Perhaps the best - and most important - video you have made to date. One more thing for everyone to think about: what happens with those varied impact angles when your shot is at a quartering angle, or from an elevated shooting position shooting downward, or from that elevated position shooting downward at a quartering angle. Consider the bone impact angle when shooting downward at an animal facing directly away - or towards - you. The ribs curve dramatically towards the top and the broadhead impact angle on the ribs becomes extremely steep. That's why I spent so much time testing broadhead skip angle to determine how overall broadhead shape, edge-bevel type, and broadhead tip design affect a broadhead's skip angle. It's the most overlooked broadhead design factor.

It is possible that sometimes arrow deflection can be your friend? Instead of trying to bulldoze thru a bone, a broadhead designed to ricoche off a bone, even at an angle, may allow the arrow to continue moving forward and send the arrow thru the vitals, instead of coming to rest in a bone and going nowhere?
@edashby4399 Жыл бұрын
@@Kurtdog63 When the arrow redirects, for any reason, all control is lost. That redirection will. sometimes, work to the bowhunter's advantage, assuming his shot was misdirected to start with. Redirection is random, and a random outcome is what we all strive to prevent. We want the outcome to be predictable as often as possible.

Thank you for all of your research and contributions to bow hunting, Dr. Ashby.
@Kurtdog63 Жыл бұрын
@@edashby4399 Speaking of reducing randomness.... Something I mentioned to Troy was comparing a loud bow to a quieter bow. Is it better to have a quieter bow that an animal may, or may not react to, or a loud bow that almost guarantees them to react almost ever time, to anticipate on how to aim. When animals are really close, this becomes less critical of course, but when an animal is at the maximum effective distance of a particular arrow velocity, their ability to move substantially is amazing, taking the arrow impact out of the kill zone. My calculation is based on animal reaction time at 1/4 of a second. I call it the HBTG VALUE .. or Hit Before They Get... It is based on where the arrow is down range in 1/4 of a second. Arrow velocity in FPS divided by a factor of 12 gives the yardage. Examples are a longbow at 120 fps yields 10 yards. A recurve shooting 150 fps yields 12.5 yards. A compound at 240 yields 20 yards. A crossbow at 360 yields 30 yards. If an animal is passed these ranges for that particular arrow speed, a deer type animal's reflexes may take the arrow out of the kill zone. The last 2 bucks I shot did not react at all to the shot. Four out of the last 5 doe I shot reacted explosively.

I'm a mold maker. There's this proprietary steel from Uddeholm called Vancron 40. It's the most durable toughest steel I've ever worked. We use it on molds that have steel on steel sliding functions that are extremely high wear. I built a set of cavities out of 420 SS and we got 50k cycles out of it. Switched to Vancron 40 and got 1 million cycles. Also I'd recommend Elmax. I normally harden it at 60 RC. Also very durable.

This is a great video! You're 100% right about polishing the edge on your broadheads. If you leave your edge coarse but "sharp" the micro serrations will be more likely to deform and burr. This is why ultra high end cutlery and tools( think japanese woodworking chisels) uses steel that has a very fine grain structure. When you have a very tight grained steel it will be stronger but will also take a much finer( keener) edge. A keener edge is stronger because the micro serrations are closer together and provide support to each other and dont break when they contact hard material. A good example would be a finely polished hand plane blade used for hardwood wood working or the edge of a scalpel as connective tissue is very abrasive as well. So, if your edge is finely polished ( 4k grit and above) and you hit hair, sand, hide, bone etc. It will stay sharper on its way into the body cavity. This is true even with cheap steel...though quality abrasion resistant knife grade steel( aeb-l, 440c, 1075, 52100 etc ) will definitely fare even better.

I can tell you I wish I considered this more before this season. So far I have shot 5 deer with Rage 2” mechanicals. And I can tell you while I’ve killed all 5, 3 of those animals the arrow turned immediately upon impact and headed back towards the rear and came out the guts which made tracking difficult. The entry wounds were massive, which was honestly the only way I was able to track blood. The other two were straight pass throughs and short tracks. My conclusion is that unless you have a flatter angle and broadside shot, the rage broadheads are just a no go. I also recovered the broadheads and each time they were bent, dull, and unusable again. I’ve since switched to fixed blades and will see how the rest of my season goes. Overall, I wish more of this was a discussion and I am a firm believe that mechanicals are just introducing more points of failure and chances to not penetrate and pass through bone and hide. Great video!

