health issues and many argued he would have been incapable of committing such a crime. It wasn't a clear cut case against him and personally, I feel he was an easy target for the police. We'll never know for sure, but I don't think he was guilty (imo). Thanks as always for you work 🙌

Yes, they, people in other countries tend to see things from a whole different perspective, and have been known to be a bit 'off' sometimes, when it comes to the facts. Amanda Knox has been treated almost like a movie star in the U.S., when Meredith's family was so very gracious during the trial, and are the ones who deserve our sympathy. Sickening to lock eyes with Amanda on an escalator at the University of Washington. I doubt she is quite as innocent as she claims to be, yet she has been able to go about her life as though nothing happened. The movie about Amanda was more than a tad biased. Meredith's family had their lives changed forever, deeply sad, especially when she was obviously a good and decent young lady, just starting out in her life. Truly tragic! Such a waste!

The single particle of residue was found a year after the murder so there was plenty of time for contamination, deliberate or otherwise. You ought to have mentioned that in your summary. I get the impression that The Met (Metropolitan Police) would rather not find someone else responsible as it would reflect badly them and their methods. There have been miscarriages of justice before where the police ''tailored' evidence in their rush to convict. One case that stands out for me is the conviction of Stefan Kiszko who was received life imprisonment for the rape and murder of, 11 years old, Lesley Molseed. In Kiszko, the police found the perfect suspect and even when he was acquitted and released many believed him still to be guilty. He had spent 16 years in prison. The case then became unsolved and a DNA sample was obtained from some physical evidence, luckily not previously destroyed. Kiszko died a short time after leaving prison and against all odds a DNA match was found. In 2007 Ronald Castree was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Lesley Molseed. Far less so called evidence convicted Barry George.

Information found on Wikipedia complicates the case. When Jill went to her house in Chiswick, "by April 1999 was in the process of selling it and did not visit it frequently." That suggests Jill wasn't returning to her house on a regular schedule. In fact, she wasn't returning from work, but from her lover's house, and he was recently divorced. She was seeing him while he was still married, but separated. It's hard to imagine someone staked out on the property, waiting for who knows when she might show up. But maybe that's what happened. Regarding the Yugoslav connection, there was one. "the NATO bombing of the headquarters of Serbia's public broadcaster Radio Television of Serbia. The bombing had happened on 23 April 1999, and a number of prominent journalists had died." The caller said, "Re the murder of journalist. Tell your Prime Minister. In Belgrade 15 killed, so 14 more to go." Dando was tangentially connected to the war, "Mansfield (Barry George's attorney) suggested that Dando's earlier presentation of an appeal for aid for Kosovar Albanian refugees may have attracted the attention of Bosnian-Serb hardliners." The more I learn about this case, the harder it makes it to make up my mind or actually form a bias. Even this fellow Barry George, as repulsive an invertebrate he may be, it doesn't sound like the evidence against him for this specific incident was compelling.

I was thinking the same thing about her not visiting her house every often. But what exactly is "not often"? Once a week? Less? Did the killer know she was going there that day or did they happen to just see her? Or had they been watching her house for a while waiting for her to show up? The fact she still had mail going there though suggests to me she might have at least stopped by there often enough to pick up mail or maybe she had an assistant do that. I wonder why she was even going by there that particular day. This is a definitely a case I think I'm going to try and a few more videos about and look up some articles online. Interesting to see you bring this one up. At the time I knew Jill's brother Nigel as a work colleague, and he was a genuine nice guy, just as Jill was genuine. While I agree with your broad conclusion, I would disagree on the Barry George part of the theory. He was very much framed by the police who honed in early on him because he was a bit weird at the expense of finding the true killer. George's house was a complete mess (he was a hoarder) so for them it was just a matter of getting enough of it together to build a circumstantial case. Actually they could just as easily have made a case he was plotting to kill any of the other famous women he obsessed about. The gun residue evidence was suspect due to contamination and I believe other cases at the time were overturned for similar reasons. But I always think if Nigel and his by that time elderly parents, who were floored by this. It honestly couldn't have happened to a nicer family.

