Brodie, in your timeline you forgot to mention the HOK sport study done in the late 90’s early 2000’s by the City of Oakland when Schott/Hoffman owned the A’s. That study had 5 or 6 possible sites 4 in Oakland. However, one of the owners wasn’t interested because supposedly he wanted to relocate the A’s to Santa Clara. Then Mayor Brown directed City staff to stop discussing it. Ultimately housing got constructed on the best ballpark site which at the time a surface parking lot behind the Fox Oakland Theater and a block away from a 19th Street BART station entrance.

I'm going to start by saying that I turned 7 years old early in the A's first season in Oakland and have been a fan ever since, even now some 40 years after leaving the Bay Area. I briefly worked in the clubhouse (until they told me I had to cut my hair), attended the 1972 World Series, was at the Oakland Airport when they returned as World Champions and was at work watching the 1989 World Series pre-game show when the earthquake hit. So it would be fair to say I've basically been a life-long Oakland A's fan. All that said, this is finally the more balanced look at this from you that I've been waiting to see. While I think the current A's ownership is terrible (just like that of my current local team the Colorado Rockies), the bottom line is that this has been a 20-30 process of Oakland dragging its feet and not taking any of this serious. Then when they finally do something to the stadium, it is to appease the Traitors rather than the A's who had stuck with them for all these years and totally screws up the stadium for baseball. In my book this is 90% the fault of Oakland. While not being local makes it so that it really doesn’t matter to me where the A’s are located, I sincerely hope that somehow things can work out to where they stay there. Oh and the other 10% of the fault (maybe more actually) goes to the Giants, for their unforgivable act of blocking San Jose. No real A's fan can ever root for the Giants if they do end up being the only remaining team in the Bay Area!!!

From a St. Louisan and Cardinals fan, your videos have provided fantastic coverage of this whole situation since the As announcement last week. Great stuff! Honestly, as poorly as the A’s have handled things, they probably would’ve stayed in Oakland had the city gotten their act together years ago instead of just recently. You can only keep delaying a business for so long before they pick up and move… and, at the end of the day, the team is a business that was getting the run around from Oakland (the government, not the fans) for years.

You’re right. It takes two to tango, but when the team showed excitement the city was very hesitant. Honestly, the team is just moving where the money is. Before the pandemic, the tech boom was strong and Oakland’s prospects were very lucrative. Afterwards, the cities that stayed open and continued life as usual came out more on top, and hence Cegas is more attractive. The city needed to move efficiently to get the ballpark done when the team wanted to work with them. That said, it still hurts the team and league are gaslighting the fans and city for the low turnout and unwillingness to work with them when it just isn’t true, especially when they seem to have made up their mind before the 2021 season with the trades of the popular players, the sharp increase in ticket prices, and the new interest in the Vegas market.

Once again, great insight, Brodie. I saw my first A's game in 1971 and then covered the team from 79-81. Not a lot has changed in the bowels of the Coliseum. When I covered them, the press box was arcane. The facilities were laughable. Even the press elevator was horrific. The so-called "mezzanine boxes" (at least those were upgraded) were an absolute joke. I'm telling you, I can walk into the Coliseum today, and sadly, despite a few cosmetic changes, it's still the place I went to in 1971. You are right on using the Angels and Dodgers ballparks as an example. The Angels park is nothing like it was in the 70s. Continual upgrades have made it a gem. If only the same had been done here, we probably wouldn't be in this place 😢.

The A's owners did similar to what the Rams owners did when they left LA for St. Louis: they killed off their fanbases as an excuse to move. MLB is to blame for all this by not allowing A’s to move to San Jose after Fremont failed. A Fremont ballpark would’ve been built had Wolff stayed patient and not backed out. I lived in Fremont for 10 years and have lived in San Jose for the last 13 years. Either city would’ve made A’s successful. There’s no reason for A’s to leave Bay Area. Fremont and San Jose were both excellent alternatives if Oakland just can’t get done.

