I learnt on one of these in the early 70's, it was made in 1867 and still played well. It also stood tuning to A440. I loved it and wish I still had it.

They are really nice piano and my wife is really excited about the history it carries. We really hope we can give it it’s voice back once the soundboard is cleaned up and all the new strings are strung. I’m making great progress on the action as you can see in the first video about it. Must be awesome to learn on a grand piano...

Wow, that sample at the end was absolutely wonderful! I'm really excited to see this piano get some love. I hear horror stories about many old pianos going to landfills because no one wants them. The rosewood veneer is just gorgeous. It's one of my favourite veneers (as an antique clock collector). I'd really love to hear more songs once it's all cleaned and restrung. I have no doubt it will look stunning.

Too many pianos end up in landfills... Will definitely ask my wife for more piano songs when restrung. In your experience as a clock collector, Do you have any information on a good place to find veneers for antique furniture/instrument? I’d like to find something that would be looking good in the missing sections.

@@HovingtonInstruments I guess I missed your comment (or forgot to reply). I was looking back to see if there were any more updates on the piano. When it comes to sourcing veneers for repairs, I do have a small stash of old veneer which has chipped off from previous repairs or from donor cases, but I largely tend to use new veneers and just colour match them and shellac them to blend them into the original finish. Rosewood is tricky because the older stuff like on your piano, I believe is Brazilian rosewood (or maybe another type) that is currently very difficult to find or endangered, so there are some other "substitute" species of rosewood currently on the market. I tend to prefer raw, flat sawn veneers off eBay, usually sold as "groups" all cut from the same board. This gives you the option to browse lots and get a stack with the figure, pattern, or colouring that you want. For something like this, you ideally want something with some level of black striping. If you prefer not to buy several dozen square feet at a time and only plan to get enough for this repair, then you could try a local lumber place or any local antiques restorers. They may be able to part with a small amount of veneer for next to nothing.

@@sooth15 thanks for all the great information, I did get Brazilian rosewood from one on my followers and has black streaks in it too. Will be a good match. Piano restoration is still ongoing. Will have more videos Coming at some point.

very nice project Tomy . I have salvaged a number of old upright piano's using parts of them in my instrument builds but all were beyond restoring . I hope you enjoy doing the restoration . that one is worth saving .

The restoration is a lot of fun ( so far anyway), but I keep getting dreams about that 150 years old soundboard cut in guitar and mando size....... My wife would terminate me.

I knew someone who restored pianos in my town, he moved away several years ago. He was also a master woodworker. Looking back, I wish I would have spent some time working with him. I'm sure I would have learned a lot. Looking forward to seeing this instrument brought back to its former glory. Thanks for sharing!

To my, I cannot wait for this series, I absolutely love this. I had the privilege of helping a local piano repair Man restore a piano around 25+yrs ago. I don’t know if you already know this but the hammers are individually weighted & You must take care to make sure they are properly done, Also wear a mask when getting rid of that very old dust it could be toxic too your lungs. Yes, the respirator is already out👍 Some of these steps Will definitely involve some help from our piano technician. I believe they are ment to be around 50grams but unsure on how to adjust this on this old action system..

Yea When I helped the tech on the repair I was contracted to do all the woodworking aspects, But I vaguely remember Him using little lead weights to adjust the hammer action?? Im not 100% though it was so long ago & I had sooooo much veneer work to repair & I also had to repair the soundboard that had cracked due too a broken leg & it fell. Anyway You are Very talented & I'm sure you will do a Great job. God Bless

A Beauty,! This piano spent its early life probably in a home heated by wood and before vacuum cleaners. It would be great if the bottom of the pull out light trays have the same veneer that you could scavenge for any repairs, and replace them with newer veneer as it would be in a location not seen.

Great idea but unfortunately those pull out trays are solid rosewood.. I’m also thinking it might be Brazilian for this point in time but haven’t confirmed yet. This could make matching even more difficult. But I’ll keep my eyes open now in case I see an area where I can get a veneer without being apparent. 👍
