That's cool, but ultimately unnecessary considering we're getting both a remake and a sequel to System Shock soon. I personally don't see a reason for this game to exist beyond Arkane paying tribute to a game they liked, which is nice, but I just would've preferred something more original.
@SamsButterscotch7 жыл бұрын
Seeing as how this is the first true SS spiritual successor, I'd say it was pretty original. Even if it were the case, and the game wasn't original, I'd far rather play more games similar to System Shock than most triple A games shoveled out nowadays, to be honest. I enjoyed it far more than any of Arkane's previous games (even Arx Fatalis), and it's weird as I had almost zero expectations going into it, except for Chris Avellone's writing, which did not disappoint.

Prey (2017) is System Shock 3. I'm all for more games to be made in this vein, but this is easily the best title of this year. So, that's a reason for the game to exist. I'd be very surprised if subsequent efforts to reboot/remake the SS will be as good as Prey.

Lmao clearly someone never played either System Shock 2 nor Prey 2017. Bioshock is only a “spiritual successor to System Shock 2” in the marketing that had that sentence to help sell the game. 2017 Prey is great. It hits on head why scifi is great. It takes its characters seriously and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. A good media produces multiple interpretations. I can't say my and Noah's match quite. But I can also see his reason. That's why it is great - multiple right ways, that tell us as much about ourselves, as the media's authors or the fictional world.

Thanks for another thoughtful and interesting video. I've sunk over 75 hours into Prey 2017 and adored it for many of the reasons you mentioned. I felt it was by far the most detailed, evocative and believable environment I'd ever experienced in a game of this type (any other than a full RPG, basically). As you touched upon, the human stories and the rich details about their day-to-day lives worked superbly to create a truly believable, relatable place. I found it genuinely touching and moving to read and hear about D&D games and blossoming romances whilst walking amongst the subsequent carnage and corpses. And, luckily, I also greatly enjoyed the combat and 'grind'. I played on Nightmare difficulty and thus found myself constantly low on materials, making it a survival sim on top of everything else. And in combat I was delighted to find I had to very regularly combine multiple weapons and tactics in a single fire-fight. It was truly exciting, and unique to need to, for the majority of my playthrough, combine eg. Gloo with bullets with multiple Neuromod powers in order to survive. It resulted in periods of frantic, break-neck pace interspersed with longer, calmer periods of exploration, resource gathering (I all but stripped Talos-1 bare), crafting and of course reading, discovering and pondering. A great experience from a wonderful game, which I enjoyed far more than Bioshock 1, 2 and Infinite. (I've still somehow not played System Shock 1 or 2, and now think I really must do so.)

I saw the video made by the other YTer, Errant Signal, where he discusses the open-ended shooters like System Shock 2, Thief, Deus Ex, etc and naturally Prey 2017 came up. One thing he mentioned that the line you could draw between its heritage with System Shock and Bioshock was its name: "System Shock" being about computer systems, "Bioshock" being about altered biology and ecosystems, and "Prey" being about psychic abilities and altered psychology. A "psychoshock". ...and "Psychoshock" would have been x10 a cooler name then "Prey".
@TheAdarkerglow5 жыл бұрын
I'd say "But naming it the same as another game increases publicity to an extent', but I think 'Psychoshock' probably would've drawn comparison to Bioshock and Systemshock (if you're making them all one word, make them ALL one world) in the same way, possibly more so. But is it a truly proper successor to those games? What's the qualifier on that? Development team, studio, trademarks, structure, narrative, mechanics? Just curious, not trying to aggressively debate it, being that I think the outcome is that it'd be subjective (as art).

I liked the faster paced ending. With the station overrun with Typhon minions and entangled by coral, with the terrifying Apex Typhon ready to consume Talos 1 at any moment, with dozens of lives hanging in the balance (I used the nullwave), I found it incredibly exhilarating to dash through the station with which I'd become so familiar. It really felt like all that exploration had paid off and I was able to careen through the hallways, ducking here and there behind this or that to avoid lasers and all sorts of Typhon projectiles. I had completed all the side-quests by this point (Except the treasure map, 25% of the drop points, and finding out about Mikhaila's dad) so I think this complete focus on the final catastrophe was made mush easier. The even scarcer ammo and the high number of enemies also made the mad rush totally invigorating, as some fights seemed simply unwinnable. On an unrelated side-note: The EVA sequences were awesome. Whenever I watch real shuttle EVAs or see it in movies, I'm almost never struck by the endless frigid void that could so easily swallow you up should you lose power or make a mistake. This game did it and then some.

So many people bash Prey 2017 simply because they wanted Prey 2 or because they are so used to the way FPS games are now that they don't want to give the game any time or attention. I found the latter out when a youtuber I used to watch, was playing Prey while talking about games on a podcast. You simply cannot play Prey while doing something else. Terrific video as usual. I doubt you're lacking in ideas for videos to do, but if you are I think maybe the Metro games or the Max Payne games would be some interesting topics for you to cover. I think they're both interesting takes on first and third person shooters respectively and think they're good examples of the imaginative/original use of game play, genre, and story that you usually cover.

