He started on KZbin a long time ago and ended up making a special with his material titled “Words, Words, Words”. I think that was around like 2010, I first saw it on Netflix. Now it’s on KZbin for rent/purchase. Then he did “what.” a couple years later, “Make Happy” a couple years after that then went on a hiatus. In his 2021 Netflix special “Inside”, he filmed, edited and produced a special all on his own in his room. This took place over the course of a year. In “Inside”, he reflects heavily on mental health, social media, and the effects of quarantine. He also explains that he quit performing for about 5 years because his mental health was in a bad spot. In comparison to his other specials, it’s a lot more of a serious piece. He’s always stuck to being a musical comic and he really manages to create unique and beautiful content that can make you laugh and think at the same time. I hope this comment provides a bit of insight into Bo. Your reactions have been spot on and I highly encourage you to react to more Bo content. He'd been suffering from anxiety and severe panic attacks for years. During that "Make Happy" tour (where this song came from and was in fact the last song of the special), he'd had several really bad attacks before, during and after some performances, even breaking down in tears after a few of them. He knew he needed to take a serious break and get some help, which he did. He stopped performing live for five years. He didn't stay inside during that time though. He directed comedy specials for other comedians, worked on several projects including directing a feature film called "Eighth Grade" and continued to work. "Inside" was the product of a solid year's work in his guest house where he wrote all of the material, performed and recorded all of the music, edited all of the videos and did it all without an audience thanks to Covid. But yeah, the "I hope you're happy" line definitely was a commentary to the audience regarding his mental issues and their need to be entertained. He knew that and still was somehow blaming them (along with himself) for his issues. He did his best to perform for them but he also knew he had to make some much needed changes in his life in order to deal with them.

The ugly things about cosby(the person) aside, the show made us realize that we aren't so different. Same with family matters and malcom in the 90s(TGIF!!), for me it was a window into a world I didn't know, but I saw that it was, at the bottom, just like ME. Now for me, I have cousins are half black, and my uncle larry was a black dude from Mississippi and he was a role model - but a lot of people don't have that experience and they feel separate and weird about people different from them. What you do, on the deepest level, is let people know that we are ALL the same. One family. One Nation. And we need that more than anything right now brother. Thank you.

The Pringle’s can and burrito are actually metaphors as well, representing much deeper problems Bo was struggling with regarding life and his work

No, they aren't

Guy above me's actually right, Bo was asked in an interview what the burrito and Pringle can were meant to be a metaphor for, and Bo revealed they were just supposed to be funny so the audience wouldn't think the song would take the dark turn it took, and he wishes he had come up with a deeper meaning because of how well-received the song was to his fans

@@ryantalley5284 His stuff seems super deep because of his mental health struggles, but most of it is still just comedy. That's not to say he doesn't make jokes and metaphors about it. But it's usually not as deep as most people think lol

Yeah he took like a 6 year break from comedy after this special but he did write and direct a movie. Inside is his new special. It just came out this month and he made the whole thing in his office by himself.

Yessir. That was his last special before he went on hiatus. He was slowly declining over time leading up to this, leading up to him taking 5 years off before he started planning Inside. But then COVID hit and he had to do it all himself. So he kind of backslid. The man is a real one, honestly.

Just started watching Bo Burnham reaction videos today and as great as people do, you almost have to watch his stuff in order to fully (well as much as Bo let’s us know) GET what he’s saying and feeling in his songs. Even then, we really truly don’t even know the half of it, but it seems like as time goes on, and “what he does or doesn’t do next” help make his lyrics become transparent. I’m not a Bo stalker, I just like listening to his songs and find them pretty relatable. And yes, this is the last show he references in “all eyes on me”.

Watch his first special "what." Also a deep and thoughtful ending. Up until "Inside" was released, "Make Happy" was my favorite special. IIRC the burrito acts as a metaphor for his life. Had he known how overwhelming and fast the responsibilities of fans would be he wouldn't have pursued it the way he did. Bo Burnham is the tortilla.