It’s worth remembering that Barry George, who was eventually arrested, convicted & jailed for life, was only acquitted & released due to “unreliable forensic evidence,” and that he chose not to give evidence at either his trial or retrial. Hence he has never explained where he was or what he was doing on that day. All these efforts to resurrect the “unsolved mystery» fall a bit flat when you consider that.

Excellent summary and analysis. I was living in London at the time. Jill Dando's murder in broad daylight on an otherwise normal week day, shocked everyone. She was very popular. The favoured theory at the time, was that Barry George had killed her. It appeared as the killer had targeted her and knew where she lived. This added to people's fear. As a wee side note for Dr Grande, Chiswick is pronounced Chizick 🙂

"Jill Blando" as she self-deprecatingly characterised herself. She was good at her job - don't misunderstand me. What I mean is this - there are some pretty, high-profile TV presenters you can imagine being stalked / killed. Newscasters described as _the thinking man's sex symbol_ as Selina Scott and others were often termed. Patronising and sexist, but if you lived here back then - you'd understand what I mean. Julie Burchill wrote, "The oddest thing has happened - who on earth would murder Jill Dando?" and I immediately knew what she meant. Trying to think of a U.S. equivalent and I can't. It was just so very odd and it remains so. I can only imagine there was a political motive - that someone discerned in Jill a sympathy with one of the warring factions in the former Yugoslavia. However - I cannot imagine Jill Dando being so unprofessional as to let anything "show". She was absolutely a _safe pair of hands._ This murder will probably remain a mystery but I still find it so very, very _odd._ (p.s. it's pronounced Chisick - the "w" is silent. - No "shade" intended!)

For those not living in the UK, we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the world. If it was B George, the crucial questions are: that starting pistol in the photo - was it convertible to become a practical murder weapon? If so, did he realistically have the knowledge and equipment expertise to do that? The UK police are very good at finding discarded murder weapons. Where is it? The bullet - where did he get a live round? How did he both know and have the tools to open and customise it? In total: there's a weapon, its conversion using specialist tools and knowledge (pre-internet) plus the bullet and its re-tooling. What happened to all that equipment? Where's the record of him buying it? Where's the trail of him getting books to gain the engineering know-how? Even a complete non-firearms person like me knows if you get it wrong, the weapon can blow up in your hand. No trace of powder or other residues in his flat, just that mirco-speck in his coat (which was rejected at re-trial!) I see him as the fall guy.

As a Brit, I cannot understate how huge and devastating this murder was at the time. She was extremely well known and well loved, she was shot on her own doorstep (almost appearing like an assassination) with a handgun in broad daylight (which was very rare in England) *PLUS* she was a longtime presenter of by far the most popular 'public appeal crime solving' program on English t.v. As a Brit, I always enjoy when you cover British cases - and admit to giggling when you get the pronunciations wrong. Chiswick is pronounced Chizzick - no idea why, it just is! 😉 This murder was a shock to the whole of Britain. At the time of her death she was working on Crimewatch TV and I would say that most people assumed it had something to do with that, initially. As far as I am aware, the nation was torn on the possibility of the murderer being that George guy. Some believed he was a scapegoat, so that the police could placate other Londoners who were in fear of another murder happening on their doorstep. I personally believe that the murderer knew who Jill was and that the murder was more personal than we are lead to believe. Someone was determined to kill her - I don't believe it was a chance killing. An absolutely abhorrent murder and I hope the perpetrator is found so that she can at least rest in peace.