Love the channel and content. The reason for the other broadhead tests is to be scientifically consistent when testing each broadhead against each other. Animals are very inconsistent from one to the other and where you hit the animal is even inconsistent from shot to shot. I agree that what you did and testing on animals is the best overall test, but when comparing broadhead to broadhead the only variable can be the head itself to see which is better.

@justaguy7997 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Just a bit more about my comment on FOC. As Troy commented about an arrow hitting anything that is not truly broadside, higher FOC helps the tail end of the arrow from becoming erratic as it enters an animal at any angle. Also to Troy’s credit is that a very sharp broadhead enters much easier which also helps in preventing the fletched end of the arrow from moving out of its original flight path. These things equal better penetration. Most animals are already in some type of motion and higher FOC is truly helpful. I don’t understand the folks who argue against FOC, not realizing the benefit. Truly baffling!

That's why I did a lot of testing with narrower-than-standard broadheads but NO testing with BHs wider than what was already available at the time. There were already many problems showing up with the available wide-cut broadheads in the testing, and the wider the heads tested the more the problems. No indicated potential advantages to going even wider. I eventually settled on a narrower-than-standard BH width for my own "serious hunting arrows".

It didn't dawn on me at the time, but after hearing you talk about blade strength it really got me thinking about what probably happened. Every arrow I've recovered that had the thin blades was completely chewed up from the just chest cavity and I never had one penetrate a shoulder blade. So, I made the decision to go with thick COC single bevels this year and up my FOC significantly (20%-25% depending on the arrow setup I decide on).

Every time I see some KZbin channel has a broadhead and/or arrow test and use ballistic gel, I just don't waste my time watching them. I tested ballistic gel with broadheads and arrows more than 15 years ago to see how it would work. I already suspected that it wouldn't work well as I already knew how it acts after using it for testing bullets. And I totally got the results I expected and those results told me that ballistic gel is totally useless for testing broadheads and arrows. A broadhead that does great in a ballistic gel "test" might be totally garbage on animals and a broadhead that might lose in this "test" might be amazing on animals. Ballistic gel is good for testing bullets, but how the bullets affects the gel and how the gel affects the bullets are EXTREMELY different from how the broadhead and arrow affects the gel and how the gel affects the broadhead and arrow. And anyone that has hunted and shot an animal with bow and arrow, and butchered that animal, will totally understand this the moment they handle ballistic gel. It acts and affects the arrow and broadhead so extremely different from what animal hair, skin, muscle, tendons, blood vessels, organs and blood do. A broadhead and arrow test in ballistic gel only tells you how well it does against ballistic gel and nothing else, and I doubt there are many that hunt ballistic gel. You might as well test bullets against steel plates to see how well the bullets will perform in animals as you will get exactly the same useless results as you do with testing arrows and broadheads against ballistic gel. If these KZbinrs are such experienced hunters as they claim to be, then they very well know how useless using ballistic gel for testing arrows and broadheads is, but still they do it. Again and again. And why? Most likely for clicks because it looks nice and maybe to sell the broadheads and some merch. They are doing nothing else than lying to their viewers when they claim this is a good test that will tell how well the broadheads and arrows will do on animals. And then some of them put a dried deer scapula in the ballistic gel to make it "even more like a real deer", so the test will be even more close to "reality". Nothing but lies and they are misleading very may hunters that don't understand how useless ballistic gel is for this. My advice is to totally stay away from any KZbin channel that uses ballistic gel to test broadheads and arrows. By doing that, they have proven that they can't be trusted about what they say at all.