Like many, I found you looking for authenticate Bo reactions, but I've found so much more than that. I appreciate you because you don't just laugh because everyone is laughing. Bo is a fucking genius and the fact that he was in the middle of a legit panic attack during the recording of this is absolutely insane. Also I was at the LOP show in Tampa and Ye didn't like the way the crowd was reacting to the beginning of the joint with Riri and did it 4 times before he was happy with it. Then he went off on Cudi and Jay for over an hour it was insane.
@BigmanDogs3 жыл бұрын
Maybe Im reading into it but I feel like the whole bursting burrito thing is a metaphor for him being overwhelmed with his life as a celebtrity. "You can tell them anything if you make it funny make rhyme. And if they still dont understand you then run it one more time."
@ryantalley52843 жыл бұрын
During an interview with Bo the interviewer asked what the whole "burrito, Pringle can" thing was supposed to be an analogy for and Bo said it was just supposed to be funny so the audience wouldn't expect the song to take the emotional turn it took, and he wishes he had given them a deeper meaning because of how much his fans love the song
@uno-theofficialcardgamebyMatel3 жыл бұрын
I love this whole song, it's so intricate and beautiful, he uses the Kanye rant to open it up and then uses things like not fitting his hand into a Pringle can and him putting too much stuff in a burrito and it overflowing to show how he can't fit in and he has all of these things that are piling up and its just overflowing to the point where he can't do it anymore. He gives things like wanting to have a daughter and having the "burrito man" warn him that it would overflow as how he wishes that someone or something would be there to take his problems away and make everything work again. This whole song has so many different small secrets where he's trying to say he needs help without saying he needs help, all he wants is to be that 16 year old in his room writing goofy songs again and not have to deal with all the stress, threats, pain, and depression. And the best part is when he says "if you have no more chicken I'll tike pork, but I'll blow my dad before I eat a burrito with a fork" where he's saying he'd take some small changes and not worry, but he doesn't want to give in and do something that's not normal to him, the whole song is about his panick attacks on stage and his mental health rapidly declining and people just sit and laugh because like he said, it's just a "silly show" to them, but this is everything to Bo and it's awful because his whole world is starting to cave in and he doesn't know what to do or how to stop it. He even says "my biggest problem is you" referring to us, we came to laugh at this little kid trying to make you happy while he himself is depressed and all he wants to do is be himself and not have to change to make others like him. This was his last ever special from his old career, his new show "Inside." is so much different from how OG Burnham was but its also a truly beautiful and brilliant show that shows how his brain has taken this whole pandemic and how he's started feeling better enough to actually start performing comedy. I hope we see more from Bo this year and for many more years to come, he truly is one of the greatest comedians and musicians to ever live and he deserves to be happy and have control over his life.

I'm glad to see even one reactor who actually knew something about Kanye and got the whole idea behind "Kanye-rant". I mean, most reactors just get the first part about the t-shirts without understanding that the WHOLE show is Kanye-ish rant, referring to his irrelevant, small problems as major ones, just like Kanye did, and all that lighting & autotune stuff, too - it was intentional. You also understood the mental health part referred to Kanye, too. The whole point of this rant is not to laugh at Kanye or at Bo, but to make people understand how the pressure performers create for themselves can sometimes be to much. The literally can't handle it.
@siriusblack99992 жыл бұрын
something that seems to be less well known about this song is that, although it was written with the intent to reflect on his experience performing live comedy on stage, he apparently started receiving messages from lots of people about how relatable the song was to them, and these messages weren't from performers and actors, but school children, and not because they're struggling with performing on a stage, but because social media has turned everyone's day-to-day life into a stage show, or at least that's how it can feel for a lot of people. and that's supposedly also what sparked his next big project, the movie eigthth grade.

Really impressive that he can as the reviewer mentioned broadcast his anguish in real time and transform it into something of truth and beauty. True Artist. Also I am feeling residually guilty only learning he was going through this now after having watched him perform "all eyes on me"

So, to me, this is not just a "black guy reacts" video, although I love hearing that perspective on music and entertainment that isn't stereotypically in a black man's everyday playlist. I love how Broadband does an emotional analysis of what the artist's going through and empathizes with who they are and anybody they might be singing about. It's interesting too how he finds out when things were released and how content might relate to the struggles of the performer at the time. I laughed about the Pringles can before, and Kanye's shirts, and my own issues with messy burritos (at what point is it a salad?!), but I didn't follow Kanye's tour at the time it was happening and this shed some light on additional things he was dealing with. Fascinating stuff. Thank you.
