Alright, I tried another Broadway Limited. Here's the experience.

Last year I purchased my first Broadway Limited locomotive, an NW2 switcher at a good sale price. I was very impressed by the detail and thought I might be adding a few more BL until I tried to run the thing. First problem was the DC operation, having to go to half throttle before it would move made it annoying but thought I might get used to it for the switching operations I like to run, however the noise was awful and like you discovered there was no easy way to adjust the volume. Then I tested the coupling/uncoupling with my Kadee equipped cars, that didn't work so well either on the uncoupling magnets. After weighing the hassle of removing the sound, replacing the couplers, and the throttle problem, I decided to return the unit. I understand that Broadway Limited has listened to the non DCC people and is going to produce models without DCC calling them "Stealth", but none of the shops seem to have any in stock. Haha, same. I heard about the stealth ones too but haven't really seen them. I theory they should be cheaper too... we shall see. Great to hear about your experience and that I'm not the only one with issues.

Hey I'll get a friend for the other one. Best excuse ever to buy more rolling stock. The Broadway ones look great but the running issues are not good.

Interesting concept, I only run DC and would like to try sound. This seems a great idea, but too susceptible to track which isn’t spotless. Have you considered a Kato soundbox, although they are expensive.

I find sound to be not so much worth it. It's cool in concept but it doesn't sound very good to me in real life, so it's not worth the extra cost to improve the experience.
