Post Boxes where first introduced in 1850s during Victoria’s reign. Initially they had no Royal Cipher but the Post Office decided on marking their post boxes with the cipher of the reigning monarch and so all post office boxes from that point onwards had a Riyal Cipher on them. Those that predated this and had no Royal Cipher are known as Anonymous post boxes. I am not sure how many still exist but there weren’t that many originally as the post office introduced the Royal Cipher pretty early on
@MagentaOtterTravels2 жыл бұрын
What a lovely name for that post box... Anonymous! Thanks for the information. I hadn't seen one before, but now I'll keep an eye out. And I will know what to call it! (BTW, do I know your name? I'm trying to learn longtime subs names when I can ;-) ) Cheers! XX Dara

@@MagentaOtterTravels lol, the Royal Cipher is the VR, GR, ER etc marking on the post box itself, those without the royal cipher are “Anonymous” Haha, yeah I think I have told you my name before but I wouldn’t blame you for not remembering, it’s not the easiest names to remember unless you’re Welsh, it’s Dafydd ap Hywel, Dafydd is Welsh for David. Wonderful, wonderful video. As you are filming some close up views of some fabulous private properties, do you ever encounter any frostiness from any of the owners who may object? Incidentally, although you pay to park on the main car park behind the high street, use of the loos is actually free.

Hi Dara. I'm sorry, I know I promised, and I did set a reminder, but I fell asleep. Another MOT member answered your question but a couple of additions. The 'Royal Cypher' was on the first boxes introduced in 1852 but was omitted in 1879 together with "Post Office', and this lasted for 13 years. In your video the second box was probably installed between 1879 and 1892 and the first one looks older so was, maybe, one of the first boxes installed. Also, the second box has a 'Tab' holder at the top of the door but the first doesn't, so, maybe, it has a preservation order. If I think of anything else " I'll be back". 🙂

I'm really enjoying your video tour of the Cotswolds, and this Broadway programme was no exception: superb filming, with great aerial footage, superb soundtrack...and a guest appearance from Ian. (Note to Ian: you need to make more guest appearances!) Well...we all now know where to go for afternoon tea 🧁 🍰🫖 ☕

It's a running joke in our home that whenever Richard Wells comments, he is going to say that Ian needs to have more time on camera! Did you like his avocado mask that he was wearing the church? haha Next week I'm taking a break from the Cotswolds to do a food video for fun... but after that we are back to the Cotswolds for Stow on the Wold! And you'll be chuffed to know that Ian has lots more time on camera... AND there's loads of aerial footage. I think Ian's drone photography of Stow is some of the best he has done! Cheers! XX Dara

More appearances!? I don't know how I feel about that, especially if, when we're there this summer, I'm not able to hide behind a mask.
