Krita needs Wayland support as well. They're working on it, bur right now if you use Krita in Wayland your cursors don't change when switching tools (or switch back) and of course Wayland doesn't have good colour management support, which is important for drawing/painting for print.

Krita sees no point in bothering with this until color calibration is possible. They need to port to Qt6 too, which is in progress, but will take quite a long time due to the sheer number of downstream patches Krita carries just to work cross-platform with reasonable performance. One of the biggest challenges is that Qt 6 dropped support for Angle, an alternative graphics API to OpenGL that works well on Windows. Windows' OpenGL driver support is awful, which results in awful performance. So they're going to need to backport the entire API to Qt6 or maintain a separate canvas for OpenGL (Linux), DirectX (Windows), and Metal (macOS). Which will result in significantly more work when it comes time to upgrade from Qt6, either way. Some may diminish the importance of Windows as a platform for Krita, but most users of Krita are on Windows or macOS, and the fact is that both of these platforms have reliable color management. Linux is holding Krita back right now, and that's sad.

@@jamnorWhy aren't they switching to Vulkan? I understand it's a huge change, but probably easier than creating 3 backends.
@jamnor3 күн бұрын
@@mgord9518 I'm not dumb enough to link to a webpage in a KZbin comment lest I be permanently shadowbanned, but look up "Krita, OpenGL and Qt" on the website named valdyas. That should give you context on where they were at 4 years ago. Bottom line, Krita actually runs on an abstraction of all the graphics APIs like Vulkan, DirectX, etc. ANGLE is the abstraction they were working on. But they need to make a decision whether to completely rewrite the code to depend on a new Qt renderer or backport the current one. It isn't clear which is the better decision from a maintenance perspective. Edit: Also, Vulkan only solves Windows and Linux, but macOS is trickier due to not having any support for Vulkan. I don't know how Qt works so I don't know if working with Vulkan directly is just hard or something. More detail in the article.

It's very exciting to see it continue moving forward. Hilariously, for some applications it was actually better than XWayland Wine since I'm running an nvidia card (I got it for an absolute steal, don't judge). But XWayland works a lot better under nvidia now, but definitely not without problems, so still hyped to see this move forward.

GUI security is definitely a good thing, but see if what it translates to is stifling local devices, and stifling functionality compared to what can really be done in a pure UX sense (looking at you Gnome). Be looking out for worsening DRM-type (Richard Stallman-type) problems as well. I hope this maintains a positive course to security becoming an enabling force for better user freedom and experience.

Firefox was installed, but it looked like he used Internet Explorer most of the time. The machine was/is a Siemens Fujitsu from 2002 and now part of my collection 🙂. So I suppose the only real worry now is native Linux programs not compiled for Wayland (which means every native and non-FOSS Linux game up until now I guess?) that still require XWayland to even boot. Given I have a bunch of (and almost exclusively only buy) those, I guess XWayland it is until the end of time indeed. Unless devs start waking up and fixing their shit (which they never do, but they should - that includes actually having the native port to begin with).

I’m probably going to see dreams about wayland today.

If wayland will be ready, i could finally switch from PCI passthrough Linux gaming to my gentoo wayland only setup. I don't use Xwayland, just wayland for my case is enough. Shame that Krita still depends on X, or LMMS. Inkscape is clunky to use (but i will try my best). For DAW there's Ardour.

What's wrong with using xwayland though

wayland everywhere... as consequence, i deleted X11 GNOME session. i still use it on XFCE4 but not GNOME.

Wayland is getting there. Its not there yet, even on AMD but it's getting there. I just wish the BS "it's not ready only on Nvidia" would die out though.

Every time i watch a video about Wayland i try it on my PC running Manjaro and yep i just get a black screen with a laggy cursor when choosing plazma(Wayland).

Note, almost nobody of the group who abandoned working on Xorg worked on wine's wayland support. Proving they only care about control, they don't care about the users and should all be banned from working on Wayland and causing further damage.

@@cameronbosch1213 Only ppl who have the users best interests in mind should be allowed to contribute to the repo that everyone pulls. The guys who abandoned Xorg and haven't reached feature parity with Xorg seem to fall into that camp.

I just thought of a way to fix the screen movement issue. I will include in all my applications and maybe include in the applications I use a Dbus api that will allow it to move on the screen.

wake me up (or better said, my dad) when wine can run autocad and solidworks. that is the only thing stopping my old man from switching to linux.

as far i know linux have its own alternative for cad( forgot the name) wich is not as complete as autoCad but its getting there.

@@TjMastery Please stop answering that to this sort of questions. Is not helping anyone. The answer to "wake me up when Airbus A320" is available on this country, is not "do you know you can pilot Boeings there?"

good vid :) "not because it's more buggy" - actually yes it is lol, wine in general broke some things not just bc wayland some wine stuff is better but everyone go test games in wine+wayland, especially old ones. jfc it's so busted also everyone should test wow64 in wine
@BrodieRobertson3 күн бұрын
It might be more buggy but it's not because it's suddenly more buggy, inherently having more users trying out more things will lead to more discovery
