As a White Sox fan, I think the announcement that they're not going to spend any additional money in free agency at all to try to win is a clear indication that they're looking to the Athletics strategy. They'll continue fielding a terrible team to suppress ticket sales to convince the other owners to allow relocation if the new stadium is not approved. Historically, the White Sox have one of the most sensitive fan-bases to record. We're historically blue-collar fans; we do not waste money going to see trash play. That will certainly be used against us. Reinsdorf threatened to move the team to St. Petersburg if the current stadium was not approved in the late 80's/early 90's and there have already been whispers/threats of moving to Nashville. You have got to love people railing against almost non-existent welfare fraud while billionaires extort billions from public funds to get new stadiums for their teams (though public funds for stadiums appear to be getting less and less popular, which is good).
@4149stonepony
@4149stonepony Ай бұрын
White Sox fans don't waste money to see trash play because they play in a boring ballpark. The marketing of the sox has always been just hate the cubs and we will be a little better, nowadays not so much. Sox fans deserve better, I am not a sox fan but look at how depressing that stadium is with a handful of fans. The team never took advantage of playing in bridgeport and did not build a better park than that dump they play in now. But again, Jerry Reinsdorf.

@@4149stonepony "I am not a Sox fan" says it all. There is nothing wrong with GRF but the name and the product on the field, and any new stadium will also not be "exciting," whatever that means, besides a novelty factor. OP's comment is 100% on point; this is all a scheme to leave the city for Nashville/wherever.
@wfelixluck
@wfelixluck Ай бұрын
To expand a bit, GRF is not at all a "dump," and this is part of the issue. I went there a few days ago, and nothing is crumbling or poorly-maintained. Despite their moribund record, the stadium was relatively full in the lower bowl, with folks/families enjoying themselves. I've been attending games at both teams' parks for ~40 years, and Wrigley, until the Ricketts/tax-incentive money hit, was clearly the dumpier of the two teams' offerings.

Jerry needs to get his priorities straight and sell this team. You still haven't paid off the taxpayers of Chicago should never fund... Let me repeat this never fund a sports team in your city or your state these people have the money to do whatever they want in their stadium do they give out free tickets choose a poor or to the middle class. The irony of all this is seeing the White Sox push for a new park when they are in danger of setting a single-season Major League record for most losses. The sales pitch is building a new playpen will get them more wins. The problem is no matter if you are in a new stadium or arena, that won't matter if the team isn't competitive and hasn't for a long time. Look at how much of an insurmountable mountain it was for the Arizona Coyotes to climb when they had so many years of losing seasons and a list of inept owners and then THE worst owner to lead to their final demise. The White Sox need to invest more money into any such plan to even have a fighting chance the public will support it. Period.

As a very discouraged and frankly depressed White Sox fan, I love the prospect of a new stadium. Finally something to be excited about! HOWEVER, as a citizen and a fan who is just done with Reinsdorf’s bullshit I have a hard time getting behind this. At minimum I think Jerry needs to match every dollar that the state/city of Chicago gives him. More realistically this probably needs to be a 30/70 or 40/60 public vs. private deal. And Pritzker wants to make sure this will be a net positive for Chicago neighborhoods by providing jobs and boosting local economies. Not to mention avoid saddling the state with debt from an unwise investment at the expense of the taxpayers. Reinsdorf has not showed that he will invest in his businesses like other owners in sports. He’s not renewing their TV deal with NBC, he’s slashing payroll, and now he’s asking for nearly $2 BILLION??? The ballpark they’re in now is still in great condition. It’s not the flashiest stadium in the trendiest neighborhood, but it does just fine. Ultimately I don’t think Reinsdorf will get his way. He’ll give Pritzker and Chicago the finger and take his ball(club) and go to Nashville or Portland

Explain how it benefits Chicago? The City doesn't own this team. The Fan's don't own the team like the Packers so why put up the money. Looks like it's bad investment for the community.

Chicago should be more worried about the Bears stadium. How about this time actually renovating right this time or build a new one instead of digging out the insides and leaving the facade so it's built like crap. Packers have been literally adding on to their stadium for.., I think 20 years now and seems to be improving and helping the community.

MLB needs a salary cap. I think that would help with a lot of problems. Wouldn't allow big market teams with big revenue advantage (what's driving problems in MLB) to stockpile and allow teams or give them a better shot to keep their talent. Or more of it, all teams.

The White Sox..... With their most recent loss they are 36-117 which ties them with the 1916 Philadelphia A's who finished their season with the same record (a tie is in there making the record 36-117-1) which is technically speaking, the worst record in MLB history IF we go by winning percentage...so congrats to the White Sox 🤪 Now....with 9 games left how worse can it get for them? Well, the '21 Orioles lost 117 games so that's likely going to be surpassed, then next up is the '03 Tigers whose 119 losses (and 43 wins) came rather close to the '62 Mets record of 120 losses. So the 2024 White Sox are already the worst team in their 100+ year history shattering the 1970 White Sox infamous record of 56-106....will they hit 120? 121? 122? I think they will. As for that field...it's good theatre for a proposal but this is being done by Chicago's unloved step-child, The Sox don't have the adoration within the grande masses that the Cubs have been reaping...and in 2024 they're sadly an afterthought in Chicago... A new stadium for this team will have to be a privately-financed endeavor otherwise they'll be leaving for Utah, Tennessee or perhaps even Oregon. The voters of Illinois will not buy it for them and they certainly don't deserve it despite that amazing 2005 team that ended an 88-year world series championship drought for the city of Chicago. If it becomes a choice it will be the Chicago Bears that will ultimately get their stadium built somewhere...perhaps the 78 site, or the suburb of Arlington, but not the White Sox. And another 100+ loss campaign in 2025 certainly won't endear the masses...it comes down to what have ya done for me lately? They've done nothing. The only way toward possible redemption would be selling that team to an owner who wants to build a multi-year contender and finance their own stadium. Good Luck with that dream. The Sox built it but as we can see in those photos, he didn't come.

You made a good point, as we can see the White Sox aren't playing there, so they can't lose there yet, hence their record is 0-0 at that location, which is way better than 36-117 as of 09/18/24, so I partially agree with you, it's the smartest thing that the White Sox have done...though I wouldn't say "ever done" as they were pretty darn smart in 2005.

They did try to pitch this horrible idea and the state still told the fool Reinsdorf no. I am so glad the days are upon us where giant subsidies for sports stadiums are a no go. These greedy owners want even more, it is not just a ballpark but an "entertainment district'. Sorry no one wants to get gouged at a cookie cutter entertainment district on the publics dime. If Jerry Reinsdorf and big time developer Related Midwest want to build it they can do it with their own money.

White Sox built a new stadium, how much did that cost? They built a ball park with no shade and a pitch to the stairs that give people vertigo. What's the hope that this will be built and regular people will be able to afford this scheme? Doesn't the city already have a billion in deficit? At the price of tickets and the fact they already built a new field whats the point of this.
