Our famous Canadian, cowboy singer, Ian Tyson, dead today at 89. Thank you Ian for your music and your songs. 😢

Amen. I was taken by Ian's voice when he first hit the music scene way back in the early sixties. Also a gifted song writer. Paired with Silvia's angelic voice it was heaven to listen to. I just stumbled onto this video and it actually made me cry at 76. I do often long for those simpler times when the music was, well, beautiful.

I was in Danang, Vietnam (67-68) when one of my fellow marines left for the states. He had this collection of vinyl records that included the first three or four Ian and Sylvia records and he gave it all to me. God, I'd listen to those records over and over till I wore the vinyl out (well I scratched it all to hell anyway). I saw them down in Greenwich Village right after I got our and they were changing their sound...more of a nashville tone. This is a great version. Both of them had sweet voices. And Gordon showing up...ahhh Just wonderful, all three.

Thank you for sharing your heartfelt story. Viet Nam - all Americans should know this tragic story - I lost 2 high school friends for what ? I heard Gordon Lightfoot here in L.A. - 1973 - about to give birth to my daughter. The venue was small and very crowded. I could hardly fit by the tables. Hope life has turned out well for you. Sending hugs.

I first heard Ian and Sylvia at a college special concert in Minnesota around 1963 or 64. I immediately bought the LP of Ian and Sylvia with this song. They were my favorite folksingers for many years until they split up. I think their version was my favorite. They were both very young when I heard them the first time. She was about 21, he was about 34. I was sorry when they split up, and also when they moved on to more popular music. The folk music fad declined, and many folksingers moved on.

I still remember Ian & Sylvia singing this at the old Cellar Door, back in the late 60s, early 70s. I saw every performance of theirs there except tor the 18 months I was sent overseas. Now, particularly, I am so grateful that I could see them live, close-up, and hear the staggering, raw power that Ian Tyson cut loose with at live performances. I like their recordings, but the true power and stage presence just don't come through. Ian's ability to absolutely grab and hold an audience is something you seldom see in music. Elvis had it, and a few others. It's a true loss to music that Ian's voice is apparently now gone, but he can still write, and we have a number of his performances recorded. I only wish that more of their early live performances weren't recorded for us.

With all due respect, I don't care to clump them all together. In this video, it seems to hold true that Gorgon was always shy. I had heard this. (Yes, Ian & Sylvia did him a big favor here by singing his song). But, he still sings with his own band .. never left their side. Never ever sings solo. He is always with the same group. If it works, don't fix it, right ?
