Les Mis has some of the most complex characters in musical theater, in my opinion of course. This song just reminds me to really think about Javert and why he does what he does, and this has to be one of the most beautiful renditions of this song that I have ever heard. Just wow.

this song with forever hold a special place in my heart. at the time when i saw les mis, the guy i was crushing on was playing javert (in the school edition, but actually they just said that it was the full musical) and he did such an amazing job and i saw it four times and man seeing him sing this and then seeing the end of the song made me breakdown in tears everytime

I agree. I've seen and heard many Les Miz productions and I just saw the national tour. They were all excellent technical singers, but none had the passion. I liked the Thenardier interpretation - Matt Crowle. It was fresh.

Javert is my favorite character in Les Mis in the year 2024. We have spent practically 60 years in the west preaching about MORE rights and MORE understanding and I think we are clearly in a time where MORE duty and MORE sacrifice in the name god almighty are needed (FYI I am not a christian and haven't been to church in two decades so that is not about my supposed christian fundamentalism because I'm not that guy). I totally understand that there is a time and place for unyielding conviction for law and for order and we live in a time of way too many (false) Val Jeans and way too much understanding so Javert is to me a beacon of law and righteousness in a time when the west lacks law and order. More Javerts are what are needed right now in our failed society.