It was just after they had been asked about the items that the program ended for that evening (to be continued of course) and the cast went home...I believe she was just returning from this program when it happened. "Jill Dando: A Sermon": There is a time to be liked and a time to be under examination. There is a time for fine hotels (I recommend the Hotel Oberai in Colombo, Sri Lanka) and a time for living room sofas. There is a time to be highly visible and a time to disappear. There is a time to boast and a time to be humbled. There is a time for success and a time for relaxation. Dando's life reveals all the ups and downs of fortune. This makes her life worthy of study, reflection, and commentary. As you can see, dear reader, here we are making a genuine connection with the audience. This is how we honor Jill's life. Jill hit many of the high points in life, but many of these high points were as evanescent as the carbonated water in bottles of Coca-Cola. There is a time to leave a home, close the door and have one's brains blown out. Or there is a time, like Andrew Finch, of opening the door, putting your hands up, and being blown away by a police sniper. This is neither good nor bad. It is simply how we live before the Resurrection. The time we spend moving about on the face of this planet means very little compared to our presence in eternity. All things are mere semblance when measured against this much higher standard. If I may quote Karl Barth, "Life moves on in its course with a vast uncertainty and we move with it, even though we do not see the great question mark placed over our lives. Jill was lost , even as she hoped for her salvation." (Letter to the Romans, page 43) God bless. Thanks for reading.

What strikes me from this case and many others is the disfunctionality of the legal system in both the United States, Britain and many other countries. Key evidence is excluded on obscure technicalities that have no relation to the guilt or innocence of the accused. Victims are forced to go through repeated trials. Inevitably some of them have died, are too sick to appear in court. Or their memories of the traumatic event have become hazy with times, as happens with all memories, but especially traumatic ones. Endless appeals are permitted, until finally the convicted individual finds the “right” judge who will let him off the hook. These repeated appeals are a sort of judge-shopping. Until the legal systems of the United States, Britain and other democratic countries are thoroughly overhauled to favor the victim rather than the perpetrator, violent crime will continue to increase exponentially, and life will become more and more unsafe for law -adiding citizens. I hope that you will address this issue in some future video.

This is one that literally sounds like an idea for a modern Agatha Christie book: The popular BBC host of “Crime Stoppers” is assassinated on her front doorstep. I think Doc’s thoughts are thoughtful as usual. Stalker makes sense.🤔 She’s unfortunately someone who might well attract some kooks simply through her fame. It’s unnerving because there’s no reason to think she did anything other than simply be successful in her work to “Encourage” this crime. 🤷‍♂️

This was and still is a bizarre crime that will probably never be solved unfortunately. This made headlines for many years...

They had to know who she was. Just going up to someone and shooting them point blank, no robbery or anything, it was a hit. 7 was my first instinct. An upset fan/stalker.

Fascinating! And your point is sooooo correct. "Not guilty" does not necessarily mean "innocent". Case in point.... One OJ Simpson. Allegedly.

I'd rather see the guilty go free, than the innocent be punished., which happens way more often.

Personally I don't think Barry George did it. He was a stupid fantasist with low intellect who spent his life pretending to be someone he wasn't. In the early 80's he made the news breifly for being a fake stuntman because he was obsessed with the likes of Lee Majors and Evel Knievel. He pretended to be the cousin of Freddie Mercury even changing his name to Bulsara. He also pretended to be an SAS soldier. He wanted his 15 minutes of fame by pretending to be a person that he thought would make him popular. Such fantasist's are just that, fantasist's. They don't have the gumption to be anything real - so they pretend. It's highly unlikely someone of Barry George's character would have the balls to actually carry out a murder. Barry George was not deranged, he was a fool and a simpleton. I've met a few Barry George's in my life and they are all gutless morons. Just like him.

@@scottricci5063 I have to disagree. That's the WHOLE thing about "NG" as opposed to "Innocent". Why a person can be found "NG" yet have actually committed the crime (i.e. not be innocent). The judicial system is set up to prevent your concern as much as possible. Granted, it's not perfect. But I guarantee you, guilty folks walk waaaay more than innocent folks go to jail. I was a Police Officer for 10 years. Seen the judicial outcomes of maaaaany an arresstee. I get your point about not wanting innocent folks punished though. I wholeheartedly concur!

In this case, the actually murder was correctly identified by the police and was proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt. He only “walked” because of the dydfunctionality of Britain’s legal system, which makes it impossible to incarcerate a criminal for any length of time. Countless other dangerous, violent individuals have been allowed to “walk” by Britain’s legal system, including terrorists,and have gone on to committ more violent crimes after their release. Amazing that the British and American people put up with this obscenity.