Dicks Guy I'm mixed on the not editing out flubs thing. I'm one hand, Joseph Anderson, another KZbin critic that I follow, pointed out in a comment on one of Noah's videos the fact that patreon subscribers pay for quality content, and he should edit the flubs out of respect for the people paying money for this content. Remember this is coming from Joseph Anderson, who I at least consider the current king of long-form video game critique; a guy who is into his 30s and has more experience to speak on than I certainly have any to go on myself... And I kind of agree... Rather, I would with any other content creator, but this guy seems to deliver this as part of the package, and I can appreciate that in lieu of a more intimate and "down to earth" feel. Overall I say keep them in, it adds to it.

Thank you for doing this. I really enjoy your style, pace and thoughtfulness. I've been very divided on Prey '17. It's difficult for me to truly make up my mind about how I feel about the game. But in a way that division is interesting in itself. There is a lot to think about. A lot to process. You have an astute awareness of things I never paid any attention to.

I hope Human Head recovered in some way after the Zenimax cancellation of prey 2. I really love the guys, Rune and the first Prey are two of my favorite games of all time, and prey 2 was looking so much more exciting than the Arkane developed Prey.

They are a tiny company now, they can produce smaller titles or assist other studios, but they don't have the manpower to produce a game on the scale of Prey any longer, unless they handle the direction and the preproduction and get assisted by 2-3 other studios to actually produce it. But where would you find a publisher willing to do such a thing? Letting external company lead a production while publisher-owned studios do the leg work would lead to a lot of resentment, which is one of the many reasons why studios are so eager to be bought by major publishers. Also let's dice up some independent studios they might want to work with, Certain Affinity maybe.

I remember the intro to OG Prey giving me legit nightmares back in the day. seeing innocent people getting butchered by disgusting and terrifying alien stuff while you couldn't do shit about, all the while hearing their screams and cries for help.

I like both prey games. And have very fond memories of the original. Of course the reason I have a hard time stomaching the new one is because it's a completely different game. Not a sequel, not a reboot. A different game which if it had had a different name I would have been able to play it.

I loved so much from the intial Prey game and the rumours and teaser trailer for the sequel, which was unfortunately shelved, had me wanting more. Prey was so dramatic, especially the horrible death of Old Man Enisi. The pacing between events was good too. Although slightly faster than Half Life 2 did. The idea of having an additional layer on top of the world, namely the spirit world layer, is very incredible. Puzzles on 2 levels.

Almost think I wanted the Prey 201x where you were a bounty hunter in a sci-fi neo-punk setting. But I'm glad it turned out to be a psych-horroresque D&D every weapon is a utility item kind of game.

I would have liked to see Prey 2 also, but it isn't this game's fault that it was cancelled. This game was only given the name "Prey" after Prey 2 was killed in a completely separate decision. This game is good on its own terms. Call it Neuroshock, and mourn Prey 2 as a separate issue.

2:44 My favourite bit of weirdness that arises from the opening sequence of Prey is the fact that the Jukebox is fully interactable. You can cycle through quite a few songs before you trigger the Aliens’. However, when the Aliens arrive the Jukebox glitches and starts playing a song that was not available while you were wasting time at the bar. The only reasonable conclusion is that the Aliens hacked the jukebox to play ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’ just so they could have a wicked cool soundtrack for their abduction.

I avoided buying this game for a bit because I was suspicious that it was almost custom made exactly for me and I would miss out on dozens of other games. I was right, I adore this game. I was proud of everything I accomplished, and am majorly curious about everything I missed. I killed Dr. Igwe like an idiot, and I felt like I deserved it. Slammed the password into his container leaving him to die in space.

Great video, your analysis made me think more about my ending of the game and reconsider the final choice at the end. Prey 2017 really feels like an unsung game of this year but it's sunken it's teeth into me more than some of the game's it tries to imitate.

I loved Prey 1 because it was really original in many aspects. American native protagonist was very welcome too! We do not get something that tries to be its own thing in "triple A" space much anymore.
@Moji55a Жыл бұрын
Funny how you mentioned this, even though Prey 2017 tries to be it's own thing with multiple homages to the predecessor such as System Shock 2. But, you only care about the face value of things and only seeing the "WOAH NATIVE AMERICAN GETS CAPTURED BY ALIENS COOL" which is only in surface value.

System Shock, Bio Shock, Deus Ex, Prey2017 these are all on my shortlist of all time favourite games. A few others are games such as Mass Effect 1-3, Soma, Xcom and Talos Principle (hah never thought of that, Talos Principle, Talos 1 space station)

Still no excuse why they couldn't have called Prey 2017 something else and also no excuse to erase the original from existance. The IP's purchase was the one and only chance to see Prey 2006 see digital distribution again since it was flat out removed from Steam, and Zenimax/Bethesda chose not to re-issue it like they did with Doom 3 and Quake 4 and decided to make the other game instead, with absolutely no promise of releasing the original at all for preservation sake. Atleast rename the original as something else like maybe Prey: Invasion Edition. The new Prey is good, yes, but it bears repeating; why couldn't we have both games?

EA sucks, but Zerglings still are cute. THIS if they wanted to make a new System Shock why didn't they just call it System Shock 3?
@CapitanApocalypse6 жыл бұрын
Because Bioshock ( and it was said in video) not complitly a successor to System Shock. It is way more linear. New Prey gives you the freedom how you want to play it.... But i see, you more like linear "pew pew pew" FPS with colorful explosions. It ok, anything to suit your very simple tastes. But, for God's sake, stop calling the game "stupid", only case you are not smart enough to understand and like it. And Prey 2 - it could have easily ended up a piece of shit, dont worship it like masterpiece.