I hunt pigs on public land and a private cattle ranch in Florida. Most are with the bow and exclusively with the bow on the cattle ranch, none corn fed, it might matter. I'm only in the 100 pigs range at this point, but one anecdotal thing that keeps recurring for me annually is when I get a pig to nervous step as I release or I aim poorly and hit a pig solidly in the guts, low guts specifically, I have without exception gotten a solid blood trail and a pig that doesn't go very far. The last one went 177 feet I measured it on an app. I still can't bring myself to aim for the guts, but when compared to my preferred quartering away broadhead ends up on the opposing leg/shoulder joint shot, I get much less blood often very little and the pigs go further. The only time pigs haven't gone further on the quartering away shot is when the arrow mechanically destroys the leg shoulder joint immobilizing the pig, but there is still less blood for trailing. Have you noticed this? My theory is that the generally constant intestinal distention of wild pigs on poor forage holds the wounds open and the intestines of pigs have a much higher vascular content than any other animal I've ever dissected. Have you noticed this?

Here in central Louisiana my son and i shoot a lot of pigs with bow and arrow. Im 75 and shoot arrows set up by my son with different broadheads. Lately we been paying more attention to getting the blades scary sharp. I like to spot and stalk public land. No shortage of targets. I like fixed blade and he likes expandables. I can still shoot my compound at 62 lbs , he’s at 70. Shot placement is definitely the key but a razor sharp broad head saves the day on a target that’s always moving.

If these necropsy videos don't convince you of the adult arrow philosophy, then you just cannot be convinced. Well done, RF.

Cool how as you mpve forward in the rib cage it get more rigid too. It seems to allow for better penetration up front

I think swacker broadheads would be a good choice head of what you're talking about. The bristles dull the blade before it gets all the way in a slacker only deploys the sharper blades after it gets inside past the rib cage, I haven't got to use my walkers yet but all the video and the research I've done shows that slackers are good about going through and then opening and the sharp blades cut all the bottle organs and come out

So, that seems to be a thing. However, TWICE on big feral hogs, I've had the depth of the shoulder meat (not shoulder blade) The meat is thick enough that the "cutter" blades started opening BEFORE it hit the ribs. Turned into Aquaman Trident and stopped like a brick. TWICE. So, yeah, if every single time the blades get behind the ribs and everything goes perfect or the meat on the impact side isn't more than about 1.5" thick. They yep. That's a lot of ifs.

Will Ironwill broadheads hold a better edge when hitting something like a wild hog?
@jonanna980 Жыл бұрын
Ironwills use A2 tool steel. It’s the same metal we use to stamp steel car parts. It’s very very durable. High quality broad heads for sure

must be sharp in the organs makes me kinda want to know how a swhacker would fair on pigs. the ones i shot before didnt really feel razor sharp but they have they "fresh blades in the cavity" claim. gonna be shooting fixed regardless but the design seems make the most sense of a mechanical to me.

If u don’t get a pass through on a swacker u have zero blood trail

He is right. I only draw 54 lbs and used a hybrid cut in contact. I put my shot perfectly broadside on. 235 lb 9 point and my arrow barely passed through arrow stuck in him. He fell over dead at 50-60 yards. Funny thing was the mechanical action took so much energy away I barely had complete pass through then when I gutted him the lack of cutting channel freaked me out. It was just about a 1/2" hole with little sliced wound channel. So I know for sure my brand new cut on contact hybrid mechanical was dull inside the body cavity. Very little blood trail. Only reason I recovered him in short distance was I passed through an artery above his heart. I'm going to a Magnus stinger and paper tuning with his kit this year!!!

Could you possibly do a test where you get a expensive broadhead and a cheap broadhead and get them around the same sharpness using the edge on up sharpness test (that’s just the first one that popped up on google for an example🤷♂️) then shoot them through the same thing (ex. Target) then retest them and show how each blade loses the sharpness over so many shots Random thing I just thought of and I don’t know if it would work or not🤷♂️

With all of the angles of ribs, meat and bone.... I'd say that's why the broad heads seem to kick towards the stomach instead of towards the vital organs.

Love this video. Great info. But one question comes to mind. Indians used various bread heads. Including basically sharpened rocks. Flint rock etc. and many others with great success. What am i missing

Flint works. Ride on a horse and shoot a buffalo at 5 feet. Etc.

My broadhead performance improved drastically when I learned that bows are supposed to be horizontal and throw 550 grain arrows at over 350 fps.

I wish I could come down to the test lab and hunt/ learn even more from you. I would be picking your brain for all information that I could.