A's arent going anywhere, Brodie. Vegas casinos do not want pro sports to be an all year round thing. It takes people away from the casinos, and they rather have those people spend money with them and not come back from the ballpark having spent all their money. Mare Island in Vallejo should have been the site of their ballpark anyway. The owner will likely sell the team back to MLB, who will put them on contraction. The A's would still exist, just not in MLB

Again. One big reason the A's are moving is due to the unsafe conditions in the surrounding neighborhoods. I was a season ticket holder for 27-years. Over that period of time, attending A's games became more and more dangerous for fans. Cars are broken into during virtually every homestand (((IN THE COLISEUM PARKING LOT)))!!! Assaults on Fans are almost common place. The Coliseum BART station has been the site of many robberies and assaults. I decided to stop my season-tickets after 2018. I went to an A's game. While waiting for the BART train to Concord after the game, about 50-young teens entered the BART station and started beating people up. I was with my wife and kids. We avoided the attacks, going to the far southern end of the platform. The attacks were unprovoked. The attacks are typical of what we see happening in Oakland today. Why didn't the A's build a stadium next to the Coliseum? The answer is. (((THE NEIGHBORHOOD SUCKS!!)). This isn't the only reason for the A's departure, however it is a reason that everyone is afraid to talk about. I know several former season ticket holders who stopped because of the neighborhood!! The A's are leaving because Oakland is dangerous! The low attendance, in part, is due to the lack of safety.

While cities, even minor league cities, will build a new ballpark to land one, none of the cities have any desire to maintain and sustain these ballparks. Teams will sign a long term lease, usually around 30 years for a new ballpark as the cities demand long term leases to pay off the mortgage. After 20 years much of the infrastructure requires significant maintenance when the HVAC, plumbing, and kitchen kit conks out. The cities are the landlord, their tenants expect the landlord to maintain and sustain their ballparks, as the teams do NOT own them. Unfortunately most cities have other priorities, why' should the taxpayers fork out the dough to fix up the team's ballpark. However, it is the city's property, not the teams... Real estate 101... Notice when the teams do own their ballparks, they are maintained and sustained better. Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium, even Sportsman Park. When Gussie Busch bought the Cards he also bought the Browns' Sportsman Park. Bill Veeck let it rot, but Gussie spruce it up to last another 15 years... For those who are fond of Fenway, Sportsman Park was built earlier than Fenway... I still recall Bob Gibson pitching for the Cards in the 1964 World Series vs the Yankees... My father recalls the Cards and the Browns streetcar series at the same ballpark, every game...

I still think $175M gap between what Oakland had secured and what the A's were willing to come up with to cover what was supposed to be Oakland's responsibility were the final straw. Do I think it fair? No, but I have to admit that attendance hasn't been close to MLB averages for more than 28 years. You can blame the penny pinching ownerships of Schott & Hoffman to Wolfe & Fisher to Fisher. John might be a nice person to know, and a loyal boss, but he punked almost every A's fan for the past 18 years with the way he runs this club. Last thought. Brodie, if you owned the Giants, & knew a big way you've been able to keep the team in the black is by all those tech companies in Santa Clara, San Jose & Silcon Valley. Would you have given the A's the South Bay back? I know it's cut throat business, but San Jose A's would've meant no more large purchases of suites, club seats, & advertising at third & King.

Oakland is a dying stagnant city and has been for a long, long time. The population is not much bigger in the city than when the coliseum was built. To put it in perspective Oakland was at 384K population in 1950, its now about 430k and declining. Yes there is a lot of people in the bay area overall, but very few have been attending A's games, since about 2006 the team has been near the bottom of MLB in attendance even with some good teams. The A's no doubt looked at this and the current trend of businesses and people fleeing the bay area and the state of California and realized they would be far better off moving to a city that is growing and with a far better economic outlook.

They Couldn't get deals done. Part of the blame is the city of Oakland. It's time to move on. Oakland mayor blames the A's for turning their backs on the city of Oakland, that's BS . They tried to get the deals done, but the city of Oakland isn't serious about keeping the A's. Raiders and Warriors. Now yr crying about losing yr teams. FACE FACTS. THE A'S ARE ON THE MOVE.

Can you explain why A’s couldn’t get a stadium built in Fremont? They are way better to deal with than Oakland. A’s have lousy owners who don’t know how to get anything done. That’s the truth

The bay bridge is the only reason why Oakland was known for. It connects to Frisco.

Here’s an idea. Move the A’s to Sacramento and leave the damm drums in Oakland , they both deserve one another.

So why and what happened to that 100 million that was spent on research or what ever it was that the A's spent ????

I love Oakland but that is a failed City. The city of Oakland begrudged its community so I'm not surprised that the A's are leaving.
